Greetings!

After our grand opening back in November of 2013, we are excited to introduce The Element (New Element Training's weekly newsletter). Each week, articles featuring topics about preventative strength training, health, wellness or anything else relative that we think would be fun to share will be emailed to your inbox. It is a great way for you to get to know our facility in more details and be part of our growing culture. The staff at New Element Training hope you enjoy our weekly reads.

In this newsletter Andrei talks about why New Element Training is a unique gym concept and where it is originated.

Also Lisa will be explaining how New Element Training has helped so far Ryerson & George Brown Dragon Boat Club.

What is New Element Training?
Andrei Yakovenko

New Element Training, or NET for short, is a different kind of gym. In fact we are the first gym of its kind in North America. One of the main differences between our gym and others is that we are 100% focused on proper strength training and nothing else. Our goal is to provide the most effective, time efficient and safest exercise possible. When clients come to our gym, we want them to spend their time on what really matters - proper strength training, so they could feel/see the results of improved quality of life and health as fast as possible.

Now we know that proper strength training would give you so much more than a better looking body (not that there is anything wrong with having an attractive physique). It would improve your cardiovascular system, flexibility (depending on the exercises), get rid or alleviate your back pain, speed up rehabilitation, decrease chances of injury, improve insulin sensitivity/ cholesterol profile, mineral bone density, helps to alleviate symptoms of arthritis, slow down the forces of aging, and list goes on. There are academic peer-reviewed publications suggesting that strength training is medicine. Some doctors call it "the best preventive medicine in which a human being can engage". More and more evidence emerges suggesting that practising proper strength training should be our top priority for maintaining a resilient and healthy body.

Our facility focuses on what gives the most for your buck. By design, we do not have saunas, or offer other services that are less effective for the purpose of getting the most health benefits from an exercise in a shortest period of time possible. When Werner Kieser (founder of a Swiss based and very successful Kieser Training franchise; pioneer of strength training for health concept) introduced those amenities to his clients in one of his original gyms, he quickly learned that people who needed strength training the most were those who spent more time in the sauna and less time training. Therefore, he decided to create a facility where clients would be provided with the best atmosphere for effective strength training and nothing else. Today, there are over 300,000 members who benefit from this focused and results-oriented training. New Element Training is merely an adaptation of this highly effective concept to exercise.  We are very excited to be the first to introduce this pure and high quality gym concept to North American market.

Dragon Boat Club Noticing Results Through NET
Lisa Tai

Dragon boat is becoming a very popular sport in the Greater Toronto Area. There are over 100 teams in Toronto. What is dragon boat? Dragon boat has 22 individuals on a boat (10 paddlers on the left; 10 on the right; a drummer at the front, and a steersperson). This sport involves strength, muscular endurance, power and synchronization.

Here is Lisa (wearing purple) paddling at the Canadian National Dragon Boat Championships in Victoria, BC back in August 2013.

Members of the Ryerson and George Brown Dragon Boat Club have noticed an improvement in their strength and muscular endurance since training commenced in January of 2014 at New Element Training. As their Coach and Club Supervisor, I wanted to see their muscular strength increase since it is very beneficial for paddling.

The machines prescribed to this team focus on:

  • Muscle balance - paddling involves repetitive strokes on one side
  • Strength - paddling technique can only do so much; we need strength to give paddling strokes an extra oomph
  • Improving sport performance - mental focus is needed during a race; with these machines we are able to train until muscular failure
  • Flexibility - involves rotation of the hip and shoulders; we try to achieve full range of motion in order to grab extra inches of water

I've spoken to the paddlers. It has only been 2 months and they are very excited with their progress. Here are a couple of feedback comments the paddlers have mentioned:

  • Improving the repetitions of pull ups (increase of 5 pull ups!)
  • Pool practices are not as exhausting as they used to be
  • More core stability while performing Windshield Wipers
  • Noticed the back is not as sore as  it used to be

As a 5 year dragon boat paddling veteran, I have had years of paddling on my left side only which resulted to my severe muscle imbalance that I needed to fix fast. I have been using the F1 (Core Torso Rotation) and F3 (Core Lumbar Strength) machines since November. I have noticed that I don't slouch to my left as much anymore and my lower back is stronger. I am pleased with the results so far.

With only 2 months of training for these dragon boat paddlers, I am very excited to see their transformation and what's next to come.

Since I learned about all the benefits of what proper strength training has to offer, and the fact that all those benefits could be achieved in a fairly brief and infrequent workout, I was totally fascinated by it. I saw tremendous potential in offering people a training concept that has been shown by both scientific research and years of experience to be the most effective way to exercise. Who wouldn't want to train for only 30 minutes, 2 times per week or less and achieve all the benefits exercise has to offer, plus get rid of long lasting musculoskeletal pain, and improve their health? It is a no-brainer to me.

I wanted to thank you for putting your trust in us for helping you achieve your health and fitness goals. We hope you have noticed changes in your quality of life and of course, living with a stronger back.

Sincerely,

Andrei
