A Word from The Editor

The Employee Express has been a passion project for us that was designed to move from a broadcasting message to an engagement tool that would help us connect with CPP employees. We hope that The Employee Express has become a central hub for you to find out about HR-related events, employee news and updates, and celebratory spotlights of employees and teams on campus who are committed to advancing the vision and excellence of Cal Poly Pomona.

CPP EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Michelle Cardona

Michelle Cardona

Michelle is the Interim Associate Vice President, Financial Services/Controller in the Administrative Affairs Division and has been with CPP for 11 years. She is responsible for the planning, compliance, and direction of the University's financial operations. She also leads a team of over 70 staff members within Strategic Sourcing and Support Services, Student Accounting and Cashiering Services, and University Accounting Services. Thank you for all you do, Michelle!

What do you like most about your job?

"I'm definitely an Accountant at heart, and love the numbers and how they tell a story. But, working at Cal Poly Pomona for over 11 years and being an alumna (times 2!), the thing I like most is knowing I'm part of a team helping to further our students education and helping them to succeed."

What is a quick tip that you want the campus to know?

"Don't be afraid to ask the question or seek guidance. We should all consider ourselves life-long learners, and the knowledge you gain will only help you, or someone you know, in the future."

What do you like to do when you are not working?

"I love watching crime and medical dramas, like Law and Order and Chicago Med. I also have a long list of home projects that keep me busy, and have reignited my love for organizing and decorating. Most importantly, I try to give as much love and attention to my fur baby, Nixon, an 11 year old pug whenever I get the chance."

Use a strengths-based approach for more impactful feedback. Receiving and giving feedback does not always feel good, but strong teams rely on the clarity, accountability and vulnerable dialogue that feedback provides. We will discuss several types of feedback, the ‘BOOST’ model, and common pitfalls that make feedback challenging.
