Debbie Honjiyo
Coordinator DHH Services and Lead Realtime Captioner
| |
Liz Volz
Coordinator DHH Services and Lead Realtime Captioner
| |
In their nomination, it was said that, "these team leads have been at Cal Poly Pomona for over 28 years each and have been Lead Captioners & DHH (Deaf & Hard of Hearing) Coordinators for almost 6 years! They have made sure that 45 classes (on average/each semester) get covered with Realtime Captioning (RTC) services. That number of classes covered is equivalent to 120 classroom hours of captioning per week! Debbie and Liz also work in the classroom providing captioning (access) as well. If staff call in sick, they have managed to cover classes with only 15 hourly RTC’s. They consistently go above and beyond to assure access to DHH students and to maintain equity. Their level of commitment to their work is why our DHH students have a high graduation rate.
When the pandemic hit, Debbie and Liz found a way to provide this service remotely with new technology and ended up becoming popular among other CSU campuses helping them set up their technologies to transition to “virtual” learning modalities. It is because of their leadership that the DHH-RTC Services area had a smooth transition when the pandemic hit and students didn’t skip a beat with access.

|
It is amazing to see Debbie and Liz work and how their services are rendered, almost like top secret agents in class. I wanted to highlight their service & dedication to the DHH students and to Cal Poly Pomona because their commitment to this service never gets recognized. Thank you for being a fantastic team and for your commitment to providing this important service for DHH students, staff, & faculty at CPP!"
Thank you, Debbie and Liz, for your 28 years of service and all you do for Cal Poly Pomona!
