EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Joseph Hackbarth Headshot

Joseph Hackbarth

Director of Student Systems and Operations

In his role in Enrollment Management & Services, Joe provides project leadership over various EM&S initiated PeopleSoft (BroncoDirect) improvements, 3rd party system integrations, and other projects involving the offices of Admissions, Registrar, and Financial Aid & Scholarships. He also collaborates closely with the Division of Information Technology and other campus partners on student data needs, technology implementation, acquisitions of new products, and ongoing tech support.

In his nomination, it was said that: "Joe is an exceptional campus partner. His impact and partnership extends well beyond his colleagues in Enrollment Management because he regularly collaborates with [various campus partners]. Joe is innovative, collaborative, and so knowledgeable – he's also a lot of fun to work with!"

Thank you, Joe, for your 3 years of service and all you do for Cal Poly Pomona!

What do you like most about your job?

"It is never a dull day or lack of action! My job is about taking grand campus strategic initiatives (such as GI2025, AD-T automation, or advisor caseload rollout) from concept to actual technical implementation. I love being able to implement new data and technology solutions that improve our operational efficiencies and ultimately see the effect it has on supporting our students. Whether I am just coordinating a project or personally diving deep into the computer programming, it is my goal to utilize all the tools and systems to their maximum potential and benefit."

What do you like to do when you are not working?

"I enjoy spending time with my family and planning vacation adventures. It has been too long since COVID. I love traveling and cruising the world’s destinations especially in Europe and Asia. My favorite destinations thus far have been the UK, Taiwan, and Thailand. I hope to visit them again soon. There is also a chance when I’m working remote and Zooming outside you may catch a glimpse of one of my six pet chickens in the background!"

What is a quick tip that you want the campus to know?

There is seemingly no limit to the number of databases, data custodians, and overlapping systems available for the campus--it can be overwhelming. Dashboards via Tableau are great for aggregate data, Student Success analysis, and for the most common data requests. PeopleSoft reports and queries are a great source for near-real time operational/transactional type data. When requesting data have in mind the type of data elements you need and it's purpose as this will help connect you to the system and team that can best service your data needs.

This is a 2-hour session that focuses on the human reaction to change. When we recognize that change follows a certain pattern, we can learn to manage our reactions and understand how to navigate change. This allows us to intentionally determine how to best move forward, even in the most challenging stages.
