EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Val Otto

Administrative Analyst/Specialist

In her role as the Administrative Analyst/Specialist, Val supports the Academic Senate by planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting all administrative responsibilities of the Academic Senate Office. She provides continuity in all operations of the Academic Senate Office in the face of changing Senate leadership on an annual basis.

In her nomination, it was said that, “Val exemplifies expert-level knowledge of university governance, leadership, academic and faculty policies and procedures. The Senate Analyst position is a complex role, but Val genuinely thrives and continues to excel year after year. All members of the Academic Senate past and present, thank Val Otto for her tireless service and strong dedication to the betterment of University governance."

Thank you, Val, for your 9 years of service and all you do for Cal Poly Pomona!

What do you like most about your job?

"I enjoy working with the faculty involved in the Academic Senate. I also enjoy doing the research requested of me, digging into the archives looking at old policies and the updates that have been made to them."

What is a quick tip that you want the campus to know?

"The Academic Senate is the body that provides joint decision-making and consultation between administration and faculty. Any time someone refers to an academic policy, the Academic Senate was involved with vetting that policy and in some small way I contributed to that."

What do you like to do when you are not working?

"I have various interests when not working - I like to walk the dog, hike, and sometimes do nothing but binge-watch a show. I am always trying to learn new things, currently, I am trying to learn to crotchet, which is easier said than done."

Is there an employee who you believe goes above and beyond for Cal Poly Pomona?

Faculty & Staff Summer Conference

May 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of Older Americans Month. This diversity month celebrates Americans over age 65 and acknowledges their contributions to society. Fun fact, according to the Administration for Community Living, in 2020, 10.6 million (19.4%) of Americans age 65, and older were in the labor force (working or actively seeking work). Please visit the U.S. Census Bureau to learn more about key statistics relating to older Americans.

Join us this summer as the Office of Academic Innovation hosts a summer conference welcoming faculty and staff from both Cal Poly Pomona and all interested faculty and staff from Southern California. This conference will consist of three tracks on Pathways to the Future: Exploring the Intersection of Learning, Work, and Community. The Office of Academic Innovation and the NSF INVEST grant will cover the registration costs for all Cal Poly Pomona faculty and staff with promo code “CPP2023”.
