Coping with Reactions to Difficult World News

On Tuesday, 5/24/22, we learned of an incident of mass violence in Texas at an elementary school, which resulted in the loss of at least 21 people including elementary school children. It is normal to feel a range of emotions and there is no one right way to feel or respond to a tragedy (collective trauma) such as this.

CPP EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Juan Carlos Torres

Juan Carlos Torres

Juan Carlos is a Custodian in Facilities, Planning and Management and has been with CPP for four years. He is responsible for cleaning Building 121 West, both the first and second floor. There is a lot that goes into maintaining the cleanliness of this building including taking out the trash, wiping the dust, and taking special care to make sure the bathrooms are disinfected and cleaned for the employees and visitors. Juan Carlos goes above and beyond to make sure the building looks superb because Cal Poly Pomona is a quality institution, and he feels that our buildings should reflect that. Thank you for all you do, Juan Carlos!

What do you like most about your job?

"I love talking to the people in the building. Everyone is so kind to me and they go out of their way to say hello. I love having conversations with them and I'm always touched by the fact that they recognize me and my work. These interactions motivate me to go above and beyond and keep their space clean."

What is a quick tip that you want the campus to know?

"It's important to recognize employees for their hard work. Sometimes, it can be something as small as telling someone 'you did a great job today'.

When you notice how hard we are working and you share your appreciation, it can go a long way and motivate us to continue to be better."

What do you like to do when you are not working?

"My favorite thing to do when I'm not working is watch soccer. My favorite team is América and my favorite player is Christian Ronaldo.

Thank you so much for recognizing me in this newsletter - it's the first time I've ever received something like this and it means so much to me that someone noticed the contribution I make to this university."
