As Black History Month continues, we have compiled some Black-Owned Business stats & facts!


  • There were 145,000 Black-owned businesses in Canada as of 2020.


  • 64.5% of Black-owned businesses in Canada were owned by Immigrants


  • 69.5% of Black-owned businesses were sole-proprietors or self-employed


  • 71.9% of Black business owners were between 25-54 years old

Are you an Early Childhood Educator? We need YOUR help in identifying sector-specific challenges ECEs face in Hamilton. Workforce Planning Hamilton in collaboration with the McMaster Research Shop are looking for focus group/interview participants.

 

With the shortage of 8,500 ECEs anticipated by 2026 in Ontario, ECEs are crucial to a healthy education sector.

Hamilton’s economy in 2023 has shown a resilient labour market in a post-pandemic world. This series will elaborate on the labour force characteristics of Hamilton’s population; with a deep dive into Hamilton’s youth labour force and immigrant labour force. The report also explores Hamilton’s industrial changes, job posting trends and wage data.

YWCA New Programs

YWCA is excited to share that they are starting some new skilled trades programs at no cost in spring/summer of this year. Anyone identifying as Female, non-binary and 18+ can apply to any of these programs. The only exceptions are the Construction Craft Worker and Heavy Equipment Operator Programs which are open to all genders, but priority will be given to women, gender-diverse people, and persons who self‑identify with disabilities and/or mental health barriers.


YWCA Hamilton is currently pending official start dates for any of the below Training Programs to commence in spring/summer this year. Interested folks can fill out the online form, and choose one or more programs mentioned below, to be placed on a contact list for when recruitment efforts start!

Food Handler Certification Exam

HWDSB Continuing Education is pleased to offer Food Handler Certification exams at Hill Park Learning Centre. Please see the attached flyer for specifics on how to book your exam.

 

  • Looking for employment in the food service industry? Need a Food Handler Certificate? This Ministry of Health-approved certification exam is offered in English only and provides 5 years of certification. Self-study is required.

 

All participants must pre-book and make electronic payment prior to scheduled exam.

The YWCA Hamilton Uplift in collaboration with Humber College is hosting a Tech job fair and we are looking for employers who want to attend. I have attached a flyer that provides the details.

Booths/tables are free, date it March 1st from 10am – 1pm.

This is a targeted job fair where attendees are from our Uplift programs in data science, data analytics and Humber’s IT bridging program for newcomers.

Leveraging the quiet power of introverts in the workplace


Introverts possess a quiet power. If you listen carefully, you may notice it. Yet, many workplaces favour more extroverted individuals. Take two candidates who possess the same degree of knowledge, skills and qualifications. The candidate possessing a higher degree of “executive presence” will likely get promoted more readily, and not just for leadership roles.

Canada can’t afford to be complacent about skills training 


As we move past the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a tension between the desire to go back to the way things were in the workplace before, and an interest in finding new and better ways to work. Longer-term expectations about such things as remote work, access to sick days and work-life balance remain up for debate.
