ʻImi Naʻauao
April 2021

In these challenging times, the Hawaii Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (HASCD) is committed to leaning into our mission to serve as a resource to all educators of Hawaii. We are happy to share our newsletter, 'Imi Na'auao, which means to seek enlightenment, wisdom and education.
If we want young people to do a better job talking across lines of difference, we need to provide them opportunities to practice when they are in school.
A school's vision statement shouldn't be pro forma. It should say what you're passionate about and what you commit to—for all students.
School leaders should understand their "purpose" and be willing to push back, says Richard Gordon, the 2021 National Principal of the Year.
How school leaders handle feedback correlates to well-rounded growth. A principal relays strategies for staying open during conversations.
One-time professional development sessions aren't sufficient to do so; instead, teachers deserve to experience a thoughtful cycle of learning that allows time for safe practice, collaborative analysis, reflection, and refinement as the goals for improving students' learning are realized.
Education Reflections

Trisha Kodama is a 4th grade teacher at Ali’iolani Elementary School. She is also a Hawai’i State Teacher Fellow and Hawai’i Society for Technology in Education Board Member.

Educator Eric Sheninger (@e_sheninger) shares learning recovery through acceleration as opposed to remediation. It is critical to move past remediations that will further exacerbate learning gaps while identifying and implementing strategies that represent a sound investment to help learners get back on track and accelerate their learning.

From Assistant Principals to Administrative Professionals, April is a month of celebrating many of those who help keep our schools running smoothly. Mahalo to all of the assistant principals, school administrative services assistants, secretaries, clerks, office assistants and more. Especially in the last year, our schools couldn't have functioned without you!
