Energy Office Holds Successful Energy in Schools Workshop for Teachers and Energy Managers
On July 27- 28, 2021, the Energy Office held "South Carolina Energy in Schools – A Workshop for Educators and Facilities Professionals." The workshop covered energy management at K-12 schools, pairing school district energy managers with teachers in a hands-on training session. Information and resources for the new K-12 energy lessons were also provided.
 
One resource mentioned during the workshop was Scrappy Circuits. You can build a circuit set for less than $1 per person using cardboard, binder clips, and an LED tea light.

Energy Spotlight: 2020 Mini-Grant Program
The Energy Office awards mini-grants each year to fund several high-impact demonstration projects in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean transportation. The Energy Office has just released an Energy Spotlight on the 2020 Mini-Grant Program.
South Carolina Pastor Uses Solar in Crusade for Clean Drinking Water
For decades, many of the residents of Florence, South Carolina, have been forced to boil their water in order to simply drink it. Leo Woodberry, pastor of the Kingdom Living Temple in Florence, acquired four solar hydropanels for $20,000 that are placed around his church. The technology uses sunlight and air to make clean water.

2021 ASCEM Fall Conference
The 2021 Association of South Carolina Energy Managers (ASCEM) Fall Conference will be held virtually October 5-7, 2021. Registration information and a draft agenda are available on the ASCEM conference page of the Energy Office website.

Nominations Due August 31 for ASCEM Awards 
During the 2021 ASCEM Fall Conference, awards will be given for Energy Manager of the Year and Energy Project of the Year. The size of the project is not a factor in determining awardees. Applications are due August 31, 2021.

South Carolina Congregational Energy Efficiency Challenge
Since launching in 2018, South Carolina Interfaith Power & Light's Congregational Energy Efficiency Challenge (CEEC) has saved houses of worship close to $600k by reducing energy usage over 5,000 MWh.This is equivalent to the CO2 sequestration of planting more than 60,000 trees. Congregations who enter into the CEEC are eligible to receive grant funding for their environmental initiatives.

Energy Office Hosts Virtual South Carolina Wind Energy Workshop
On August 18, 2021, the Energy Office held a virtual South Carolina Wind Energy Workshop. This workshop educated participants about the latest wind energy developments nationally and regionally. The virtual event served as a forum for discussion of economic development and supply-chain opportunities associated with wind energy.

USDOE Kicks Off ‘Summer of Solar 2021’ with Tool That Fast-Tracks Solar Power for Communities Nationwide 
The USDOE kicked off the ‘Summer of Solar 2021’ with the nationwide launch of the Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus (SolarAPP+) tool a free web-based platform that gives local governments the ability to expedite their review and approval of residential solar installation permits.

USDOE to Issue Funding Opportunity to Accelerate the Renovation of Buildings with Energy-Efficient Innovations
The US Department of Energy’s (USDOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy announced its intent to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) on behalf of the Building Technologies Office entitled, “Advanced Building Construction– 2021.” This FOA would fund research that could accelerate the renovation and construction of affordable, appealing, and energy-efficient buildings to ensure America has a carbon-neutral building economy by 2050.

Application Period Now Open to Compete in USDOE Solar Decathlon
The USDOE Solar Decathlon® is a collegiate competition that prepares the next generation of building professionals to design and build high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewables. Applications are due October 26, 2021.

About the South Carolina Energy Office
The Energy Office, housed within the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff, serves as the principal energy planning entity for the state. The mission of the Energy Office is to advance South Carolina’s energy strategy and policy through education and outreach. The Energy Office promotes the efficient use of all energy sources. In addition, the Energy Office encourages energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean transportation through a broad range of initiatives that include developing the State Energy Plan, providing technical assistance, offering financial assistance, conducting education and outreach, and maintaining an energy data resource.
