As we enter into 2025, I am sure that many of us are thinking about New Year’s resolutions.
We hope that 2025 will be a great year and we want to better ourselves and our lives in some way during it. I think there is something good and noble about this, but I would like to challenge you to think of it a bit differently.
On the First Sunday of Advent, I preached about making a New Year’s Resolution for our spiritual lives. I gave the spiritual exercise of making one resolution to grow in your relationship with Christ and to post it on the refrigerator so you have a visual reminder of what you are committing to this year. If you have not done this yet, now is a good opportunity.
How is the Lord inviting you to grow closer to Him in 2025? Here are some suggestions: attend Mass every weekend of 2025 as a family; go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation once a month; spend some time reading a spiritual book, maybe the life of a saint; dedicate 15 minutes each day to alone time with God, the faithful friend who is always there; turn the phone off after work and do not use it in the evenings; etc., etc., etc. Be creative! Be bold!
The Lord desires to draw near to you in 2025 and for you to grow closer to Him. I am reminded of one of my favorite Christmas choral pieces called “In the Bleak Midwinter” which is based on a poem by Christina Rossetti. The last verse says: “What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.”
The Lord wants nothing other than you and your heart! Consider the resolution you are making as the gift of your heart. I am confident that when we give ourselves and our hearts over to the Lord as a gift, it will be impossible for 2025 not to be a great year!
