The Lambeth Conference
After division and heroic effort, Lambeth Conference concludes with hope

By Janet Kawamoto

[The Episcopal News – August 8, 2022] The Lambeth Conference of 2022, themed “God’s Church for God’s World,” concluded on Aug. 7 with more unity than seemed possible considering the contention of its first few days.

Bishops from around the church have reported that they emerged hopeful from the two-week meeting; despite disagreements, especially over human sexuality, they found the meeting of bishops from around the Anglican Communion useful in developing relationships, increasing their understanding of the challenges with which provinces in 160 countries must contend, and emphasizing the unity of their faith in Jesus Christ in all its expressions.

There were moments of palpable unity in prayer, said Bishop John Harvey Taylor of Los Angeles, who reported daily from the conference on his Facebook page and blog. “This afternoon, the Holy Spirit’s warm breath came fully among us and swept almost 650 bishops to our feet to pray together, to be the body of Christ in unity,” he wrote on Aug. 2. “It happened right after the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, had stated yet again that we are of two minds on marriage equity, pro and con, with each perspective rooted in sincerely held beliefs about doctrine and Holy Scripture.”

Speaking Aug. 7 in his final keynote address at the University of Kent before the conference’s closing service in Canterbury Cathedral, Welby asked, “How should we act? Above all in relationship. That is the first and greatest call… because it is the scriptural call.”

Describing the Anglican Communion, Welby asked, “Is it argumentative? Oh yes. Is it diverse? Immensely. Is it God’s holy people? Certainly. Let us go out together in obedience – sent out, as God’s church for God’s world.”

GFS-LA delegates to the August 2022 National Assembly in Boston, Mass., pose with their banner after the closing ceremony, held in the Lindsey chapel at Emmanuel Church. Delegatres, from left, are: Martha Watson (St. John’s Cathedral, Los Angeles); Nessa Sesler (St. John the Divine, Costa Mesa); Maddie Duran (Saint Timothy’s, Apple Valley); Jaydin Sanchez (Holy Trinity, Covina); Margaret Nolde (St. John the Divine, Costa Mesa); Holly Shafer (Northern California); Anna Claire (St. Timothy’s, Apple Valley) and Priscilla Poulos (Holy Trinity, Covina).
Local GFS members, leaders attend National Assembly in Boston

[The Episcopal News – August 10, 2022] Four Girls Friendly Society members from the Diocese of Los Angeles and four adult leaders joined girls from all over the United States and beyond for fun, fellowship and service at GFS-USA's 2022 National Assembly, held at Simmons University in Boston, Mass.

According to Margaret Nolde of St. John the Divine Church, Costa Mesa, GFS-LA president, the assembly is held once every three years to hold elections, attend to the organization's business, engage in fellowship, perform community service, worship, and enjoy the sights.

Girls Friendly Society began in 1875 in England as an Anglican Church-related support organization for girls who had left their homes to work in cities, whether in factories and mills or as domestic servants. GFS offered the girls instruction in religion, appropriate activities for their free time and opportunities to make friends. In the United States, Elizabeth Mason Edson, daughter of an Episcopal church rector, established a GFS branch in 1877 to serve working girls in Lowell, Massachusetts.

GFS is now a worldwide Anglican/Episcopal organization serving girls from ages 5 to 21, organized in congregation-based chapters. Modern-day members take part in service projects, learn about the Christian faith, earn merit badges and, as always, have fun together.

Diocese of Los Angeles delegates were Anna Claire and Maddie Duran or St. Timothy’s Church, Apple Valley; Jaydin Sanchez of Holy Trinity, Covina; and Nessa Sesler of St. John the Divine, Costa Mesa. Adult leaders, in addition to Nolde, were Martha Watson of St. John's Cathedral, Los Angeles; Priscilla Poulos of Holy Trinity, Covina; and Holly Shafer, formerly associated with St. Francis' Church, Norwalk, now living in Northern California.

St. Mark's, Los Olivos, replaces rainbow flag in public event following theft

In a public ceremony attended by local civil leaders, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Los Olivos, replaced its rainbow flag after vandals removed and destroyed its predecessor.

The rainbow flag is flown in support of LGBTQ and other non-gender-conforming people in the community.

According to a local news report, two young adult men have been arrested and accused of stealing the flag. One of them posted a video on social media of the flag being burnt. Their names and ages have not been released.

“When they cut down your Pride flag at night…. We just stay strong and keep welcoming everyone… (FYI: new Pride flag appearing soon!),” said a St. Mark's social media post after the theft.

St. Mark's raised the new flag, saying it was "a new start on a better road," during a 10 a.m. ceremony on Aug. 10 that also was accessible via Zoom. Santa Barbara County Supervisor Joan Hartmann was among community leaders who attended to show support.

According to news reports, the district adttorney’s Office will review the evidence and decide whether additional investigation should occur or if enough evidence exists to file charges in the case.

Episcopal parish welcomes new vicar

[Thousand Oaks Accord - August 5, 2022] The Church of the Epiphany in Oak Park has named the Rev. Jamie Barnett as the new vicar of the Episcopal parish.

Barnett, who was the part-time priest-in-charge at the Oak Park church for the past year, was appointed by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

A Simi Valley resident, Barnett has guided the church as it sought to strengthen relationships and re-engage in activities and ministries that were curtailed due to the pandemic.

“So many people have gone through an abundance of changes and ambiguous losses over the past two years, leaving them spiritually hungry and yearning for connection,” Barnett said. “I am so pleased to be part of the joy as the community regains its vitality, makes new friends and bonds with the old. All are welcome here.”

Colin Henderson, retired pastor and Friendship Shelter founder, dies at 87

[Laguna Beach Independent – August 9, 2022] Colin Henderson, founder of the Friendship Shelter and former associate pastor at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, who is credited with stewarding a more compassionate culture toward people experiencing homelessness in Laguna Beach died July 26. He was 87.

As he confronted frail health and memory issues, Henderson moved to a retirement community in Leeds, United Kingdom. While living there, he was infected with COVID-19 and initially appeared to initially handle the virus well but his condition then deteriorated suddenly, Ros Henderson, Colin’s daughter, wrote in an email.

The British ex-pat arrived in town in 1985 after being hired by the Rev. Robert Cornelison. He and his wife Elin were married at St. Mary’s at a time when they couldn’t be wed at Henderson’s home parish in England because of her Jewish background.

Shortly after arriving at St. Mary’s, the parish noticed a man sleeping in the church, said Rev. Lester Mackenzie, current rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Cornelison tasked Henderson with making a lasting change in the homeless community. The priest would eventually see this endeavor as a calling from God and lead the founding of Friendship Shelter in 1988.

Bloy House invites all to Media and Ministry Class on Fridays beginning Aug. 19

Bloy House (Episcopal Theological School at Los Angeles - ETSLA) will offer a Media and Ministry class this fall, led by Canon Bob Williams, canon for common life for the Diocese of Los Angeles, beginning on Friday, Aug. 19.

What digital strategies are optimal for ministries in which you and your congregation (or other faith-based organization) are engaged? What are best practices learned amid the virtual/hybrid settings necessitated by the pandemic? What are helpful forms of outreach to seekers in all age cohorts – youth, millennials, Gen X, boomers, and elders – in various cultural groups?

Class sessions will explore these and other questions along with techniques for mobilizing congregants and clergy as ecclesial journalists using their own social media accounts to share good news of local ministry; practical tools for website design, fundraising, crisis response, media relations, and community building; and guidance for implementing a comprehensive communications plan.

A lively format is envisioned for presenting pro tips from accomplished media professionals, as well as technical skill-building modules customized to match levels of expertise – from beginning to advanced – on platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.

Williams shares in the leadership of communications, interfaith, and public affairs programs of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, while also serving as diocesan historiographer/archivist. For more information visit the Bloy House website.

The class will meet via Zoom from 7 to 10 p.m. on the following Fridays: August 19 & 26, September 9 & 23, October 7 & 21, November 4 & 18 and December 2 & 9. Audit fee: $250. Click here to register.

National CORE and the Hope through Housing Foundation invite the diocesan community to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for Santa Angelina, a new senior community on the grounds of Blessed Sacrament Episcopal Church, Placentia, on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m.

The new community is being developed by National CORE, a property planning and management company; Blessed Sacrament Church; and Episcopal Communities & Services, with support from the Diocese of Los Angeles, the Hope through Housing Foundation and the County of Orange.

The new development will provide 65 affordable apartment homes to seniors, ages 62 and up, who earn less than 60% of the area median income (AMI). Twenty-one apartment homes will be reserved as permanent supportive housing for unhoused or at-risk seniors.

Residents of Santa Angelina will live in an engaged, service-enriched village linked to the adjacent church and surrounding community through a network of paseos, plazas, and courtyards. A 1,500 square-foot community center will serve as a hub for events, supportive services, and programs. Other onsite amenities include laundry facilities and outdoor recreation space.

Stillpoint to begin 'Wisdom in Practice' program

Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality invites the diocesan community to consider joining a community of seekers in Wisdom in Practice, a "uniquely curated online experience of learning that incorporates the teachings of wisdom guides, transformational readings, small groups reflections and guided spiritual practices."

Participants virtually attend all Stillpoint one-day retreats, which are held virtually on Saturdays and include such topics as Native American spiritual teachings; the writings of Teresa of Avila; and The Wisdom of Wild Grace with Christina Valters-Paintner.

The cohort will also take part in about six retreats that focus on the teaching and exploration of spiritual practices. This year's theme is "Presence, Compassion and Gratitude." Participants also join small-group Wisdom Circles about six times a year for shared learning, personal reflection, spiritual practice, prayer and meditation and reading discussions.

"This unique online program is an invitation to re-intensify your spiritual life," according to the Stillpoint website. "It is a nine-month cohort-based experience designed to enrich your relationship with the Divine and support you into further enrichment of your life. From September through May, you will journey together with fellow seekers, mentors and spiritual teachers.

Tuition is $700; scholarships are available. For more information about the program click here. To join an interest list, click here.
Registration is open for Education for Ministry sessions to begin in September

Education for Ministry (EfM) a four-year program of course in scripture, theology and church history sponsored by the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, will be offered in about 20 congregations around the diocese, according to Gary Leonard, diocesan EfM coordinator.

EfM is taught in small-group settings, usually from September to May. In addition to academic studies, participants explore their personal beliefs and effective practice of their faith.

"During these uncertain times with COVID-19 disrupting our lives and the struggle to end racial inequality," Leonard wrote in a course invitation, "you may have been looking for new ways to deepen your faith or for a way to challenge old ways of thinking so that you can start putting your faith into action in challenging new and dramatic ways."

During a recent graduation service for EfM graduates, Bishop John Harvey Taylor remarked that the program helps "to address the disconnect in basic biblical understanding between those who preach and those who hear." Making that connection, he added, is vital to forming effecting lay leaders in the church.

New webpages provide resources for those exploring lay and ordained ministry

[Commission on Ministry] The Commission on Ministry (COM) serves the diocese by guiding individuals as they discern how they may be called to further lay or ordained ministry. In fulfilling this responsibility, COM advises the bishop in determining current and future needs for ministry in the diocese, and works closely with the Office for Formation and Transition Ministry.

This is a holy and deeply challenging ministry in an ever-shifting landscape. Recently, in an effort to provide transparency and update the documentation of the discernment process, COM published an extensive set of pages on the diocesan website. The information can be found here, or visit the diocesan home page, click on the dropdown menu on the right and select “Leadership: Are you called.”

The program is intended for "individuals seeking to deeply enrich our relationship with the Divine and help you recognize the ways that God/Spirit is present and working in your life," according to Stillpoint's website.

A trained facilitator accompanies members as they develop their skills in deep listening and personal discernment. "You will be introduced to the deep and expansive practices of spiritual formation, the ancient practice of spiritual direction, and a process of discernment for the next steps in your spiritual journey."

The Spiritual Journey Program is open to people of all denominations and faiths. In-person sessions will be offered in Pasadena, Santa Barbara and Long Beach. Two online options will also be provided: one of the online sessions is created intentionally for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals.
