Deanery 6 Welcomes Bishop Antonio with Conversation, Prayer, and Fellowship
The Diocese of Los Angeles' deanery celebrations continued Aug. 1 as people from across Deanery 6 gathered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pomona to welcome Bishop Antonio José Gallardo Lucena.
Hosted by St. Paul's, the gathering gave parishioners the opportunity to meet with Bishop Antonio, ask questions, and share stories about the ministries taking place in their congregations. Throughout the afternoon, Bishop Antonio listened to the experiences shared and encouraged those present to learn from one another and continue finding ways to strengthen connections across the diocese.
Bishop Antonio also experienced St. Paul's indoor labyrinth, a space for quiet prayer and reflection that added another meaningful dimension to the day's celebration.
The event reflected the diversity of Deanery 6, with conversations and welcomes shared in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, as congregations continued building relationships and celebrating this new chapter in the life of the Diocese.

Diocese to offer audit workshops and new parish resources
The Administration and Finance team, led by The Rev. Canon Susan Stanton, is preparing a new series of audit workshops and resources to help parishes complete their annual audits with greater confidence and less stress.
The initiative includes a new diocesan Audit Workbook, along with in-person workshops, live Zoom training, and on-demand video resources designed to guide parish audit teams through the annual audit process while strengthening sound accounting practices and internal controls.
Workshop dates, registration information, and access to online resources will be announced in the coming weeks.

Diocese of Los Angeles Raises $8,900 for Venezuela Earthquake Relief
The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles has raised $8,900 in support of communities affected by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela, following a special offering received during the consecration and installation of our new Bishop of Los Angeles the past July 11–12.
The funds will help support the ongoing efforts by Episcopal Relief & Development in response to the devastating twin earthquakes that struck the northwestern and central parts of the country on June 24.
Bishop Antonio José Gallardo Lucena expressed his gratitude for the generosity shown across the Diocese, "I am touched by the great generosity of the people in our Diocese."
The Diocese extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed. Together, these gifts are a tangible expression of Christ's love and solidarity with the people of Venezuela during a time of great need.

Holy Spirit Community to Honor Jonathan Myrick Daniels on August 13
The Holy Spirit Community will celebrate the life and ministry of Episcopal seminarian and martyr Jonathan Myrick Daniels on Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. in the Jonathan Daniels room at St. Paul's Commons. The celebration includes a potluck dinner at 7 p.m., and all are invited to contribute, as they are able. The service of Holy Communion begins around 7:30 p.m. Our reflection and discussion will lead with a short video on Jonathan's life based on the film "Here Am I, Send Me: The Story of Jonathan Daniels." RSVP appreciated here to help us plan for seating at dinner.
Jonathan Daniels modeled Christian commitment by personally responding to and confronting injustice, just as we are called to do in America today. He was killed on August 20, 1965, by Tom Coleman, a part-time deputy sheriff, in Hayneville, Alabama, while shielding 17-year-old Ruby Sales from a racist attack, thus saving the life of the young Black civil rights activist. The two were working in the nonviolent civil rights movement in Lowndes County to integrate public places and register Black voters after passage of the Voting Rights Act that summer. His death generated further support for the civil rights movement.
In 1991, Jonathan was designated as a martyr in the Episcopal church and is recognized annually in our calendar on August 14. Learn more about him and how our meeting room at St. Paul's Commons came to be named in his honor here.

This concert will be directed by Jamond McCoy, whose own musical roots began in the Black church and whose career spans gospel, jazz, R&B, and contemporary music. Save the date: Episcopal Church invites all to Celebrate 50th anniversary of LGBTQ+ 'full and equal claim' resolution
All are welcome to attend the historic gathering commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 General Convention resolution declaring that LGBTQ+ people have a full and equal claim to the pastoral care and support of The Episcopal Church. The commemoration will be held Thursday - Saturday, Sept. 3-5, in Minneapolis. The event, “Full and Equal: 50 Years in Pursuit of a Promise,” will both celebrate progress and acknowledge the work that remains while equipping participants to engage in that work in their parish and diocesan contexts.
The three-day gathering will include storytelling coaching led by The Moth Project, plenary sessions, workshops and a banquet premiering a documentary film chronicling the last 50 years. It will conclude with a Festival Eucharist featuring Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe as presider and Bishop Gene Robinson as preacher. Spanish-language interpretation will be available.

Aniversario de la Resolución Sobre el 'reconocimiento pleno e igualitario' de las Personas LGBTQ+
Todas las personas están invitadas a participar en este encuentro histórico que conmemorará el 50º aniversario de la resolución de la Convención General de 1976 que declaró que las personas LGBTQ+ tienen un derecho pleno e igualitario a recibir el cuidado pastoral y el apoyo de la Iglesia Episcopal.

Archbishop of Canterbury ends Africa tour with calls for healing from church’s role in slavery
[Religion News Service] After renewing her commitment to a controversial £100 million Church of England fund apologizing for the church’s historical ties to the slave trade, Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally ended her 10-day Africa tour Aug. 4, calling for peace and healing.
“Our world cries out for healing. Millions of people live in fear. Millions are displaced. Hundreds of children do not have access to school,” said Mullally in a sermon on Aug. 4 from the Cameroonian capital of Yaoundé. “I heard you speak of all these things, and I know the people of Cameroon have suffered far too long.”
The trip marked Mullally’s first visit to Africa since her March 25 installation, when she became the first woman to serve as archbishop of Canterbury. She is also the first in her role to visit Cameroon.

Episcopal Farmworker Ministry calls for aid as government decreases H-2A workers’ wages
[Episcopal News Service] Episcopal Farmworker Ministry, a ministry in the Diocese of East Carolina based in Dunn, is calling for aid to help serve H-2A farmworkers after the federal government reduced their wages this year.
The average hourly wages for farmworkers who are in the United States seasonally under the H-2A visa program have been reduced by between $1 and $7 depending on the state. In North Carolina, the hourly wage rate dropped from $16.16 to $12.78.
The wage reduction has made it so farmworkers cannot support themselves, let alone send money to their families, according to the Rev. Fred Clarkson, executive convener of Episcopal Farmworker Ministry and priest-in-charge of the Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia (Episcopal Church of the Holy Family), which operates the ministry.

Still your soul at Nightsong - a meditative chanted service led by vocalists. This ethereal form of the beloved Episcopal service of Compline creates space for us to lay our anxieties to rest as we seek peace and restoration. Nightsong is held regularly on the third Sunday of each month, live-streaming.

Lend a hand on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m., rain or shine, to help us help the neediest families in our community.
