Deanery IV Welcomes Bishop Antonio for the First of Ten Deanery Gatherings
The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles began a new series of deanery gatherings as Bishop Antonio José Gallardo Lucena visited Deanery IV, the first of ten deaneries he will visit in the coming months.
Hosted by the Rev. Canon Roberto Martínez, vicar of Iglesia de La Magdalena in Glendale, clergy and lay leaders from across the deanery gathered for worship, fellowship, and conversation, marking the beginning of Bishop Antonio's journey to meet communities throughout the diocese.
Bishop Antonio shared that the gatherings have two purposes: to celebrate with those who were unable to attend his consecration and to create opportunities for him to meet the people of the diocese, listen to their stories, and strengthen relationships across congregations. He also introduced the Rev. Canon Jon Feuss, Canon to the Ordinary, explaining his role in supporting the bishop's ministry and the life of the diocese.
Each congregation was able to answer a single question: "What is God doing in your parish?" Representatives from every church shared stories of ministry, growth, and hope, offering a glimpse of the many ways God is at work across Deanery IV.
Throughout the gathering, participants reflected on the hope this new chapter brings and the shared commitment to continue proclaiming the Gospel and serving their communities together. Bishop Antonio expressed his gratitude for the warm reception, saying, "From the moment I arrived in the parking lot, I felt very, very welcome."
The deanery gatherings will continue throughout the summer and fall, offering opportunities for congregations across the diocese to welcome Bishop Antonio and share in the life and mission of the Church.

El Deanato IV recibe al Obispo Antonio en el primero de diez encuentros de deanato
La Diócesis Episcopal de Los Ángeles dio inicio a una nueva serie de encuentros de deanato con la visita del Obispo Antonio José Gallardo Lucena al Deanato IV, el primero de los diez deanatos que recorrerá en los próximos meses.
Bajo el liderazgo del el Rvdo. Canónigo Roberto Martínez, vicario de la Iglesia de La Magdalena en Glendale, clérigos y líderes laicos de todo el deanato se reunieron para compartir un tiempo de oración, convivencia y diálogo, marcando el inicio del recorrido del Obispo Antonio por las comunidades de toda la diócesis.
Durante su mensaje, el Obispo Antonio explicó que estos encuentros tienen un doble propósito: brindar la oportunidad de celebrar junto a quienes no pudieron acompañarlo en su consagración episcopal y, al mismo tiempo, conocer personalmente a las personas de la diócesis, escuchar sus historias y fortalecer los lazos entre las congregaciones. También presentó al Rvdo. Canónigo Jon Feuss, Canónigo al Ordinario, explicando su función como colaborador cercano del obispo en el acompañamiento de la vida y el ministerio de la diócesis.
Cada congregación respondió a una misma pregunta: "¿Qué está haciendo Dios en su parroquia?" Representantes de cada iglesia compartieron testimonios de ministerio, crecimiento y esperanza, ofreciendo una muestra de las muchas maneras en que Dios está obrando en el Deanato IV.
A lo largo del encuentro, los participantes reflexionaron sobre la esperanza que trae este nuevo capítulo y renovaron su compromiso de seguir proclamando el Evangelio y sirviendo juntos a sus comunidades. El Obispo Antonio expresó su gratitud por la cálida bienvenida al comentar: "Desde que llegué al estacionamiento me sentí muy bienvenido."

Help Episcopal Relief & Development respond to Venezuela earthquakes
Episcopal Relief & Development invites financial support for response to June 24 twin earthquakes that have left more than 4,700 people dead, 16,740 injured, and thousands more missing, according to July 15 reports. Contributions to ERD's International Disaster Fund may be made here.
Requesting prayer and support for Venezuela, his home country, Los Angeles Bishop Antonio J. Gallardo L. has asked Episcopalians to support ERD relief efforts, noting that his family members who reside in Venezuela are safe yet deeply concerned by the crisis.
In a June 26 social-media posts, Bishop Gallardo L. wrote: “This afternoon I joined close to 100 leaders from different faith traditions united in prayers for Venezuela. We asked for God’s compassion, wisdom and generosity. We prayed for the victims, children and families, the Venezuelan government, the leaders from other countries, for pastors and the clergy community on the ground, medical personnel, rescuers, non-profits and churches, donors, volunteers, and all who are helping. We prayed for shattered dreams, for separated families, for unity, and for the land. Please support the efforts financially through Episcopal Relief & Development, a trusted agency that supports work with local partners to provide critical relief today and long-term recovery support to those impacted by disasters like the earthquakes in Venezuela. Instituto de Liderazgo is a diocesan program of Christian, theological, and ministerial formation created to strengthen lay leadership in Latino/Hispanic contexts within the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Los Angeles.
This program offers holistic formation that brings together faith, Episcopal identity, critical reflection, contextual reading of Scripture, liturgical practice, pastoral care, and transformative community engagement. Grounded in a communal and contextual pedagogy, and faithful to the Episcopal tradition, the Institute understands formation as a process of discipleship, discernment, community strengthening, and ministerial praxis.
Classes are held in Spanish, in person at St. Paul's Commons, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles.

CLUE encourages all to join demonstrations and fasts in solidarity with Adelanto hunger strikers
Detainees at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center and Desert View Annex began a hunger strike in mid-May over horrific and inhumane conditions, CLUE reported, despite the GEO Group's claims that it isn’t happening. The hunger strikers are demanding due process, bond reform, improved conditions, adequate medical and mental health care, nutritious food, accountability for deaths, and the right to organize and communicate.
In response, CLUE and other faith and immigrant rights organizations have been occupying and fasting in solidarity at the office of First Assistant United States Attorney Bilal A. Essayli, calling for an immediate investigation into human rights abuses at the facility.

Save the date: Episcopal Church invites all to Celebrate 50th anniversary of LGBTQ+ 'full and equal claim' resolution
Save the date for a gathering commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 General Convention resolution declaring that LGBTQ+ people have a full and equal claim to the pastoral care and support of The Episcopal Church. The celebration will be held Thursday - Saturday, Sept. 3-5, in Minneapolis. The event, “Full and Equal: 50 Years in Pursuit of a Promise,” will celebrate progress and acknowledge the work that remains.
The three-day gathering will include storytelling coaching, workshops, a banquet, and a Eucharist featuring Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe as presider and Bishop Gene Robinson as preacher. Spanish-language interpretation will be available.

Venezuela Episcopalians’ earthquake response includes long-term emotional, spiritual recovery
[Episcopal News Service] Episcopalians in the Diocese of Venezuela are still physically and emotionally recovering from back-to-back earthquakes that devastated the northern state of La Guaira and Caracas, the nation’s capital, nearly a month ago.
The recovery process, according to Litoral Ecuador Bishop Cristóbal Olmedo León Lozano, who serves as provisional bishop of Venezuela, will take “a long time.”
“There is uncertainty regarding Venezuelans’ emotional and spiritual well-being – uncertainty stemming from the pain of losing a family member and from not receiving immediate aid or the specific type of aid they need. …They are living in a state of despair,” Lozano told Episcopal News Service in a July 15 in-person interview in Spanish. He was chaperoning a delegation of young Episcopalians from his diocese at Evento de Jóvenes Episcopales in Rionegro, Colombia. He has been regularly communicating with clergy and lay leaders in the Diocese of Venezuela.

Young Latin Americans, church leaders reflect on ‘beautiful’ experience at Evento de Jóvenes Episcopales

The young Latin American Episcopalians who attended Evento de Jóvenes Episcopales, or EJE26, sung those lyrics – Spanish for “we are light, we are salt, Episcopal youth” – several times daily throughout the July 13-16 gathering here at De La Salle Casa de Encuentros. The song encompasses the event, which was a celebration of Latino culture and youth empowerment through shared faith and learning.
“I had a beautiful experience. My heart opened more during this retreat, and I’ve come to understand that my soul is a missionary soul,” Kelin Mendez, a parishioner at Mision Episcopal El Mesías in Tegucigalpa, Diocese of Honduras, told Episcopal News Service.
