Bishop honored with portrait unveiling, art show ‘In the Key of Heart’

by EN Staff

The official portrait of Bishop John Harvey Taylor was unveiled May 30 at St. Paul's Commons, Los Angeles, along with the opening of “In the Key of Heart” an art installation based on the theme of Taylor's episcopate, “Feeding Hungry Hearts.” The portrait, painted by Juan Fernando Bastos, was a gift of Geoffrey Rusack and Alison Wrigley Rusack, the son and daughter-in-law of the late Bishop Robert Rusack, fourth bishop of the Los Angeles diocese.

More than 70 were in attendance at the celebration, where Canon Kathy O'Connor, who was instrumental in the commissioning of the portrait, did the official unveiling.

In a speech at the event, Taylor shared that his “Feeding Hungry Hearts” theme was based on Bruce Springsteen's song “Hungry Heart.” The song, Taylor said, proposes that everyone has a hungry heart. “In the church, our ministry is to satisfy the heart’s hunger by encouraging the people of God to glorify God and care for one another and their neighbors.

“I think we’re all conscious of the heart’s resilience as well as its tenderness and vulnerability,” Taylor said. “The human heart is one of the marvels of the universe, surely one of God’s masterpieces. For most of us, between two and a half and three billion heartbeats will get us from our Alpha to our Omega. And yet the heart can be so easily damaged — by disease, of course, and also an unkind word, or an act of injustice or inhumanity. Loneliness, isolation, alienation, and hatred — these and other sicknesses can strain and break our hearts.”

“This marks an exciting and prayerful step forward in our journey together as a diocese, and we are deeply grateful to all who have helped shape this comprehensive reflection of our hopes, challenges, and vision for the future of this diocese,” wrote Bishop Search Committee Co-Chairs Thomas Diaz and the Rev. Bloy House invites all to June 13 dinner honoring retired President Gary Hall and Dean Linda Allport, welcoming new Dean Paul Daniels

All in the diocese are invited to a June 13 dinner honoring Bloy House’s retired president, the Rev. Canon Dr. Gary Hall, and its retired dean, Canon Linda Allport, while welcoming the Very Rev. Paul Daniels as new dean. RSVP for the dinner – set for 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Commons, Echo Park – via email here by June 6. There is no cost to attend.

Hosted by Bishop John Harvey Taylor and the Bloy House board of trustees, the event will thank Hall and Alport for their years of service to Bloy House prior to their retirement last year, while also welcoming Daniels, who has just completed his first year of service. Originally planned for last January, the dinner was rescheduled due to the Palisades and Eaton fires.

“Gary and Linda, working in concert with our innovative board, reimagined Bloy House as a focal point for lay leadership formation and life-long Christian education,” Bishop John Harvey Taylor told The News. “Now called Sacred Leadership Licensing, the program Linda organized for training lay leaders is having a transformative impact at missions and parishes around the diocese. Their successor, Dean Paul, calls Bloy House ‘a hub for Christian innovation.’ We know our guests will enjoy this opportunity to give thanks for cutting-edge theological education leadership past, present, and future.”

Inquiries about the June 13 dinner may be emailed to bishopsoffice@ladiocese.org.

Preaching unconditional love, Riverside mission church draws new members

By Pat McCaughan

One ministry of St. George’s Church involves showing up at the UC-Riverside campus with signs bearing messages like “God Loves You, period” and “God is a Black Trans Woman.”

For the Rev. Karri Backer, vicar of St. George’s since August 2021, maintaining a ministry of presence at UC-Riverside is all about sharing love at the margins, and the mission congregation has focused outreach efforts to the local LGBTQ+ community.

At times, the response has been heartfelt, with students cheering and applauding. “A girl came up to us and said, ‘is this really a church?” recalled Co-Bishop’s Warden Mary Simons, a retired UC-Riverside student affairs director.

“And, after a couple read the signs, a woman told me, ‘I saw the word God and thought oh no, but then I read your signs and I’m like, thank you so much,’” Simons said.

But there have been other more challenging encounters. “There were people who did not appreciate this expansive idea of God, surrounding us and asking questions and quoting Scripture verses. It was a different crowd completely,” Backer recalled.

St. George’s has been a Riverside Pride sponsor the past three years and, when attending events, “People ask us if we have pamphlets about the church. We say, no, we’re just here to tell you God loves you and help you flourish. It’s a sincere and authentic message,” she said.

From the Bishop Search Committee: Meet the Application and Interview Design Subcommittee

One in a series of introductions to the subcommittees of the Bishop Search Committee

Members of the Application and Interview Design Subcommittee are the Rev. Dr. Rachel Nyback (St. Cross, Hermosa Beach), chair, Ms. Chet Longid (Holy Trinity and St. Benedict, Alhambra), the Rev. Elizabeth Molitors (Trinity, Santa Barbara), the Rev. Carlos Ruvalcaba (St. Stephen's, Hollywood).

What does your subcommittee do?

Our committee is responsible for the initial application. We discerned what information we need, given what we have heard from the listening sessions, and what questions we want answered in this initial introduction to a candidate. After applications are in, we will help formulate the Zoom interview process and questions, and also assist with planning for the discernment retreat.

What does that involve?

It involves asking initial important questions and then going deeper with each interaction with a candidate. When our committee was formed, someone described it as going from a blind date (application), to dating (Zoom interview), to going on a trip together (retreat). Each part of the search process helps the candidates learn more about our diocese, and helps us learn more about the candidates. We reviewed all of the information from the Holy Cow! survey and from the listening sessions, both in person and on Zoom. We worked to formulate questions and a process that addresses the hopes and concerns as voiced by our diocese, and as reflected in our profile.

Markham B. Campaigne, former headmaster of St. Margaret's Episcopal School, dies at 83

Markham B. Campaigne — a former headmaster of St. Margaret's Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano who was instrumental to the schools growth as the longest-serving headmaster in the school's history —died May 28. He was 83 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and their four children, Markham Baker Campaigne Jr., Daniel Paul Campaigne, Sarah Joy (Campaigne) Zell, and Deborah Louise Campaigne.

Under his leadership, St. Margaret's doubled in size to its current level of more than 1,200 students, and the campus was increased by nearly 20 acres.

Campaigne remarked that “together we have built a world-class school while remaining true to our spiritual, caring and integrity-based roots.”

Campaigne was a strong supporter of school arts and athletics programs and was often present at school events.

Prior to serving as headmaster at St. Margaret's, Campaigne was assistant headmaster, as well as math teacher and basketball coach, at The Bishop's School, La Jolla, from 1977 -1986.

Campaigne graduated the Naval Academy, and served in the Marine Corps for 22 years, including in Vietman.

"His loss is immense and will be felt throughout the St. Margaret’s community," said Jeneen Graham, current head of school at St. Margaret's, in a May 30 statement. " Mr. Campaigne was a pillar of the St. Margaret’s community and one of the most influential figures in the history of our school. We will miss him, yet we will remember his visionary leadership, his thoughtfulness, his strong faith and his love and care for the Tartan community."

Visiting St. Columba’s, Camarillo, and St. Richard of Chichester, Lake Arrowhead

June 2, 2025

A new rector, thinking of new ways to share the saving, unifying power of the sacraments of Jesus Christ with his parish’s neighbors. A mountaintop mission on the 40th anniversary of its dedication, living out Christ’s justice in a cruel time. This was how I experienced the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles over the weekend, from Camarillo in Ventura County to Lake Arrowhead, back out San Bernardino County way.

What Jesus would have us do this Pride month

June 1, 2025

Episcopalians are blue, red, and sometimes a good Anglican shade of purple. But our rainbow colors don’t run when our government attacks our trans and nonbinary siblings. Every American, no matter how small their cohort, was endowed by their Creator with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When our politics reward cruelty instead, the people of the United States need to see our church standing up for our baptismal promise to respect the dignity of every human being. As Pride month gets underway, let’s say it again. The Episcopal Church stands with trans and nonbinary people and repudiates Trump’s politics of fear and hate.

Save the Date: All invited to celebrate World Refugee Day June 20

IRIS’s entire $3.3 million budget was eliminated in January. IRIS has had to reduce staff while trying to meet the increasing needs of its clients for legal and social services. IRIS is currently depending completely on the IRIS Emergency Fund in order to keep the doors open. To support World Refugee Day, IRIS needs donations of gifts cards, essential items, giveaways, and gift bags. Learn more about donating items to IRIS at Donate — Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service.

On the road: Deacons welcome invitations from congregations

Deacons of the Diocese of Los Angeles are on the road and available for preaching and worshiping with congregations – and to offer forums about the diaconate’s unique ministry of “interpreting the needs of the world to the church, and the church to the world.”

“It is our joy to visit large and small congregations, encouraging active ministry in a world that needs to know the way of love more than ever,“ notes the Venerable Laura Siriani, archdeacon of the diocese, who joins Bishop John Harvey Taylor in guiding and supporting deacons in their ministries.

Currently, 30 deacons serve congregations from Santa Barbara to Rancho Santa Margarita and east to San Bernardino. Their ministries reach people on the margins and in the social gaps: immigrants, those who are homeless, incarcerated, hospital patients, their families, and those in recovery.

“Deacons preach, teach, lead studies, and pastor in their congregations. Our deacons are eager to tell their stories,” Siriani adds.

Any congregation wishing a deacon’s visit during the summer or fall is invited to contact Archdeacon Siriani at lsiriani@ladiocese.org.

Malibu parishioner shares in production of new documentary ‘Homeschooled’

The new documentary “Homeschooled,” released June 1, is available for group screenings in local theaters, notes Thomas Pettinelli, a parishioner of St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Malibu, and vice-president of development for Branded Pictures Entertainment.

Ahead of the documentary’s streaming release, producers are reaching out to homeschool communities and faith-based organizations across the country to offer the opportunity of hosting private group screenings of “Homeschooled” in local theaters. It’s a unique way to experience the magic of movies — together, on the big screen, producers say.

Further information may be requested from Pettinelli at tapettinelli@gmail.com.

As Daniela Emanuelle writes in Buzzfeed: “Homeschooled does an extremely tasteful job of highlighting dark subjects like bullying and suicide, all while showing the inevitable excitement that comes with a group of kids who are about to go to their first prom. By the end of the movie, you won’t be ready to say goodbye to the diverse cast of characters whose stories will resonate beyond the credits.”

Pilgrimage to detention centers along U.S.-Mexico border highlights immigrants’, employees’ needs

[Episcopal News Service] Episcopalians from five states and the District of Columbia are in the middle of a five-day pilgrimage to immigration detention centers along the U.S.- Mexico border in New Mexico and Texas. At each stop they, along with area residents, offer a prayer vigil for detainees and for center employees harmed by the system.

“We want to continue to shine a light on immigrants, because [Americans] are not aware of what is happening, what we are supporting as taxpayers and voters,” the Rev. Leeann Culbreath, a priest in the Diocese of Georgia and one of the pilgrimage organizers, told Episcopal News Service in a phone interview while traveling to the group’s third stop. “We are responsible for this system and what is happening to these people, who are all beloved children of God.”
