Faith, civic leaders decry shooting at San Diego Islamic center

As San Diego Episcopal Bishop Susan Brown Snook called for prayer and action to stop gun violence after the May 18 shooting at her city's Islamic center, Bishop John Harvey Taylor conveyed solidarity from the Diocese of Los Angeles and reached out to Southland Muslim leaders. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass joined a May 19 news conference (pictured above) led by the Muslim Public Affairs Council at the Islamic Center of Southern California urging an end to hate crimes and violence. For those seeking to redouble efforts to reduce gun violence, Bishop Taylor recommended resources available at Brady United.

Claremont School of Theology awards honorary doctorate to Bishop John Harvey Taylor

By Bob Williams

Recognizing Bishop John Harvey Taylor's decade-long "prophetic leadership" in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and beyond, Claremont School of Theology (CST) awarded him an honorary doctorate of divinity May 19 during commencement exercises at Westwood United Methodist Church near UCLA.

CST's co-presidents, retired United Methodist Church Bishop Grant Hagiya and Dr. Jeffrey Kuan, conferred the honors, presenting a traditional academic hood and diploma to Taylor, who is an alumnus of the school and the formerly co-located Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Los Angeles.

"We want to thank you, Bishop Taylor, for your many commitments and the kind of prophetic leadership you have provided for all of us to make this place we call home a better place," said Hagiya, noting that he and Taylor both served as bishops in Southern California and as members of the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders.

Diocese invited to join Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries at L.A. Pride June 14

The Bishop’s Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries warmly invites the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles community and friends to join the Annual L.A. Pride Parade on Sunday, June 14 at 11 a.m.

"This year’s LA Pride theme, 'Rising with Pride,' calls us to show up with courage, joy, and faith — bearing witness to the Way of Love in the heart of our city," planners say. "As a diocese, our presence at Pride is more than participation—it is proclamation. Together, we embody a Church that celebrates, affirms, and stands alongside LGBTQ+ people as beloved children of God. We will gather as an official diocesan parade contingent, offering a visible and faithful witness of inclusion and love. A Holy Eucharist service will be offered prior to the parade, with Bishop-elect Rev. Dr. Antonio José Gallardo Lucena grounding our witness in prayer and community."

“Now more than ever, we are called to be visible in our faith in Christ—proclaiming that all of God’s children deserve dignity, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Thomas Diaz, chair of the Bishop’s Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries. “We are called to be bearers of that love, making it known that the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles not only welcomes you, but affirms that all LGBTQ+ people are beloved children of God.”

Registration is required to be part of our diocesan parade contingent. To sign up as an individual or as a congregation, please email: edlalgbtqinfo@gmail.com. Registration link and additional details will follow initial email.

Orange County Women’s Chorus to present Border Crossings: Music Beyond the Boundaries

The concert will celebrate music by immigrants and refugees, with songs that emphasize ties that bind, not walls that divide, planners say.

It’s not a lecture. It’s a joyous program of beautiful music by our siblings from other shores.”
