Series of events will launch episcopate of the Rev. Dr. Antonio José Gallardo Lucena

Planning continues for consecration, installation, and deanery celebrations to welcome new bishop

By EN Staff

The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles will welcome the Rev. Dr. Antonio José Gallardo Lucena as its eighth bishop with July 11-12 liturgies and watch parties followed by weekly deanery celebrations.

The consecration, set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, at All Saints Church in Pasadena, will be a ticketed event complemented by watch parties screening the livestream across the six-county diocese.

The new bishop’s installation on July 12 will start with a walk for Love and Truth at 2 p.m. from St. Paul's Commons to St. John’s Cathedral, followed by Sunday Evensong at the Cathedral at 4 p.m. Sunday Evensong will be a ticketed event that will also be livestreamed. Thereafter, a series of weekly Saturday celebrations will welcome the bishop to each of the diocese’s 10 geographic deaneries.

Full information about ticketing, along with scheduling and locations of watch parties and deanery celebrations, will be published next month when finalized by the consecration and transitions committees on behalf of the diocesan Standing Committee. An online platform providing participation details is nearing completion.

Sharing his vision with planning team members, Bishop-elect Gallardo L. asked, “How can we make these events intimate and simple, while honoring the tradition of our church?” Expressing his desire that congregations and individuals “feel that they are part of the celebrations,” he added: “What is the Spirit of God inviting us to be and do in 2026 and beyond?”

This approach is in keeping with the customary set by Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe, who will officiate at the consecration liturgy.

Gallardo L. was elected by Diocesan Convention on Nov. 8, 2025, to succeed L.A. Bishop John Harvey Taylor, who is retiring after nearly 10 years in office.

Corona parish expands intergenerational ministry using 'Immersed in Worship' resources

By Pat McCaughan

Two-year-old Oliver and other members of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Corona “walked” a symbolic road to Emmaus during an intergenerational worship service on a recent Sunday morning.

Together, they placed, in the baptismal font, stones representing “what you are carrying in your heart,” according to the Rev. Patricia Stansfield, rector. “Two disciples walked a road, carrying confusion, grief, and hope,” she said. “We walk that same road. We also walk with Jesus, carrying our own hopes and our grief.”

The movement continued, as portions of the gospel (Luke 24:13-29), were read at four stations created throughout the church. At each station, worshippers received a prompt, to assist delving deeper into the well-known gospel lesson about the two disciples who did not recognize Jesus in their midst.

Led by Mark Milliron of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Yucaipa is releasing daily Morning Prayer podcast episodes in an effort to spread scriptural knowledge.

"Passion and purpose are grounded in knowledge and belief," Milliron said. "Absent knowledge of one's faith, it's very hard to be enthusiastically engaged.

"Ideas inform our beliefs and motivate our actions. So it's important to challenge Christians to engage with and think about their faith by presenting the scriptures with thoughtful commentary."

Each podcast episode includes scripture and commentary, daily service, and the confession, through to the prayer of St. Chrysostom.

Visiting St. Joseph’s, Buena Park

April 29, 2026

When I visited St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Buena Park in 2018, I took a picture of Jordyn as she handed me a piece of cake. The Rev. Canon Mary P. Trainor looked on. We re-created the scene Tuesday night with the Rev. Dr. Cindy Voien, Mary’s successor as vicar. Now 15, Jordyn completed the process by once again giving me a piece of cake. It was a joy to get to know her and her devoted grandmother, Helen, a little better.

Visiting St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hacienda Heights

April 27, 2026

In its bulletin, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hacienda Heights notes that it offers pastoral care in Cantonese, English, Mandarin, and Tagalog. One doesn’t often see such an announcement. Long a pioneer in multilingual, multicultural ministry, this hearty mission, where the energetic the Rev. Dr. Fennie Hsin-Fen Chang serves as vicar, was Sunday’s stop on my retiring bishop’s farewell tour. On July 11, by the grace of God, Antonio Jose Gallardo Lucena will become bishop as well as rector of St. Thomas’s mission. I know they’re going to love one another.

Sermon at the annual deacons’ retreat

April 25, 2026

Last weekend, from Fresno to downtown Los Angeles, I experienced an immersion in the Sacred Order of Deacons that reinforced something I’ve long believed. Deacons can be at risk of being held back by virtue of their excellence.

On Saturday morning, I was at the consecration and ordination of our own Greg Kimura as sixth bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin. In the fellowship time as well as the liturgy, we were drenched in deacons. San Joaquin’s second of three bishops provisional, LA’s former bishop suffragan Chet Talton, was devoted to the diaconate. Perhaps that is a factor. I reconnected with several deacon friends and made new ones. They had been successful in prior vocations, from business to marriage and family therapy.

Book of Common Prayer draws Gen Z to the Anglican, Episcopal tradition

[Episcopal News Service]  In St. Luke’s Chapel at the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, Books of Common Prayer slump in chair pockets, their spinal integrity lost to decades of common worship. Every day, seminarians pray liturgies that connect them to Anglican and Episcopal tradition.

The Book of Common Prayer is the primary liturgical resource of The Episcopal Church. It was last revised in 1979, but supplements and trial liturgies have since been authorized. The prayer book’s preservation of church history, communication of Episcopal theology, and evolution as a symbol of unity draws Gen Z seekers interested in an inclusive Christian community grounded in tradition.
