Website will offer details on events to welcome bishop-elect
A new online hub of information related to the upcoming series of events welcoming the Rev. Dr. Antonio J. Gallardo L. as eighth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is set to launch Friday, May 29. Produced in English and Spanish, the webpages offer details of the July 11 consecration at All Saints Church in Pasadena and concurrent watch parties around the diocese; the July 12 installation at St. John's Cathedral during Evensong preceded by the afternoon downtown "Walk for Love and Truth"; and upcoming summer Saturday celebrations in each of the diocese's 10 geographic deaneries. Topics include ticketing for the consecration and installation, opportunities to share in giving gifts planned for the new bishop, and arrangements for a July 10 clergy gathering with Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe. A special edition of the Episcopal News Update -- to be emailed May 29 to all subscribers -- will provide links to the new website, which has been created by Samantha Wylie, diocesan program officer and Diocesan Convention coordinator, working in collaboration with the consecration and transition committees.

Anne Sawyer elected dean of St. John's Cathedral
By Bob Williams
The vestry of St. John's Cathedral, Los Angeles, has elected the Rev. Anne Sawyer as dean, Bishop John Harvey Taylor announced in a May 21 message welcoming the vote and confirming his full approval.
"“Dean Sawyer’s leadership has been a blessing and revelation – as a pastor during a time of transition, a prophet of the justice and love of our God in Christ, and an institution builder with a bracing vision for the future of St. John’s Cathedral," Taylor said. "I give thanks for her and for lay leaders who called her as dean, which I had the inestimable pleasure of affirming.”
Sawyer has served the cathedral since 2023 as interim priest in charge, most recently under the provision of "special circumstances" that allowed for her permanent appointment. Previously she served as rector of New York City's St. Mark's Church in the Bowery and as a co-founder of Imago Dei Middle School in Tucson, Ariz.

Diocese invited to join Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries at L.A. Pride June 14
The Bishop’s Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries warmly invites the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles community and friends to join the Annual L.A. Pride Parade on Sunday, June 14 at 11 a.m.
"This year’s LA Pride theme, 'Rising with Pride,' calls us to show up with courage, joy, and faith — bearing witness to the Way of Love in the heart of our city," planners say. "As a diocese, our presence at Pride is more than participation—it is proclamation. Together, we embody a Church that celebrates, affirms, and stands alongside LGBTQ+ people as beloved children of God. We will gather as an official diocesan parade contingent, offering a visible and faithful witness of inclusion and love. A Holy Eucharist service will be offered prior to the parade, with Bishop-elect Rev. Dr. Antonio José Gallardo Lucena grounding our witness in prayer and community."
“Now more than ever, we are called to be visible in our faith in Christ—proclaiming that all of God’s children deserve dignity, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Thomas Diaz, chair of the Bishop’s Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministries. “We are called to be bearers of that love, making it known that the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles not only welcomes you, but affirms that all LGBTQ+ people are beloved children of God.”
Registration is required to be part of our diocesan parade contingent. To sign up as an individual or as a congregation, please email: edlalgbtqinfo@gmail.com. Registration link and additional details will follow initial email.

Bishop Taylor names Nate Hicks, Jonathan Roberts honorary canons
For more than a decade of diaconal and presbyterial ordinations at St. John's Cathedral in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, Jonathan Roberts and Nate Hicks served as ministers of ceremonies, sharing their expertise in guiding sacramental liturgy. Jonathan (pictured at right) died last year. During a May 12 service or Evening Prayer at their home parish, All Saints' Beverly Hills, assisted by priest-in-charge Gary Hall and music director Canon Craig Phillips, Bishop John Harvey Taylor named Hicks and Roberts honorary canons of the diocese. Jonathan's spouse, Dayna Lynn Roberts, accepted on his behalf. Also, recognizing the parish’s recent centennial, Bishop Taylor presented the congregation with the gift of an illuminated manuscript by Vincent Mazzuchelli, 99, of St. Thomas, Hollywood, highlighting the words of Psalm 107:1.

Pentecost Day sermon at St. Andrew’s, Fullerton
May 25, 2026
Now that we’ve received the Holy Spirit, the question is what we do with it. Whether heaven’s gift is for me or the world. His courage restored by Jesus Christ’s mighty Resurrection and glorious Ascension, Peter was pretty clear. Citing the prophet Joel, he said that once we’re in the Spirit, we prophesy — young and old, the enslaved and free, every gender. We raise our voices for God’s vision of righteousness, justice, and love, because that’s what prophets do. St. Paul is just as clear in 1 Corinthians: “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”

A farewell visit as bishop to St. Andrews, Fullerton
May 25, 2026
I wish I could remember who suggested I try St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Fullerton. It was 1995, and my life was in flux. A lifelong and confirmed Episcopalian, as an adult, I’d dipped my toe in a couple of Methodist and Episcopal parishes. Finally an ancient, persistent voice, whispering from deep inside, said I had serious work to do.

Driving with the Golden Rule
May 23, 2026
The golden rule isn’t just for church. It applies everywhere. And it can be a matter of life and death. I love motorists’ John 3:16 bumper stickers. They should also try Matthew 7:12, in which Jesus says not to operate your two-ton hunk of death-dealing metal and flimsy fiberglass in a way that’s dangerous toward others if you don’t want others to do the same to you.

Bible study and supper at St. Martin’s in Twentynine Palms
May 21, 2026
Out in Twentynine Palms, they still remember how much Bishop Robert Rusack loved their Shrove Tuesday pancakes. Frances, the bishop’s warden, has worshiped at St Martins in the Fields on and off since 1957. As I sat with her and other congregants in the parish kitchen, she gestured toward the spot where the bishop stood, first in line, while her father, Garland, manned the griddle.

Orange County Women’s Chorus to present Border Crossings: Music Beyond the Boundaries
The Orange County Women’s Chorus looks forward to presenting their third concert of the season, Border Crossings: Music Beyond the Boundaries on May 30 (7 .m.) and 31 (3 p.m.) at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church, 18631 Chapel Lane, Huntington Beach.
The concert will celebrate music by immigrants and refugees, with songs that emphasize ties that bind, not walls that divide, planners say.
“We’d planned a different program for our May concert, but the headlines from Minneapolis and around the nation these past few months cried out to us for a change of course,” said Artistic Director Eliza Rubenstein. “This performance is a feast of music by composers who came to the United States seeking safety and success, and a reminder of the gifts that immigrants bring—and have always brought—to our country. It’s not a lecture. It’s a joyous program of beautiful music by our siblings from other shores.”
Tickets ($35 for adults, $30 for seniors, $15 for students, plus $2.00, $1.75, and $1.50 ticketing fees, respectively) are available at ocwomenschorus.org or may be purchased at the door.
