Professor Devon Carbado to return for 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. celebration
Professor Devon Carbado of UCLA will again keynote the diocese’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, to be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Holy Faith Church, Inglewood (pictured below right).

Carbado, an associate vice chancellor at UCLA and a professor at the university's school of law, addressed last year’s gathering, saying on that occasion, “Law and morality are not the same thing." Furthermore, he said, “The civil rights trajectory, the pathway to social change, is not linear. It reflects what we might call a reform entrenchment; a movement forward, then a movement backward.” (A report on the 2019 event is here.)

Carbado’s legal expertise includes constitutional criminal procedure, constitutional law, and critical race theory. His scholarship appears in law reviews at UCLA, Berkeley, Harvard, Michigan, Texas, Cornell, Yale and more. Carbado has won many teaching awards, including being elected professor of the year by the UCLA School of Law classes of 2000 and 2006. In 2005 he was named an inaugural recipient of the Fletcher Foundation Fellowship. Modeled on the Guggenheim fellowships, it is awarded to scholars whose work furthers the goals of Brown v. Board of Education. In 2016 he was named an Atlantic Philanthropies Fellow, and in 2017 he was awarded the American Bar Foundation’s Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law. Carbado has also taught at UC Berkeley Law School, University of Virginia Law School, and Harvard Law School. Carbado earned his bachelor’s degree in history from UCLA and his law degree from Harvard Law School. He is connected with UCLA's Critical Race Studies Program, which focuses on racial justice advocacy, racial justice teaching, and racial justice law.

All are welcome at the service, which also will feature The Episcopal Chorale, a renowned gospel group directed by Canon Chas Cheatham, pictured below at the 2019 MLK event.

Stillpoint to offer Advent poetry retreat in Westlake Village
Poet and chaplain Alexandra Donovan will lead "Waiting on God in the Dark: An Advent Poetry Retreat," sponsored by Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 32111 Watergate Road, Westlake Village 91361. According to the event announcement, "Advent, among other things, is a season of transition. It is a time of waiting, of uncertainty. In the story of Mary and Joseph, there were big risks taken, and hope resided in the unknowing. Across time, cultures, and religions, humans have gathered together in just such times to stand with one another at these thresholds. We danced. We sang. We wrote poetry. Poetry was never meant to be relegated to castle courtyards or stuffy classrooms– it belongs at the fire, it belongs with the dance. Come join us for a full-day poetry retreat in which we will play with poetry, reclaiming the music within all of us." Alexandra Donovan (Alex Martin) is a hospice chaplain with Compassus Hospice in Fort Collins, Colorado, and a poet. She has taught poetry and writing-to-heal workshops. Her first chapbook of poetry, Mother Stump, came out in August 2018 from Yak Press. Cost for the workshop is $68 ($78 with lunch). To register, click here.

Call for proposals: The Theology of Gratitude
The United Thank Offering (UTO) and Bexley Seabury Seminary invite scholars in philosophy, religion, theology, and other relevant disciplines to offer proposals for papers on The Theology of Gratitude. This call for proposals comes in recognition that gratitude has become a phenomenon in popular culture and is written about in books ranging from self-help to the Harvard Business Review. Scholarly engagement has developed primarily in the psychological community, which has demonstrated the correlation between gratitude and improvement in personal health and the development of strong, healthy relationships. There is far less scholarship arising within the theological community. Scholars representing diverse perspectives and experiences from all disciplines, generations, and cultural groups are invited to submit a 1000-1500-word proposal plus bibliography of how they will engage in a rigorous exploration of human expressions while living in a complex world.
