One of the final actions taken by this year's meeting of Diocesan Convention was to pass unanimously a resolution (text here) affirming the work of the diocese's Sanctuary Task Force -- aka Sacred Resistance -- and inviting the diocesan community to join in its action and advocacy for justice for refugees and immigrants.

Bishop John Harvey Taylor called upon Southland Episcopalians to “come home” to renewed unity, commitment, connection and caring, during a Nov. 30 address to delegates on the opening day of the 123rd annual meeting of the Diocese of Los Angeles.

Bishop John Harvey Taylor named four new honorary canons of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul on Nov. 30 during the newly reinstated convention dinner during the annual meeting at the Ontario Convention Center.

At the 129th meeting of Diocesan Convention, now under way at the Ontario Convention Center, the first ballot -- carried out this year for the first time by electronic voting -- is completed.

The 123rd annual meeting of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles concluded Dec. 1 after prophetic worship, spirited addresses and a lively panel discussion about housing justice.

Thanks to the new electronic balloting system being used at Diocesan Convention, now in its second day, quick consecutive votes yielded final election results for the remaining offices to be filled.

A series of videos of key portions of the 2018 meeting of Diocesan Convention, produced by Chris Tumilty of the Communications Office, have been posted to the diocese’s Facebook page.

Photo galleries and additional reports will be published in the coming days. All reporting for this year's convention will be carried on the Episcopal News website.

Women now make up nearly half the clergy of the Diocese of Los Angeles. But women of color are still underrepresented, comprising only a small percentage of clergy in the diocese. Each year, the fund will offer financial assistance to help one or more women from under-represented groups pursue ordination, including scholarships to one of the Episcopal Church’s seminaries.
For more information, visit the fund’s web page at diocesela.org/women-of-color, or contact Kim at [email protected].

Photographer Marie Plakos
Marie Plakos describes herself on her website as “an artist who uses my camera to reflect the beauty of the people, their culture, and the landscapes of this Earth.” She is the author of several photographic books, including Heart and Soul, about the people of Burma (Myanmar) and Threads That Bind Us, about women in Mexico.

Retired chaplain publishes memoir, Ordained by Angels
The Rev. Jerry Anderson, retired chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital, recently published Ordained by Angels: A Memoir of an AIDS Chaplain. The book looks back at how the AIDS epidemic and Anderson's struggle to be accepted as a gay priest shaped his personal and professional life. It delves into how he fought to keep his faith in a loving God and maintain his sanity in the midst not only of friends and loved ones dying, but the pushback by conservative elements of the church. Anderson served as a chaplain for 23 years, recently retiring as Good Samaritan's director of pastoral care. He now assists at All Saints by-the-Sea Church in Santa Barbara. He has served parishes in the Diocese of Chicago, Northern Michigan, Washington, D.C., and Southeast Florida, as well as Los Angeles. In 1986 he helped found The Episcopal Caring Response to AIDS, a nonprofit in the Diocese of Washington where he was the chaplain. He also helped launch Episcopal AIDS Ministry at Trinity Cathedral in Miami, Florida. For more information, visit his website.

St. Philip's, Los Angeles, celebrates its 111th year
By Shirley Smith

Nearly 100 people attended the 111th anniversary celebration of St Philip the Evangelist Church at 2800 Stanford Avenue in Los Angeles on Nov. 25. A service was conducted in both English and Spanish for the parishioners coming from the local neighborhood of the church, as well as surrounding cities and even cities as far away as Las Vegas and Redlands. They came as a body united in their support of St. Philip’s efforts to enrich the community and the parish by welcoming diversity over its 100-plus years. Today, the historically Black congregation successfully blends more than ten individual cultures into its weekly worship services and church outreach. Read more here.
