Asian-American church leaders meet at St. Paul's Commons
Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce is host this week to the second annual Asian-American Leadership Retreat at St. Paul's Commons, attended by some 25 clergy and lay leaders from across the Episcopal Church. The group met with The Gathering, an Asian ministries group in the Diocese of Los Angeles; paid a visit to the Skid Row History Museum, where they heard a presentation about Street Symphony by cellist Dustin Seo; heard from jail chaplain Sharon Matsushige Crandall; attended a panel discussion on "Asian Americans in a White Normative Context"; and more. They also enjoyed hospitality, worship, and some early-morning walks around Echo Park Lake. The retreat will conclude on Thursday, Jan. 16. Photo: Dustin Nguyen
New Echo Park exhibit to feature paintings by veteran priest Warner Traynham
“Abstractions in Oil,” an exhibit of paintings by the Rev. Canon Warner Traynham, will be on view at St. Paul’s Commons Jan. 21 - March 31, with an Artist’s Preview Reception set for 3 - 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Bishop John Harvey Taylor will host an reception Feb. 13, 6 - 8 p.m., in honor of Traynham, who retired 18 years ago as rector of St. John’s, Los Angeles. All are welcome at both receptions.

“I tell people that painting is a kind of therapy for me,” Traynham notes in his artist’s statement for the exhibit. “In ministry, you are not always certain of your impact. With painting, when you put the pigment on canvas or board, the feedback is immediate. Either it looks the way you want or it does not. In which case you can continue, or wipe it out and begin again, until you get it to look the way you want, or accept the accident and incorporate it in your vision.

“I began doing representational paintings, like the ‘Icon of the Black Christ’ (included in the exhibit) and now I am mostly doing abstractions. My abstractions derive sometimes from the things I see, but mostly from my imagination. With abstractions, I call myself a colorist. I expect this exhibit will make it clear why.”

Born in Baltimore and educated at Dartmouth, Oxford and the Virginia Theological Seminary, Traynham describes himself as “a self-taught painter.”

Selected paintings are available for purchase from the artist. St. Paul’s Commons is located at 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles 90026, with two levels of free secured parking. For further information, email media@ladiocese.org or call 213.482.2040, ext. 240.

Pictured above: Central to the upcoming “Abstractions in Oil” exhibit featuring the work of the Rev. Canon Warner Traynham is this canvas titled “Icarus,” recalling the main character in the classic Greek myth.
Workshop on Feb. 15 to consider church's role in civil discourse
“Make Me an Instrument of Peace: A Guide to Civil Discourse,” a workshop addressing the problems of a "polarized, hyperbolic and angry" public conversation, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Commons (formerly known as the Cathedral Center), 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026. The program will be led by Alan Yarborough of the Office of Governmental Relations of The Episcopal Church.

According to organizers, "Political divides are growing deeper, and many of us look ahead to 2020 with concern and worry. We do not have to continue this way. Peace-building involves learning from and working with others, while also sharing different perspectives with humility and vulnerability. To solve our world’s greatest challenges, we must learn to unlock the diversity of ideas and viewpoints as an asset for creating stronger solutions. This civil discourse training aims to enhance our ability to learn from and understand one another, and to apply that practice to public policy conversations."

Yarborough, a former Episcopal Church missionary in Haiti, will help guide thinking and provide concrete ways to promote civility and understanding about the future of the commonweal, especially in an election year. All are welcome, lay and ordained, church members or not. Read more here.
