OC Pride events June 22
GLEAM-OC, the Orange County branch of the diocesan ministry with LGBTQ persons, invites the diocesan community to join them for Orange County Pride on Saturday, June 22. According to GLEAM-OC, "The Episcopal Church will be present to share God’s love and the good news of a church where no one is asked to stop being themselves in order to participate." Events will begin with Eucharist at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana, 614 N. Bush Street, Santa Ana 92701 (714.543.9389) at 10 a.m. The community Pride Parade will step off at about 11:30 a.m.; the Episcopal presence will depart from Messiah with its signs and banners, returning there afterward to put them away. GLEAM-OC will then staff a booth at the nearby Pride Festival, where they will give away rainbow cross necklaces, postcards, pens, hugs, and information about the Episcopal churches in Orange County. All are invited to participate. For information, visit the GLEAM-OC Facebook page here.
Pride Sunday at St. John's Cathedral
Join St. John’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 30, at the 11:00 a.m. mass to celebrate LGBTQ Pride month on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall with guest preacher the Rev. Christopher Montella and a special music offering from the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, "a chorus of transgender, gender non-conforming/gender non-binary and intersex Individuals using our voices to bring awareness, understanding, power and VICTORY for the Trans Community. We want every trans- identified individual to hear and appreciate the lyrics of our signature song, 'You Have More Friends Than You Know!'” The Rev. Christopher Montella has been a member of GLEAM, the Bishop's Commission for LGBTQ+ Ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles since 2011 and currently serves as its chair. He received a master of divinity degree from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a diploma of theology from Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont, where he serves on the board of trustees. He is currently priest-in-charge of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Santa Clarita. St. John's Cathedral is located at 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles 90007. For information, call 213.747.6285.
Pride Sunday at Trinity, Redlands
LGBTQ+ Pride will be the theme of the morning service at Trinity Episcopal Church on Sunday, June 30 at 9:30. All are welcome. The Episcopal Church affirms that the LGBTQ+ community is wanted and needed as part of the Body of Christ. The church recognizes strength in diversity and the radical inclusivity of Jesus. Festive rainbow decorations will adorn the sanctuary. All are invited for rainbow cake after the service. After the service, a rainbow flag will be permanently hung in the Fern Street entrance to the church. The flag will include the brown and black stripes, as was first displayed in Philadelphia, to denote welcome for people of color. The rainbow flag will be a constant visual reminder that all are accepted, and raise awareness of Pride in general. June has been designated as LGBTQ+ Pride month in commemoration of the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village NYC in 1969. In that encounter, members of the LGBTQ+ community fought back against police who had raided the Stonewall Inn. The first gay pride marches to commemorate the event were in 1970. A Stonewall National Monument was erected in 2016. Trinity Episcopal Church is located at 419 S 4th Street in Redlands. For information, call 909.793.2014.
