Deanery News
New dean named for Deanery 6
Bishop John Harvey Taylor has named the Very Rev. Keith Yamamoto as new dean of Deanery 6, which encompasses the East San Gabriel Valley. Yamamoto, rector of St. Mark's Church, Upland, succeeds former dean the Rev. Canon Kelli Grace Kurtz, previously vicar of St. John's Church, La Verne, who recently was called as rector of All Saints Church, Riverside.

Each of the ten deaneries in the Diocese of Los Angeles is led by a clergy dean, who is appointed by the bishop and designated by the traditional title "The Very Reverend." The same title is used for the dean or provost of a cathedral or a seminary. Each deanery also elects a president, usually a lay person.

Deans of the ten deaneries are:

Deanery 1: Santa Barbara/Ventura Counties
The Very Rev. Canon Greg Larkin

Deanery 2: Tri-Valley
The Very Rev. Nancy Brown

Deanery 3: Westside
The Very Rev. Canon Ian Elliot Davies

Deanery 4: Central Los Angeles/Glendale
The Very Rev. Canon Roberto Martinez
The Very Rev. Canon Fernando Valdez (co-deans)

Deanery 5: West San Gabriel Valley
The Very Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger

Deanery 6: East San Gabriel Valley
The Very Rev. Keith Yamamoto

Deanery 7: The Inland Empire
The Very Rev. Canon William Dunn

Deanery 8: Long Beach/South Bay/Southeast
The Very Rev. Paula Vukmanic

Deanery 9: North/Central Orange County

Schedule for deanery pre-convention meetings announced
Convention is Friday - Saturday, Nov. 15 - 16 at Riverside Convention Center
As Diocesan Convention approaches each year, meetings are held in the deaneries of the diocese for clergy, convention delegates and all interested Episcopalians. At each meeting, one of the bishops of the diocese or the canon to the ordinary, and a member of the finance team - the chief financial officer or diocesan treasurer - is available to take part in discussions about matters that will be considered at the convention, such as the budget for the next year, proposed resolutions, or changes to the diocesan constitution and canons. Because the convention will be held several weeks earlier in 2019 than in past years - Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16 at the Riverside Convention Center - the meetings will be held in October rather than November.

Collaborative Leadership and Ministry training coming to L.A.
In 2014, under the leadership of its lead consultant, the Rev. Ronald Byrd, the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) conceived and launched its Basics of Collaborative Leadership and Ministry curriculum to help congregations, dioceses, and other agencies of the Episcopal Church build the strong lay-clergy leadership teams that are at the heart of every Episcopal congregation. This training will come to the Diocese of Los Angeles in a two-day workshop on Friday - Saturday, April 26 - 27, sponsored by the Episcopal Church’s Office of Black Minsitries and led by Byrd, who is missioner for Black Ministries on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s staff.
All are invited to take part in the program, which will emphasize three defining aspects of good teamwork:
  • Relationships: How to build relationships through spiritual practices, communications styles, retreats/fellowship, in family-sized vs program sized congregations;
  • Process: How to run a good meeting, building the agenda, consensus decision making, and facilitating conversation in meetings;
  • Results: How to effectively create goals, accountability, and ideas for feedback.

An overview of the Collaborative Leadership and Ministry program, a draft agenda for the workshop, and more about Ronald Byrd are here. Accommodations will be available at the Cathedral Center Retreat Center. More details will be posted as they become available. (This updated post includes a correction and some new information.)
