Absalom Jones service remembers faith, struggle of African-American ancestors, honors seminarians
The Rev. Ronald Byrd, missioner for Black Ministries for The Episcopal Church - pictured at left with Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce - preached on the need for the church's work and relationships to be grounded in faith at the Absalom Jones Worship Service on Feb. 24 at St. Philip's Church in Los Angeles' Leimert Park neighborhood. Bishop Bruce celebrated the Eucharist and the Rev. Guy Leemhuis was worship leader for the service, held in memory of the first African-American to be ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church (in 1802). "We welcomed the Holy Spirit and our ancestors through dance, drum, and song," the Rev. Jamesetta Hammons and Stacey Forte-Dupre wrote to The Episcopal News. "We honored our ancestors through an offering of libations; similar to some who pray asking saints to intercede. As we invoked our ancestors through the pouring of water we asked them to bless our efforts, supporting us in our work towards healing and reconciliation for 400 years of injustice." In addition, participants had opportunities to learn about a few of the many little-known contributions made to American life by Black Americans, including Isaac Johnson, inventor of a folding bicycle frame (below left). They also played a board game based on the life of Absalom Jones (below right). Hammons is chair of the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, which sponsored the event with the Diocese of Los Angeles. UBE was established in 1968 to promote the ministry of and to African Americans in the Episcopal Church and the world. During the service, UBE honored three African-American seminarians in the diocese: Andrea Arsene, who is in her second year of study at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley; Dominique Piper, a postulant for the vocational diaconate and member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Placentia; and Shawn Evelyn, a third-year student at Virginia Theological Seminary and candidate for Holy Orders.

We will draw on the Book of Acts for some inspiration, with gatherings on Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday evening. We are invited to participate with the Brothers in their prayer times during the entire retreat. Free time on Saturday afternoon for relaxation, private time, fellowship, or however you choose.
