Riverside City Council unanimously supports St. Michael’s housing project

By Pat McCaughan

A May 7 meeting of the Riverside City Council erupted in cheers, applause and a standing ovation as members unanimously approved a $2 million loan to pave the way for development of 50 affordable housing units at St. Michael’s Episcopal Ministry Center.

Los Angeles Bishop John Taylor and about 30 clergy – in Riverside for a May 6 - 8 diocesan clergy conference – attended the meeting in a show of support for the project, an attempt to help alleviate homelessness in the city.

“This project is an expression of the Gospel and a harbinger of our absolute future for our whole diocese,” Taylor told the Episcopal News after the vote. “The Holy Spirit will care for institutions that care for God’s people. This is our faith. Thanks to the vision of Bishop Jon Bruno and the Rev. Canon Mary Crist … there is resurrection at St. Michael’s.”

Crist, who is the priest at St. Michael’s, said she was thankful to clergy colleagues and community partners alike for their support, calling the approval a “team effort.”

When she arrived in 2012, St. Michael’s was no longer functioning as a church, but had maintained an ongoing homeless ministry, she said. Located at 4070 Jackson Street, it is near two community parks where homeless people frequently congregate.

Eventually, after prayer, listening and serving, the ministry has flourished and the community is vibrant, she said, and excited about the prospects of hosting affordable residential housing.

L.A. City Pilgrimage prepares to take young people on mission trip to inner city
Registration is open for the 2019 L.A. City Pilgrimage, a week-long urban immersion program for high school students within the Diocese of Los Angeles sponsored by the Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries, to be held June 23 - 27. It is a week of service in and around Los Angeles, but it is also a week of "looking for God where God can be found." Teens in the program are housed at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul's retreat center, and spend their time with the poor and marginalized of the city. "This experience encourages students to question who their neighbor is and how to make their neighbor the subject of engagement and community rather than the object of pity. Through listening those on the margins of society and witnessing first-hand the consequences of economic injustice, students grapple with how to love their neighbor and evaluate their Christian faith through the lens of Christ’s ministry and work." ‘Everything is awesome’ as building begins on massive Lego replica of National Cathedral
Project raises money for ongoing earthquake repairs, connects people with church’s beauty
[Episcopal News Service] Eight years after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake toppled parts of Washington National Cathedral as if they were toy blocks, people of all ages are spending $2 a brick to construct the world’s largest Lego cathedral to help pay for the building’s remaining repairs. When the builders are finished in two or three years’ time, they will have used between 400,000 and 500,000 bricks – every single one of them off the shelf – to build a minivan–sized scale model over 13 feet long and 8 feet tall that features all the cathedral’s landmark parts, both inside and out, including the rose window, Bethlehem Chapel and the central tower. The completed model will weigh about 1,350 pounds. (Anyone can contribute.) Read more here. Story by the Rev. Mary Frances Schjonberg, ENS. Photo: Washington National Cathedral
