Congregations asked to share Thanksgiving offerings with Good
Samaritan Hospital
In 1885, Sister Mary Wood, an Episcopal nun from the San Francisco area, saw a desperate need for health care in her adopted home and opened the nine-bed Los Angeles Hospital and Home for Invalids. After the Diocese of Los Angeles was carved from the statewide Diocese of California in 1897, it took charge of the facility, which had been renamed Hospital of the Good Samaritan in honor of a generous donor who stepped in when help was needed.

Today Good Samaritan Hospital, with its 408 beds, 18 surgical suites, 625 medical staff members and state-of-the-art facilities, continues as an independent institution of the diocese. Its chaplaincy program, though including clergy and lay ministers of different faiths to serve its ever-changing neighborhood, still continues under the auspices of the Episcopal Church.

Early in its history, the diocese designated offerings given at its congregations on Thanksgiving Day to support the work of the hospital — a custom still observed by some congregations. With the support of Bishop John Harvey Taylor, the Rev. Michael Bell, current director of pastoral care, is asking all churches of the diocese to revive this custom specifically to support this program.

"Providing robust, interfaith chaplaincy and pastoral and spiritual care to our hospital staff, patients and families depends more and more on financial gifts from individuals, organizations, and charitable foundations," says Bell. The hospital's operating budget continues to strain under challenges in healthcare financing nationally and locally, but we remain committed to serving the disproportionate share of patients in our neighborhood struggling to afford preventative healthcare and insurance. Thanksgiving gifts of any size from the offerings collected in your congregations will help us sustain our chaplaincy and the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE program that provides formation for so many ministers in our diocese as well as a meaningful spiritual care to our diverse hospital community."

To contribute, congregations and individuals can mail checks payable to Good Samaritan Hospital (write "CPE Fund" in the memo line) to Good Samaritan Hospital, Pastoral Care Department, 1225 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90017. At any time of year, contributions may be made here . For more information, contact Bell at [email protected] .
It's time for annual benefits checkups for diocesan employees
Annual Benefits informational meetings for benefits administrators and diocesan employees are scheduled for the week of Oct. 30 - Nov. 2 at several locations in the diocese. Administrators also need to be aware of some other important information:

1. Employee roster-updating information with CPG
All congregations, schools and institutions with active benefit-eligible employees must have an assigned senior or administrative officer to handle the employee roster. These officials were invited to have access to the Church Pension Group's online system last year. If your administrative officer for employee roster has changed, please send in the new administrator's information to Anilin Collado at [email protected]. Employee roster officers must activate their account and be familiar with entering employee information and understand the necessity to do so. Training materials, such as a guide and pre-recorded webinar, are available on the ER section of ARC here. CPG's training webinars on the ER-enabling MLPS feature will be offered Nov. 8 and 29. Click here to register for an upcoming webinar

2. Fidelity's simplified contribution platform (SCP)
The current paper-based PLRS system for submitting remittances to CPF's Lay Defined Contribution and RSVP plans contribution is being replaced with a new, quick and efficient system. During 2018, each employer must transition to the new platform. Effective January 1, 2019, the paper-based system will no longer be available.

3. Clergy Pension Plan Revision - What is assessible compensation?
Learn about the changes that take effect January 1, 2019.

Benefits plans for clergy and lay employees
October 29 to November 16, 2018 is an important time period for health benefits annual enrollment for the calendar year 2019. Several pieces of informational material are available for employees:
  • a post card from the Episcopal Church Medical Trust that has been mailed to all eligible employees
  • contact information for a Health Advocate who will be able to assist our benefit eligible employees in making a decision regarding changing health coverage for 2019, especially if they are enrolled in one of the Anthem BCBS plans that will no longer be offered next year.
  • Anthem Plans Migration, which provides an overview of all the Anthem BCBS, EPO and PPO Plans that will no longer be offered next year and includes suggestions of possible plan to move to in 2019. All consumer directed health plans under Anthem BCBS and Kaiser will remain the same. Only those enrolled in an Anthem EPO and current PPO plans will be affected. The majority of our members enrolled in an Anthem BCBS plan will need to change to a new plan next year.
  •  The Health Plan Booklet for 2019 under the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles' Group Plan. It provides information regarding health plan offerings for 2019.

Dodgers/Red Sox World Series challenge to benefit immigration service centers
The Dodgers and Red Sox are in the World Series, and the Rev. Mike Kinman, rector of All Saints Church, Pasadena, has issued a challenge to the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston. On Sunday, October 28, the two congregation will take up special collections for immigrant legal services in their home dioceses. In Los Angeles the designated agency will be IRIS (Interfaith Immigration and Refugee Services); in Boston it will be Episcopal City Mission’s legal fund for immigrants. The winning team’s agency will receive the funds collected by both congregations. The losing team’s dean or rector will wear the winning team’s cap at church the Sunday after the series ends. Organizers hope "this challenge will not only raise awareness of and support for legal counsel for immigrants and refugees but offer an antidote to the polarization and division in our nation as fans of opposing teams work together toward a common goal." Any other congregation that would like to take part in the challenge may contact Keith Holeman, director of communications for All Saints Church, at  [email protected]  or 626.583.2739.

Ontario parish ponders mysteries of 'great cloud of witnesses' at All Saints Solemnity
Christ Church, Ontario, will present an evening of worship and learning at "Solemnity of All Saints: Surrounded By So Great a Cloud of Witness," a high mass followed by a lecture delivered by retired professor Dwight Vogel, beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1.
Witnessing what? Is there anything that is not already visible to everybody, laid out in the open? Is there any mysterious wisdom that gets communicated to us through ancient rituals? And why inside a cloud anyway?
The Rev. Dwight Vogel, retired professor of theology and ministry at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, will consider these questions in a lecture following the All Saints service. Vogel also directed the program in church music and conducted the choir at Garrett, where he taught liturgy. He is a leader in liturgical and sacramental renewal, chiefly through his work with the Order of St. Luke, a dispersed ecumenical religious order focused on sacramental and liturgical scholarship and practice, and on spiritual formation more generally. Ordained in the United Methodist Church, he holds a Ph.D in theology from Boston University. In retirement, Vogel lives at Pilgrim Place in Claremont. Christ Church is located at 1127 N. San Antonio Avenue, Ontario 91762. For information, visit the parish website here.
