Filipino ministry immersion experience planned for Sept. 14
New Community, the multicultural ministries program of the diocese, will continue its series of full-day Asian Immersion experiences in which lay and clergy leaders will learn more about and engage with Asian cultures and communities on Saturday, September 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with "Exploring the Filipino Culture and Communities." As one of the fastest growing and the second largest Asian group in the U.S., the Filipino community is very diverse and often overlooked. Hosted by Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce at Holy Trinity-St. Benedict Episcopal Church, Alhambra, the day will begin in Hultgren Hall with registration and coffee at 8:30 a.m. and include presentations and discussions on the Filipino populations in Southern California. Participants also will experience a bit of the indigenous Pinoy and Igorot cultures of the Philippines. Presenters will include the Rev. Brent Quines (Holy Trinity-St. Benedict Church), the Rev. Gerry Engnan (St. Mark's Church, Van Nuys) and Mr. Mel Soriano (All Saints Church, Pasadena). Holy Trinity-St. Benedict Church is located at 412 N. Garfield Avenue, Alhambra. Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 in observance of Labor Day. Most offices will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Nominees for diocesan office invited to submit videos along with other candidate information
Canon Steven Nishibayashi, Secretary of Convention, has requested that candidates for diocesan offices to be elected at this year's Diocesan Convention (Nov. 15 - 16) provide a video — taken on their phones — in which they identify themselves, their congregations, the office for which they are running, and a short statement of their reasons for seeking the office. Links to these videos will be provided along with the usual candidate information (photo, short biography and statement) in the Nominations pages of the convention website.

David Boyd of All Saints Church is Santa Barbara's Man of the Year
The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced that David Boyd, parishioner at All Saints Church, Santa Barbara, has been named its 76th Man of the Year, a distinction "for extraordinary individuals whose kindness, generosity, and dedication are creating meaningful change in our community." Boyd, 91, will be honored for his service to the community at a reception at the Four Seasons Biltmore on Wednesday, Sept. 4. According to the citation, "David Boyd has dedicated most of his adult life to the service of others, first in the defense of his country as a U.S. Navy officer for 30 years, and more recently serving those most vulnerable in Santa Barbara County. He retired from the Navy as a captain, USN in 1980, and during the last 20 years he has been an active volunteer for various outreach programs and projects working with and for All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Montecito Emergency Response and Recovery Action Group (MERRAG), Transition House, Casa Esperanza/PATH, Cleveland Elementary School, Habitat for Humanity, People's Self-Help Housing, Carpinteria Children's Project, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara County Elections, and St. Brigid Fellowship of St. Athanasius Orthodox Church." Bloy House professor is contributor to book on interfaith worship, prayer
The Rev. Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook, dean of faculty and professor of practical theology and religious education at Claremont School of Theology and professor of Anglican Studies at Bloy House, is a contributor to Interfaith Worship and Prayer: We Must Pray Together, published in July by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. The book, which features a foreword by the Dalai Lama, is described as "a ground-breaking book explaining the importance and benefits of interfaith prayer and worship, with contributions from 12 different religions: Hinduism, African Traditional religion, Judaism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Unitarianism and Bahá’í. Interfaith worship and prayer can present challenges, but this book demonstrates that in a world of many religions and cultures, there is an urgent need for religions to come together both at times of crisis and at times of common commitment (for example,to the environment)." The book is edited by Christopher Lewis, an Anglican priest and former Dean of Christ Church in the University of Oxford; and Dan Cohn-Sherbok, Reform rabbi and professor emeritus of Judaism at the University of Wales.
New music by Jon Dephouse of Thad's is online
The Rev. Jon Dephouse, lead minister at Thad's, an Episcopal community in Culver City, along with his band "Resident" recently released "Darkness That Shines," an EP (extended play -- more than a single, shorter than an album). It is available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify here. Dephouse previously served at St. James' Church, South Pasadena, where he composed music for its "Sacramentum" evening worship services.

Daughters of the King to gather for Fall Assembly in Camarillo
"Women in Spiritual Leadership: Sharing Our Stories – Sharing Our Spirit" will be the theme of the 2019 Daughters of the King Fall Assembly on Saturday, Oct. 19. The St. Columba’s DOK chapter in Camarillo will host the meeting in conjunction with the chapters at All Saints, Oxnard, and Saint Paul’s, Ventura. The Assembly will begin with registration and fellowship (with continental breakfast) at 8 a.m. and will include a brief business meeting and announcement of this year’s recipient of the Bishop Gooden Memorial Scholarship Award. The program will follow, and will feature a panel discussion with the Rev. Laurel Coote, interim priest at St. Mary's Church (Mariposa), Los Angeles and a certified spiritual director; Suzanne Edwards-Acton, vice president of the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and chair of the Program Group on Black Ministry for the Diocese of Los Angeles; and the Rev. St. Athanasius’ Church in Los Angeles will host "An Evening of Jazz," a fundraiser and jazz concert performed by the Russell Ferrante Trio on Sunday, Sept. 29, 5 p.m. Ferrante, keyboardist for The Yellowjackets, is accompanied by Michael Valerio on bass and Steve Schaefer on drums. Sister Helen Prejean to speak, sign books at Pasadena event
Vroman’s Bookstore will present Sister Helen Prejean in conversation with the Rev. Mike Kinman, talking about and signing her new memoir, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey, on Saturday, Sept. 7, 5 p.m., at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Prejean's work as an activist nun, campaigning to educate Americans about the inhumanity of the death penalty, is known to millions worldwide. Less widely known is the evolution of her spiritual journey from praying for God to solve the world's problems to engaging full-tilt in working to transform societal injustices. Prejean writes about the relationships with friends, fellow nuns, and mentors who have shaped her over the years. In this honest and fiercely open account, she writes about her close friendship with a priest, intent on marrying her that challenged her vocation in the "new territory of the heart." The final page of River of Fire ends with the opening page of Dead Man Walking, when she was first invited to correspond with a man on Louisiana's death row. Event will honor Joe Costa, executive officer of Hillsides
The third annual Bishop's Dinner will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the nave of St. John's Cathedral, Los Angeles. Keynote speaker will be the Rev. Kelly Brown Douglas, Ph.D., dean of Episcopal Divinity School at Union Theological Seminary, and canon theologian at Washington National Cathedral. A distinguished guest at the 100th anniversary of St. Mary's Church in Palms, Los Angeles, will be the Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams, 104th archbishop of Canterbury, who retired from that post in 2012. Barnabas Muvunyi, son of Bishop Louis Mvunyi and Winnie Agaba Muvunyi of the Anglican Diocese of Kigali, Rwanda, will be attending high school at Orange County Christian School in Anaheim (near the borders of Buena Park, Cypress and Cerritos), and is in need of housing. "Traveling the Way of Love, Episode 4: Turn," the latest installment of a new video series from The Episcopal Church Office of Communication, premiered July 23 on The Episcopal Church website and on The Episcopal Church Facebook page. Hosted by Chris Sikkema, the Office of Communication’s manager for special projects, Traveling the Way of Love shares stories of the ways people across The Episcopal Church practice the Way of Love with each episode highlighting one of the seven Way of Love practices: turn, learn, pray, worship, bless, go, and rest. Episcopal and Lutheran recovery ministries to offer 'Addiction & Faith Conference' in Minnesota
It's not too late to register for the second annual Addiction & Faith Conference, hosted by the Fellowship of Recovering Lutheran Clergy (FRLC) and Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church (RMEC), September 20 - 22 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota. Episcopal Church grants program will support local and regional evangelism efforts
Episcopal institutions can now apply for the next round of the Episcopal Evangelism Grants Program, designed to fund local and regional evangelism efforts in the Episcopal Church. The application deadline is October 1. The grant program, which began in 2017 as a result of the 2015 General Convention’s increased investment in evangelism galvanized by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, awards up to $2,000 for an individual congregation and up to $8,000 for multi-church, diocesan and regional collaborations.
