Churches are 'mothers' nurturing new birth, Archbishop Rowan Williams tells congregation at St. Mary in Palms centennial celebration

By Pat McCaughan

The Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams, the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, invoked the image of congregations as “mothering churches, places where new birth happens” while preaching September 22 to an overflow gathering at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Parish of St. Mary in Palms.

Recalling the Virgin Mary, the church’s patron saint and “the mother of the moment,” Williams said that churches, regardless of size, offer “a series of new births. Seeing how people have been awakened, enlarged and enlightened.

“It all happens here,” he told the enthusiastic gathering. “Finding that it is, as you might say, larger on the inside than the outside, that there is always more to discover of the mystery of love and call to renewal and service."

The Solemn Pontifical Mass for the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Church was the third in a series of weekend centennial celebrations of the parish, known for its Anglo-Catholic style of worship. Read more here.

During a four-day visit to the Diocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Williams also led a program and discussion at the Cathedral Center for diocesan clergy, and visited St. Margaret's School in San Juan Capistrano, where he answered questions in a middle-school bible class, toured the campus and preached at a chapel service. More about his visit will be reported in The Episcopal News.
All invited to Oct. 22 celebration to launch St. Paul’s Commons, mark milestones of Echo Park ministry

All in the diocesan community are invited to attend an Oct. 22 celebration set to launch the newly configured St. Paul’s Commons and to mark milestones of Episcopal Church ministry in Echo Park.

A festive 10:30 a.m. Eucharist followed by open house and a rooftop luncheon will commemorate a century of Episcopal Church ministry at 840 Echo Park Avenue, the 25th anniversary of the consecration of present buildings as a center of service and hospitality, and the blessing of the center’s next chapter as St. Paul’s Commons.

Bishops John Harvey Taylor and Diane Jardine Bruce invite all clergy and laity in the diocese to share in the celebration and to tour the Retreat and Conference Center, Diocesan Center, and Ministry Center within the Commons complex.

The reconfiguration also seeks to raise the neighborhood and regional profile of St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, located at the heart of St. Paul’s Commons. established in 1864, the parish is the oldest continuing Protestant congregation in Southern California.

The celebration will be a time of thanksgiving for 25 years of ministry of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, which was consecrated and opened on October 22, 1994 as home to the diocesan offices and parish and community ministries.

Those planning to attend are asked reply by Oct.7 via email to [email protected]. While the celebration is open to all and free of charge to attendees, free-will contributions are welcome to assist the ministries of St. Paul’s Commons.

Phone inquiries may be directed to the diocesan communications office at 213.482.2040, ext. 240.

Special focus was given in the afternoon to the Filipino-American experience through the eyes of second-generation youth and young adults. Read more here. Brass Rubbing Center to open Oct. 15 at St. Luke's, Long Beach
What better way to salute that new branch of the royal family, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, than to take oneself to the castle -- no farther than Long Beach -- and indulge in the fun of pairing pageantry with current events when the Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center opens Oct. 15 and runs through Nov. 9 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Visitors can raise up images of kings, queens, knights and dragons that are commemorated in the 100 or so reproduced burial markers reflecting England's most fascinating historic treasures. Tracing the metal etchings onto paper using sticks of gold, silver or copper wax results in a work of art that can be matted and framed to hang on the wall. The collection includes iconic lions, feudal folk, Celtic symbols and up-to-the-moment tapestry designs. Castle Cassidy, created each fall inside St. Luke's Church, offers Victorian teas against a backdrop that includes a suit of armor and chain mail vest. Cost is $8 for materials. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday; groups may be booked at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Walk-up visitors are welcome from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, email to [email protected]. St. Luke's is located at 525 E. Seventh Street, Long Beach.
