Matthew Andresen is a senior at Lewis and Clark High School. He has studied piano, organ, accordion, and trombone(!) with Edward Hurd since 2018. He has mastered literature from Bach, Debussy, Gershwin, Satie, and many others. Also, Andresen possesses a remarkable musical ear; anything he hears―from video game to movie soundtracks―he effortlessly transfers to keyboard.
Three years ago, Andresen became fascinated by the organ. He launched into learning Michael McCabe’s Two Trumpet Tunes (see videos: Trumpet Tune in C and Trumpet Tune in A) and instantly demonstrated a natural affinity for the instrument. Since then, he has been featured organist for Lewis and Clark’s production of Wilder’s Our Town and has presented a postlude at Central Lutheran Church.
Andresen recently began study of Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582). His teacher dutifully printed 21 pages, trimmed margins, and taped all the sheets together to minimize page turns. This resulted in a score 14.5 feet wide! Andresen has decided that he will no longer describe his repertoire in terms of total measures or performance time, but in linear feet. (Pictured left with 7.5 feet of passacaglia.)
Last week, when asked if he or any of his friends would be interested in participating in Organ Academy 2024, Andresen answered, “I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t want to be a part of the Organ Academy. It’s such a cool instrument!”
We congratulate Matthew Andresen on his accomplishments and wish him the very best for a bright musical future!
