Happy Summer, friends of DBA! We hope that you're enjoying warm weather, long days, and time with friends and family. We've been hard at work and we're excited to share some of our most inspiring projects with you.
Over the last several years, working remotely has become the norm. The pandemic has just solidified our need to stay put, connect with our family and friends and still remain as productive as possible. The DBA office (shown above) began as a home office to reduce commuting time, but also helped connect with the outside world, all while getting work done. But as the pandemic took hold, it became an essential part of doing business.
Over the last 18 months, the building has become a multi-purpose creative space where we work hard, meet with clients, and collaborate. The building is filled with natural light and ventilation, conferencing facilities, and room for 5. As we grow and look for a larger space, we are thankful for our ability to take advantage of the little things that got us through a difficult but prosperous year and a half.

As we settled into our interim studio space, we have been lucky to work with several other creative professionals to develop their home office studios. Working with an established New York Times writer located in Beacon, New York, we transformed his existing 1920's detached garage into a thoughtful and inspiring writing workshop for him to get away and concentrate. Working with the local building department and teaming with a very talented carpenter, Hudson Valley Craftsman, we designed and built a 400 square foot library for the accomplished writer. Fully heated and cooled, the custom-built plywood interior includes a bespoke sliding ladder, windows and doors, lighting, and threaded rod structural bracing.

The Sauna
Putnam Valley, NY
|
Putnam Valley, NY is located 45 miles north of New York City, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. A particularly remote and bucolic location in Putnam Valley is Indian Lake, home to a number of our exclusive clients. We're currently working on several custom homes and outbuildings in this hard-to-access location. An artist's studio, guest house, and glass pavilion are just a few of the projects that are nestled into this dramatic landscape.

This original Indian Lake pump house, circa 1920, has been reimagined as a Finnish sauna. Situated within feet of the lake, the client can experience the cool spring-fed lake water together with the steaming-hot sauna. The cedar-clad sauna interior will feature a wifi-operated heating system and will allow room for 6. The stone-clad building will have a west-facing window which will focus all views to the lake, allowing for unobstructed views of the water and trees. Stylish-yet-subtle lighting will accent the room and create a soothing, calm space for relaxation, meditation, and reflection.

Just across the lake, we're working on a unique sloped-roof enclosure for an existing lakeside stone fireplace. With the slab and fireplace already in place, we're designing a glass and timber enclosure for the owner to reflect and engage with the natural environment. The delicate structure closely resembles a Japanese tea house that will remain off the grid and utilize the natural resources around it, such as rainwater for washing up and a PV array to power an occasional light fixture in the evening hours.

The Cottage
Pine Plains, NY
|
Working with a couple out of New York City who are looking to spend more time with their children in Dutchess County, DBA is designing a single story, two bedroom cottage that responds to the local vernacular but also engages the natural landscape around it. The building is organized around a central “great room” that houses the kitchen and living areas and is capped by a soaring cathedral ceiling. The barn-like structure is oriented to the south, with support spaces connected to the east and the west. A sleeping porch and master bedroom take advantage of the southern sun in the winter but are protected by brise-soleil in the summer. Finally, the great room has been designed with a fully retractable glass wall, allowing the room to be completely open to the exterior patio, removing the traditional barrier between interior and exterior space.

|
As we develop the exterior cladding finishes, we consider muted and austere materials that will connect with the natural environment but not stand out to neighbors and passers-by. Stay tuned as this exciting structure moves into construction in the fall.
