As campuses across Ohio welcome students back, I’m excited about the year ahead and the opportunities we have to work together to strengthen student learning, civic responsibility, and community impact.
Since 1992, Triple C has been a trusted leader in place-based civic and community engagement in higher education. More than three decades later, our commitment to supporting Ohio’s campuses remains at the heart of our work.
This year, we’re continuing to advance our four strategic focus areas:
- Civic Engagement
- Community Engagement
- Community-Engaged Teaching & Research
- Student Basic Needs
We’re launching a Student Basic Needs Task Force, supporting campuses and students as they exercise their civic responsibilities ahead of November’s midterm elections, and connecting campuses with funding opportunities and resources to support their work.
We’re also continuing to strengthen our regional and national network, creating connections that bring new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities to Ohio.
On a personal note, my husband and I dropped our oldest daughter off at college earlier this week. Knowing the commitment colleges and universities hold to engaging and educating our next generation makes this work even more meaningful.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Triple C Member Campuses are participating in 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance through projects that bring students, campus communities, and local partners together in service.
Through The Alliance for Campus Community Engagement’s (“The Alliance”) national partnership with 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps, participating campuses, Denison University, University of Akron, and Marrietta College received grant funding to support meaningful service projects that honor the legacy of 9/11 and strengthen campus-community connections.

Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit is back and registration is open!
Join Triple C on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Bowling Green State University for a statewide day of student leadership, civic engagement, and community impact.
This year’s theme, America at 250: Preparing the Next Generation of Civic Leaders, will bring students and campus leaders together to explore civic participation, engage in meaningful dialogue, connect with peers from across Ohio, and consider their role in shaping Ohio’s future.
Registration is now open! Triple C members can bring 4–10 students, based on institution size, plus 1 administrator, while non-members can bring up to 3 students plus 1 administrator.

Triple C welcomes two new Communities Thriving AmeriCorps VISTA members serving at Marietta College.
Cael McCutcheon is connecting campus resources with local nonprofits and community partners to expand engagement and volunteer opportunities while Shelby Metzger is strengthening communication and community connections through the Center for Appalachian Innovation.

Cael McCutcheon recently graduated from Marietta College with a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and will begin his MBA at Youngstown State University this fall.
During his undergraduate experience, Cael was a student-athlete, resident assistant, and onboarding leader, developing leadership and relationship-building skills that he brings to his AmeriCorps service with Triple C.
Originally from Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Cael enjoys motorcycle racing, hiking, biking, and exploring new business ideas.
He is excited to serve his community and make a lasting impact through his AmeriCorps term as a Community Engagement VISTA.

Shelby Metzger is from Beavercreek, Ohio, and recently graduated from Marietta College.
She has returned to campus this year to serve as the Appalachian Community Engagement VISTA with the Center for Appalachian Innovation, where she is working to strengthen communication systems and support the Center’s community engagement efforts. Shelby enjoys antiquing and spending time with friends and family.
She is excited to continue her connection with Marietta College while learning more about Appalachian Ohio and making an impact through her VISTA service.

Triple C Engages with Great Lakes Student Basic Needs Network | |
Earlier this summer, Triple C Executive Director Stephanie Dodd and Communities Thriving VISTA Leader Noah Chartier joined members of the College Student Basic Needs – Great Lakes (CSBN-GL) Community of Practice in Columbus to network and learn how states across the region are addressing students’ basic needs.
As Triple C launches its own Student Basic Needs Task Force, the convening provided an opportunity to learn from peers who have led similar efforts across the Great Lakes.
The convening was hosted by Columbus State Community College, and Triple C thanks CSCC for its hospitality. CSCC is a leader in addressing student basic needs, and Triple C is proud to be a long-time partner in this work.
We look forward to sharing more and engaging our campus partners to help ensure students’ basic needs are met, supporting increased retention, attainment, and workforce readiness.

Join LEAD California, a member of The Alliance, on Wednesday, September 9, from 12–1 p.m. PT for a conversation with Dr. Taffany Lim and Allen Burnett about The Ripple Effects of College Prison Programs: Hope, Humanity, and Transformation.
The discussion will explore the experiences of formerly incarcerated students who earned college degrees through California’s first in-person bachelor’s degree completion program inside a prison, as well as how service-learning courses and nonprofit organizations can support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated scholars.

Registration is now open for the Commonwealth Civic and Community Engagement Forum, taking place September 14–16, 2026, at the Gheens Foundation Lodge in Louisville, Kentucky.
Hosted by EngageKY, this retreat-style "un-conference" brings together higher education faculty and staff for three days of reflection, collaboration, and learning centered on strengthening civic and community engagement.

Triple C is pleased to share an opportunity from our partners at the Community-Engaged Alliance (CEA).
Registration is now open for the 2026 Idea to Action (I2A) Incubator, a hands-on professional development experience designed to help teams develop, refine, and strengthen community-engaged initiatives.
As part of our partnership, members of The Alliance (ACCE)—including Triple C members—are eligible for discounted registration rates to participate in Day One on October 2, 2026, either virtually or in person at Butler University.
The program features five interactive workshops focused on moving community-engaged ideas into action.

Registration is now open for the 2026 Transform Mid-Atlantic (TMA) Service-Learning & Civic Engagement (SLCE) Conference, Co-Creating Change: Collaborative Community Partnerships, taking place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at American University in Washington, D.C.
This day-long conference brings together students, faculty, staff, and community partners to explore innovative approaches to service-learning, civic engagement, and community-engaged scholarship.
Through sessions focused on authentic campus-community partnerships, attendees will gain new ideas, strengthen collaborations, and connect with colleagues committed to advancing the public purpose of higher education.

Governors Launch “Service United” to Expand National Service

The National Governors Association, led by Governor Wes Moore, has launched Service United, a bipartisan initiative focused on expanding service opportunities across the country. The initiative recognizes national service as a powerful way to address community needs while helping young people build workforce skills and civic leadership experience.
For higher education, Service United highlights opportunities to connect service, student development, workforce preparation, and community impact.

Transform Mid-Atlantic (TMA) is seeking a Director of the AmeriCorps VISTA Program to lead its long-standing initiative supporting anti-poverty efforts through campus-community partnerships across the Mid-Atlantic region.
The full-time position oversees a network of approximately 30 AmeriCorps VISTA members serving at colleges, universities, and community organizations, while helping strengthen partnerships, expand program impact, and advance TMA's mission of social justice, civic engagement, and community development.
The position is remote, with the TMA office hosted at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and periodic travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

New State Voter Registration Drive Resources (Ohio)
Planning a voter registration drive on your campus? Two newly updated resources from National Voter Registration Day and Nonprofit VOTE, developed in partnership with the Fair Elections Center, provide state-specific guidance to help campuses understand requirements, avoid common pitfalls, and register voters with confidence.
Ohio-specific guides are available from both organizations. As election rules can change, campuses are encouraged to use these resources alongside guidance from their local elections office.

Training: NVEW Safety Guidance & Messaging
Tuesday, August 25 | 2:00–3:00 p.m.
National Voter Education Week partners are invited to join a virtual training on Tuesday, August 25, from 2–3 p.m. ET focused on voter safety, rights, and effective election messaging.
Speakers from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will provide an overview of voter rights at the polls and the Election Protection Hotline (866-OUR-VOTE), while Over Zero will share guidance for communicating about election threats and risks.

Call for Proposals: 2027 Civic Learning Week National Forum
March 11-12, 2027
iCivics and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation are seeking presenters for the 2027 Civic Learning Week National Forum, taking place March 11–12, 2027, in Charlotte, NC.
With the theme Civic Education in the Digital Age, the Forum will explore topics including digital tools and AI in civic learning, how young people access information, trust in civic institutions, and preparing educators for evolving information ecosystems.
Proposals are due September 18, 2026, with opportunities for breakout and poster sessions.
