The North Bay Science Discovery Day, which is in its 9th year, will be held on Saturday, October 26, at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. It is an all-day free event geared toward 4th through 8th graders and their families. Local businesses and educational groups provide over 100 hands-on science exhibits designed to inspire and encourage our youth in science.

This year over 15,000 are expected to attend. Longtime popular exhibitors include Keysight, Medtronic, Kaiser, SRJC, Viavi, and a hundred more. Pacific Coast Air Museum will be bringing another helicopter. Medtronic has several hands-on opportunities for kids.

EXHIBITOR PORTAL IS OPEN

Exhibitors always anxiously await the opening of the online portal in order to sign up and to save the best spots for their fun activities. The online portal is now open (select ENTRY FORM). Prepare ahead of time and have a short description of your activity, a list of any physical needs that you require such as electrical outlets, and contact people. Your information will be sent directly and immediately to Lyman Black who coordinates all exhibitor needs.

The Robert Ferguson Observatory located in the Sugarloaf State Park in Sonoma County has a robust program of star gazing and even star parties. Their volunteers have been with us for nine years helping thousands of kids and parents safely look straight at the Sun through a telescope. UPCOMING SUMMER EVENTS

Sunday, August 4, is the Novato Space Fest provided by the Space Station Museum. This year is a special celebration of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing which was 50 years ago. Admission and parking are free. The event is located at the Pacheco Shopping Plaza at 464 Ignacio Blvd, Novato. You will be able to meet and talk to real astronauts. The Space Station Museum is one of our regular ongoing exhibitors. Our Discovery Day will have an exhibit at the Space Fest showing water bears that traveled to the moon.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Buzz Aldrin played “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra while he was on the moon’s surface.
  • 500-600 million (1/5th of the world’s population) watched the moonwalk on TV or followed along via live radio.
  • The Apollo 11 blasted off toward the moon at 24,000 miles per hour, cruised around 2,000 miles per hour, and took three days to get there.
  • In 1999, a Gallup Poll found that 6 percent of Americans surveyed doubted the moon landing happened, and another 5 percent were merely unsure.
