The Champlain Explorer
Welcome to the second issue of Champlain's new campus newsletter -
The Champlain Explorer - named in honor of our namesake Samuel de Champlain.
About a third of the people we sent this to last week opened the email. Not bad for an unknown product in the sea of emails we all receive daily. Our goal is to make The Champlain Explorer one of your must-read emails. If you are reading this, ask your colleagues if they saw it. Help spread the word on campus about this new information source. It comes out on Tuesday, and looks ahead to the next Tuesday.
You can help play a role in the success of this effort by sending the news you want to share with a broader campus community to news@champlain.edu. You will also be able to find an online archive of The Champlain Explorer at www.champlain.edu/marketing.html. If you have ideas for the newsletter, please send them to Stephen Mease, Public Information and News Director, smease@champlain.edu.

How to Train a Video Game Designer
 | |
Jane Lindholm and Bob Kinzel of Vermont Edition.
|
Ann DeMarle and Amanda Crispel on VPR's Vermont Edition
Thursday, 01/24/13 Noon and 7 p.m.
Last week President Obama called for more research into the "effects violent video games have on young minds." Vice President Biden told representatives from the video game industry that they needed to address how they are perceived by the public. Indeed, the public conversation about violence in our society often lays some of the blame at the feet of the video game industry.
According to the Princeton Review, Champlain College is one of the top video game design schools in the country. Professors there are teaching the next generation of video game designers, and they think a lot about how they are perceived by the public and the role of violence in video games. What will the next generation of video game designers look like? How do the designers themselves think about violence in video games? We'll talk with Amanda Crispel, and Ann DeMarle, both professors of video game design at Champlain College.

Life's Transitions - Are You Prepared?
A survey request from The Office of Advancement
Last spring the Planned Giving Advisory Council, in conjunction with the Advancement Office, hosted a seminar for faculty/staff entitled, "Life's Transitions: Are you Prepared?" It proved to be a helpful discussion surrounding a number of relevant "life changing" events. Following the seminar a survey of attendees provided feedback and encouraged future sessions. Please follow the survey link and take a few moments to consider where your interests lie. Your feedback will help us to provide an informative and pertinent seminar later on this year. The survey will be open and available through Friday, February 1.

The Champlain College Young Writers' Conference
Do you know a young writer who would benefit from a weekend of writing workshops, craft sessions, and open mic at the Champlain College Young Writers' Conference, May 24-26. Now in it's 13th year, the program is dedicated to helping high school students who wish to share their passion for story, drama, and song with their writerly brothers and sisters - and with celebrated New England authors. The Conference offers three days of readings, improv, poetry slams, literary jazz/blues fusion, and extended friendship on the hillside campus of Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.
The 2013 KEYNOTE SPEAKER, POET AND ESSAYIST, WESLEY MCNAIR, is the Poet Laureate of Maine and the author of 19 books, including poetry, nonfiction, and edited anthologies. Often featured on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac, McNair has received numerous honors including two Rockefeller Fellowships, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a Guggenheim, the Theodore Roethke Prize and The Jane Kenyon Award for Outstanding Book of Poetry. The postmark DEADLINE OF FEBRUARY 15 is fast approaching. Download an application (or cover letter & brochure) from www.champlain.edu/write.

SABBATICAL SERIES: This spring semester, seven faculty members who were on sabbatical for some or all of the 2011-12 academic year will give on-campus presentations in which they will discuss and answer questions about what they did and accomplished during their sabbatical leave. All members of the faculty and staff are invited to attend each of these presentations. First up is Gary Scudder. He will present TODAY, Jan. 29, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in Wick 100. He will, in his words, "talk about the year he spent teaching and serving as Assistant Dean of Curriculum at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates." He'll discuss "the challenges of curricular redesign in the Middle East in the shadow of the Arab Spring, teaching Emirati female students, life in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and the logic of ignoring both the State Department and his friends when he visited Yemen."
JOHN PELLETIER, Director of the Center of Financial Literacy (CFL) at Champlain College was recently interviewed by a USA TODAY Collegiate Correspondent for a piece called, "Students with Credit Cards on a Slippery Slope." Read the article at: |

You as an individual can help by deciding to "Go Red." On Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 1, come to work dressed in red. Also, help raise funds by donating $5 or more and receive your "red dress" pin or sticker! Donations can be made out to The American Heart Association and can be sent in to Human Resources Box 14 by January 29. A Lakeside Campus Competition is brewing to see which department will wear the most crimson.
