The Champlain Explorer

Welcome to Champlain's online campus newsletter - The Champlain Explorer -  your weekly guide to what's new and happening on campus.

Every week, I think that we should try to keep The Explorer shorter so it is a quicker read, but every week so far, the number of great events, stories to share, and accomplishments to celebrate just keep multiplying. Perhaps it is that time of year, as the semester heads toward its finale and the rush to get it all done starts to fill the calendar. So, even though you are busier than ever, I hope you will take a few moments and revel in the spirit of doing great things here at Champlain.

Don't forget to check out the new look of our website at www.champlain.edu

You can help play a role in the success of this effort by sending the news you want to share with a broader campus community to news@champlain.edu two weeks in advance. You can find an online archive of The Champlain Explorer ON OUR PINTEREST. If you have ideas for the newsletter, please send them to Stephen Mease, Public Information and News Director, smease@champlain.edu

Champlain in the News

New Champlain College Website is Launched

You Asked For It and We Listened!

It was a lot of work, but thanks to you, we've made it! Our new website launched today!

Our new site has been a long time coming  - the project started in May of 2011!
At the outset, the campus community collaborated to create the following project goals:

  • Capture our Passion. Build an online presence that conveys Champlain College's unique spirit and energy.
  • Capture our Distinctiveness. Portray Champlain College's innovative and career-focused approach to education.
  • Think Like Users. Organize information with the end-user in mind.
  • Not a Me-Too Site. Breakaway from the pack and create a college website like no other.

We feel confident we've achieved these goals, and will keep them our focus as we evolve and improve the site. This project was about much more than just building a new website. It was about leveraging the power of the digital communication space to expand our reach and polish our presence. It was about telling the Champlain story in a more amplified and compelling way. It was about working as a team by bringing together students, faculty, and staff to realize a common goal.

Some of the changes that we are most excited about are:

  • Sticky Tools. In the new site academic information, college activities, news, and social updates are much easier to access. We're especially excited about the ever-present left-hand navigation to our "FIND A PROGRAM" feature, and icons offering quick links to the event calendar, campus news and our new social hub.
  • The Promise of Career Success. We've earned the right to be proud of the career relevant education Champlain provides students. Our new site makes this career relevant promise loud and clear by elevating Career Success to primary navigation status and by telling our graduate's career success stories.
  • Empowering All Our Voices. The Champlain community is a vibrant community and our new website will reflect that. Not only will visitors be able to find events, news and social stories, but also the Champlain community can use the new site as a platform to tell their stories with our new Blog Network. All sorts of wonderful things are happening at Champlain College every day and it's about time the world knows about it!

We hope you find the new site engaging, usable, and a positive reflection of Champlain College.  We appreciate and welcome your thoughts or suggestions on how to make what we have even better. Finally ... THANK YOU. We know we have asked a lot of you during this project. Through it all you have kept the big picture in mind and you've been great collaborators and for that we are very thankful.

We hope you'll join us in celebrating the new website today at 12:30 in the Perry Presentation Room. We'll be toasting (non-alcoholic of course) to our new site and a bright digital future!

With thanks,The Digital Marketing Team

Champlain Among Top Game Design Schools - Princeton Review
Princeton Game Design

NEW YORK, March 12, 2013 - The Princeton Review (www.princetonreview.com) -- one of the nation's best-known education services companies --  issued its fourth annual report naming the schools with the best programs to study video game design.

The report, "Top Schools to Study Video Game Design for 2013," is based on a survey The Princeton Review conducted in 2012-13 of 150 programs at institutions in the U.S.A. and Canada offering video game design coursework and/or degrees.

On The Princeton Review's list of "Top 15" undergraduate schools to study video game design, the University of Utah is #1. The University of Southern California is #1 on the companion list of "Top 15" graduate schools. Princeton Review gave Honorable Mention designations to Champlain College and 19 additional programs-15 undergraduate and five graduate. Overall, the report salutes 50 game design programs (30 undergraduate/ 20 graduate) at 35 institutions.

The Princeton Review's 50-question survey for this project asked schools to report on a range of topics from academic offerings and faculty credentials to graduates' employment and professional achievements.

The Princeton Review's full report on this project -- accessible at www.princetonreview.com/game-design  -- includes profiles of the schools with application information and links to the school sites.

Visit by Ambassador Harry Tseng at Champlain Dublin

Ambassador Harry Tseng, the representative of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Ireland, paid a visit to Champlain Abroad Dublin's Conflict Management class this week.  Ambassador Tseng spoke of the difficulties that Taiwan faces being a country with limited diplomatic recognition on the world stage.  This limited recognition means that Taiwan is no longer a member of the United Nation or any of the other major international institutions.  Taiwan does not hold official diplomatic status in most countries in the world, yet operates many representative offices in foreign countries specializing in bilateral exchange in trade, media, and technology. Ambassador Tseng was formerly a member of the Taiwanese delegation to Washington D.C. and spoke fondly of his time in the United States.  He also spoke of significantly improved relations with the People's Republic of China that was spurred on by Taiwanese businesspeople eager to regain economic, travel and trade links to the mainland.

Many thanks to Ambassador Tseng for taking the time to speak to our students at Champlain Abroad Dublin. His visit was greatly appreciated by everyone!

Champlain Students Make Subaru and Nordica's XV Crosstrek Run Vision a Reality

Sam Parker '14 skis Nordica

Thanks to a collaborative project with Subaru and Nordica USA, Champlain College students have been able to combine their love of skiing, digital filmmaking and marketing into a unique partnership and internship opportunity.

And for avid skier Sam Parker, a junior marketing student, he earned a sponsorship from Nordica and Subaru to be part of its 2013 XV Crosstrek Run promotion tour. Add in Champlain Business and Management Professor Tom Myers, who has worked with Nordica in the past, and suddenly the doors opened to bringing in Champlain's filmmaking, international business and marketing students into the project.

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - In today's technological world everything can be done online or on a smartphone. Many of us do not think twice when we log onto our computers, but behind the scenes there is a group of people fighting to make sure our most private information stays private.

Mark Utter's 'I Am In Here' Premiere

Mark utter Film poster A new film, written by Mark Utter, who works at Sodexo's dining hall two days a week, made its debut Saturday night at the Main Street Landing Film House. It tells Utter's story about how he uses a form of alternative communication called "Supported Typing" to communicate.

See photos from the premiere

The project, eight years in the making, premiered to a full house and many of Mark's friends from Champlain College were in the audience and some even on screen, included Mike Fife from LEAD.

Everyone can identify with having a story and wanting to be heard. "I am in Here." tells the story of one man's difficulty with communication. The subsequent discussions with Mark via "Supported Typing" will promote access to alternative forms of communication so his peers can collaborate with each other and all of us.

Mark's writing project began with a theater class co-taught with Emily Anderson of VSA, and funded by Pat Robins and Lisa Schamberg. The goal of the class was a script written by Mark for the Awareness Theater Company to perform. In the class, however, Mark came to realize that his main interest was using his stories to inspire conversations about communication and that a movie would be the best vehicle.

Over the past 8 years, Mark has, letter by letter, written, revised and planned the filming of "I Am in Here." Inspired by a pledge, also from Lisa Schamberg and Pat Robins, Mark and Emily ran a Kickstarter campaign that brought awareness to this life changing project and raised $25,000. They hired Jim Heltz of Green Mountain Video in Williston and Meredith Holch of U can 2 Productions. The movie was filmed last July and the cast of 65 features people from Mark's life, local actors and even a few celebrities.

"The task at hand is to find ways to embrace our different ways of being human."Mark Utter

The film is available for showing on campus. To make arrangements, please call Emily Anderson at (802) 655-4606 or email  emily@vsavt.org.

GeoFitness Challenge!

Sign up at the HUB or Fitness Center for the new GeoFitness Challenge, a four-week program to get people active outdoors.

The program began Monday, March 18, but it's not too late for you and your team of three (max) to join. Teams can be made up of students, faculty, and staff.

Each week, trainer Erin Nightingale will post three daily exercises in the GeoFitness Challenge Facebook group and on the Fitness Center Page. There will be a given number of reps, which count as one set. Your team receives one point when ALL members complete the challenge for that day, and you get one additional point for each set, up to five sets total. You have 24 hours to complete that day's required workout series of exercises at the designated outdoor location on Champlain's campus. Every day, post a picture of yourself and your team completing the day's GeoFitness challenge (you don't have to do them at the same time as your team members).

Besides getting fit, incentives include prizes for the highest scoring teams each week. Prizes include an iPod nano, lunch at Jazzman's cafe, a Bern helmet, and more. The final drawing for overall winners will be Friday, April 12. E-mail the Wellness Center for more information, or visit the HUB to sign up.

Career Fair postcard

More than 80 employers will be arriving on campus to set up for the Spring 2013 Career Fair on Monday morning and then area college students and the general public will come to campus to attend the event throughout the afternoon.  We need to provide parking on campus to these folks. Please help us in welcoming employers, students from other colleges and the general public by participating in the

Champlain College Bittersweet
Parking Extravaganza!

The "bitter":  We will be closing the Rowell and Whiting/McDonald parking lots to faculty, staff and students for the day on Monday.  We therefore ask that permit holders from all on-campus parking zones park at Lakeside on Monday, or even better, use an alternative mode of transportation to come to school/work that day.

The "sweet": Free chocolate, water and coffee will be given to all zone 2, 3,4 or 5 permit holders who either use an alternative form of commuting on Monday or park at Lakeside!

Here's how it will work:  when you arrive at the Lakeside parking lot on Monday morning, a Champlain representative will offer you coffee, water and chocolate to make your shuttle ride a little more pleasant.  If you use an alternative mode of commuting or you arrive at Lakeside later in the day, send me an e-mail and I will send you the chocolate via interoffice mail.  Let me know if you have questions.

GIVE YOUR TEAMS A "WORK-OUT!": HIGH-IMPACT, SHORT-CYCLE TEAMING THAT ACCELERATES CHANGE, BUSTS BUREAUCRACY, AND GETS RESULTS - FAST!
March 28, 6-8 p.m. Innovation Center, 4th Floor, 128 Lakeside Avenue, Burlington, VT (Across from Lakeside)

Member Rate - $20 / Non-Member Rate - $30

The Vermont American Society for Training and Development March program focuses on what is probably one of the most successful teaming methodologies ever developed.  Credited by Fortune Magazine with facilitating "one of the most successful corporate transformations in American business history," GE Work-Out was developed at General Electric during the early 1990's, Jack Welch era.
The speaker is Ray Gagnon, principal and founder of Gagnon Associates, one of the consultants who originally helped GE implement "Work-Out" and who, subsequently, has brought Work-Out to such well-known companies as IBM, Philips, Frito-Lay, and Novartis, among others.  Over the last twenty or more years, Ray has successfully implemented "Work-Out," literally, around the world and in some unique, cross-cultural settings.

The deadline to apply to Champlain's Urban Indie Film Making summer session in Montreal has been extended to  April 1.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER PARTICIPATING?

  • Students at any U.S. institution of higher education who are interested in spending a summer in Montreal learning filmmaking. The program will be of particular interest to any English majors or students in arts programs other than film and to students in film theory programs that only offer limited production courses. Dance Party to benefit Women Helping Battered Women

Diana Matot, Director of Admissions Operations, offers this suggestion:

I don't typically do this, but I wanted to make you all aware of a great event happening on Saturday, March 23.  From 9:30 - 11 p.m. at the Memorial Auditorium, Women Helping Battered Women, a Burlington based company that helps victims of domestic abuse, is holding a dance party with the '80s cover band Hot Neon Magic.  There is a $10 donation at the door. Along with lots of singing and dancing will be a dance-off during the evening with local celebrity judges. The winner receives the Golden Sneaker Trophy.  It is going to be a great time and I know we have a population on campus who like to dance!

This event is always a blast!  The energy is high and if you love music and love to dance you should come to any portion of the event! This year I am on the planning committee and we are always looking for volunteers to help with the event or folks interested in making a donation.  Did you know it takes $833 to run their shelter for a day.  If you would like to make a donation, you can do so at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/DianaMatot/WHBWZ5.

For those of you who are zumbaholics like me (if you don't know what zumba is-you are missing out) before the Dance Party there is an even bigger dance party, the 5th Annual WHBW Zumbathon.  If you want more info, let me know at matot@champlain.edu

Champlain students helping with promotional initiatives for "Oliver!"

Oatmeal, "Golden Tickets" and a Food Drive

In a change of pace from our usual practice of throwing candy from the Mardi Gras float, cast members from Lyric's production of Oliver! tossed colorful beads, moon pies, and individual packets of Quaker Oatmeal to the crowds lining Burlington's Main Street on March 2. Oatmeal packets had labels promoting the production; three packets had special "Golden Tickets" entitling the bearer to a pair of tickets to the Opening Night of our show.

The idea to toss oatmeal packets originated with a team of students from the Public Relations Campaign Implementation class at Champlain College - Jessica Callaghan, Anya Frans, James Wicks and Jim Courtney. (Nicole Ravlin from PMG Public Relations is the adjunct faculty member teaching this class.)

The student team is also working with Champlain's Center for Service & Civic Engagement on a food drive scheduled for the first week in April. Pat Boera will provide further details about drop-off locations for donations closer to the dates. All food collected will be delivered to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

Here's some info about the show:

Lyric Theatre Company presents Oliver! The Musical on the Flynn MainStage April 11-14, 2013. Tickets ($21-$33; student/senior discount at some performances) are on sale now: Flynn Box Office, 153 Main St., Burlington; 86-FLYNN; or www.flynncenter.org. Generous support for the production is provided by Physician's Computer Company and Vermont Custom Closets.

  • Kerry Noonan nominated by Andy Burkhardt "for her work on the China class and getting students thinking about different cultures and subgroups among the large country of China"

  • Intercultural U cohort 2- Graduates: For working hard to think of how to have a campus wide impact post IU. One of their projects, Dive into diversity at Champlain which started in January, includes a presentation at orientation and a diversity resource list. In the growing complexity of identity theft schemes, villains are relying on several tactics to gain access to your protected data on the Internet. You can protect yourself by employing a simple plan to outsmart the underlining schemes that the identity thieves rely on to steal your identity.

He writes a column about new media and technology for The Guardian, and he is the author of two books about the way in which the Web has transformed the power dynamic between the public and the media. The goal of his latest book and ongoing project, Mediactive, reflects his "strong belief that we need to turn media 'consumers' into active (even activist) users instead of passive receptacles."

SPEAKEASY: March 21 and April 11 - 1 - 3 p.m. Fireside Lounge

Mud season is fast approaching, along with the post break, second half of the semester ruts. Take a break, recharge and enjoy some of the finest conversations on campus at the Speak Easy, featuring -

  • Fresh brewed Ethiopian coffee,
  • Fine comestibles, cheeses, fruits, cookies,
  • The ever popular mystery international food (has included Chinese 100 year old eggs, Norwegian goat's milk cheese, candied beef hearts, Indian cheddar in a can) - usually tasty, always exciting,
  • And of course, the open, friendly and invigorating conversations and interactions with people from all areas of campus.

Craig Pepin and Chuck Bashaw, conveners

What the heck is Speak Easy? It's the organization dedicated to getting staff, faculty and students to talk to each other - about anything at all. Not a public speaking forum! Speak Easy is more like an interesting cocktail party (but without cocktails).  Talk or listen to whatever or whomever you want.

SABBATICAL PRESENTATION: Ann DeMarle's sabbatical presentation, which was originally scheduled for Feb. 28, has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 27 from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in MIC 305/306 (the library).

In Professor DeMarle's own words, "As a professor and director of the EMC and our MFA program, life allows little time for the daily practice of art. My Sabbatical year allowed me to take up the mantle of oil painter and digital artist daily - much like we require our students to do. Dividing my time between my beloved Vermont forests, the urban energy of Rochester, NY, and the timelessness of Europe, my Sabbatical journey enabled me to rediscover the power of art creation and produce a body of work exploring what I found between the boundaries-the quiet unnoticed-those moments easily bypassed in our frantic, mediated lives."
