Hospital Evacuation during a Wildfire and Pandemic: Avista Adventist Shares their Experience
On December 30th, 2021, healthcare workers at Centura Health’s Avista Adventist Hospital were managing a pandemic and planning for a winter storm. The hospital, which includes a large neonatal intensive care unit, was full, with less than 5% capacity. Unbeknownst to the staff working during that holiday weekend, the Marshall Fire was approaching the building, and would cause some of them to lose their homes while forcing the hospital to evacuate in under two hours. ASPR TRACIE highlights the experiences, challenges, and lessons learned by five subject matter experts in this article.

The headlines speak volumes, and they all lead to the same conclusion: violence in healthcare facilities presents a significant challenge to patients, providers, support staff, and visitors. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue in many ways. The Joint Commission released new and revised workplace violence prevention standards which will apply to all accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals.
