President's Message
Ginger Catherman,  CPM®
President, IREM Maryland Chapter

Happy New Year IREM Maryland family!  I am so excited about the year ahead of us.  Our leadership is already doing amazing things!  We had a great turnout at our annual CPM Candidate's Luncheon at McCormick & Schmick's on January 9th.  Those who were there had the privilege to hear our very own Leonard Frenkil Jr. CPM®, Past 2x IREM Chapter 16 President, IREM Instructor and MPSA-Grader, discuss changes to the MPSA and provide guidance on the path to the CPM®.  Whether or not you were able to attend, one of the biggest takeaways is that earning the CPM® designation is not easy but you have so many people in the Chapter that are willing to support you.  We heard from Sharon Turner and Ninette Patrick, two of our newest CPM®'s about their respective journeys and both were a testament to the support and camaraderie of the Chapter.  When YOU succeed WE succeed!  Please take a look at the links to the RE3 Education Calendar, which will show you what courses are being offered in our Region (including 2 MPSA offerings).  Additionally, as discussed, if your company can not or will not support you financially in this endeavor, please take a look at our scholarship offerings link.  Many of our members have taken advantage of this benefit.

Upon review of the event surveys there were so many people who graciously offered to volunteer on at least one committee.  Particularly with the launch of REstart  this year we will take all the support we can get.  Lastly, our event calendar is set with a few exceptions so please add our upcoming events to your calendar and we hope to see more of you this year. I've never seen the Chapter so engaged and we are ready to do good things in 2020 and beyond!

In 2020, IREM Maryland 16 has committed $26k to a six week workforce development program called REstart ®.  REstart ® will teach, free of charge, low income individuals basic property management skills.  Students will  be linked with a one on one mentor and then placed into a six week paid $15 an hour internship program with a local property management firm.  At the completion of  the internship program, the hope is that  the  student interns will be offered
a fulltime position.

IREM Maryland 16 is partnering with a local community association who will make REstart ® referrals and provide classroom space.  An announcement about this partner will be released later this year.

REstart ® was founded in honor of the memory of Bobby Jo Lewis, the sister of REstart ® co-founder, Linda Lewis, CPM.  Linda's sister, Bobby Jo and their mother lost their lives in a tragic domestic violence situation.  As Linda moved to put her life back together, she searched for a way to honor her sister's memory and came-up with REstart ®.  The first REstart ® class was taught in San Diego, CA over 20 years ago.  Since that time over 20 IREM Chapters across the United States have started their own REstart ® programs.

Our friends from IREM VA 77 graduated their first REstart class in 2019.   At the IREM Maryland 16 holiday party this past December, Melissa Steel, President IREM VA 77, Marcia Truman IREM VA 77, REstart Graduate and  Shantelle Turner, IREM VA 77, REstart ® Graduate shared their personal REstart ® stories.

REstart ® is a volunteer based program and we are in need of committee members, mentors and property management firms who can offer paid internships.  If you can help out, please contact Beverly Willis 410-236-8026  --   willis@ahcinc.org.
