Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we move ahead in our reading of Matthew’s Gospel. Last week we read about Jesus walking on the water and the disciples’ confession of faith that Jesus is the Son of God. If we were reading Matthew’s entire Gospel, we would have read about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees about Jewish purity laws. Jesus argues that it is not what goes into us that makes us unclean; he is referring to the strict Jewish dietary rules. Instead our words and our actions—what comes out of us—make us unclean because they emerge from a heart that is unclean.

Knowing about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees helps us to understand today’s Gospel. In fact the story heightens the surprise and shock we feel as we hear Jesus’ exchange with the Canaanite woman. The woman, who is not Jewish, approaches Jesus, requesting that he heal her demon-possessed daughter. At first Jesus ignores her; he says nothing. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away, and Jesus agrees, remarking that he was sent to minister to the Jews alone.

The woman persists, paying homage to Jesus, and yet Jesus denies her request again. He even insults her, using a Jewish word of derision for Gentiles, “dog.” But the woman cleverly turns Jesus’ insult into an affirmation of faith. Only then does Jesus grant her request and heal her daughter.

Jesus’ unresponsiveness to this woman may strike us as uncharacteristic or shocking. Yet in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus’ ministry is directed primarily to the people of Israel. At only a very few points, such as the one found in today’s Gospel, do we find Jesus anticipating the later Christian ministry to the rest of the world.

Behind Matthew’s text we can hear this early Christian community’s struggle to understand how God’s selection of Israel is consistent with two events: Israel’s rejection of Jesus and the Gentiles’ acceptance of Jesus. Just as Jesus was surprised by the faith expressed by the Canaanite woman, so too the first Christians were surprised that the Gentiles would receive the salvation God offered through Christ. In today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we hear the apostle Paul considering this same concern.

The faith that the Canaanite woman expresses is an affirmation of and confidence in God’s abundant mercy. Yes, salvation comes through Israel, but it overflows for the benefit of all.

Family Night Spaghetti Dinner



The Knights of Columbus are holding a Family Night Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, August 22 at 5:30 pm.

Tickets will be sold on the patio this weekend. Tickets will also be available in the Parish office. Price is $20 per person, children 10 and under are free. Proceeds will go to support our Parish Youth Programs. Tickets are limited so purchase yours early. There will also be a blow-up slide for the kids.

Religious Education Preschool to 8th grade 

Registration Information for the 2026-2027 School Year



We are here to support parents in forming their children in the Catholic Faith and engaging them in our parish community where we worship and grow together in faith. We offer weekly classes for preschool through 8th grade and preparation for the sacraments for children in grades 1 through 8.

The online registration is open for all our classes from Preschool through 8th grade.

Confirmation Registration

Now Open

Our Confirmation program is a two-year journey! To get started for the 2026–2027 school year, teens must be entering high school (9th grade or higher).

• New Students: If you did not participate last year, please register for the Pre-Confirmation Year.
• Returning Students: If you completed the first year, please register for the Confirmation Year.



This is the first of three registration tiers our office will offer for the 2026–2027 school year. Tier 1 runs from May 20th through June 30th and offers the lowest registration fee. Please note that fees will increase after June 30th.

Families can register either online or in person. If you prefer to register in person, please contact our office to schedule a time.

Notas Pastorales

XX Domingo Ordinario

Las lecturas de este XX Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario nos revelan una hermosa verdad: la misericordia de Dios está abierta a todos. El Señor no excluye a nadie que se acerque a Él con fe, humildad y confianza. Desde el profeta Isaías hasta el Evangelio de San Mateo, la Palabra de Dios nos muestra que su amor supera toda barrera humana y alcanza a todos los pueblos.

En la primera lectura, el profeta Isaías anuncia que los extranjeros que se unen al Señor serán acogidos en su presencia. Dios declara: “Mi casa será llamada casa de oración para todos los pueblos.” Estas palabras nos recuerdan que el plan de salvación de Dios nunca estuvo destinado exclusivamente a un grupo particular, sino que fue concebido para toda la humanidad. El Señor desea que cada persona conozca su amor y participe de las bendiciones de su Reino.

En el Evangelio encontramos el conmovedor encuentro entre Jesús y la mujer cananea. Ella era extranjera y considerada ajena al pueblo elegido. Sin embargo, impulsada por el amor a su hija enferma, se acerca a Jesús suplicando ayuda. Aunque al principio la respuesta de Jesús parece poner a prueba su fe, ella no se desanima ni abandona su petición.

Con profunda humildad responde: “Señor, también los perritos comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos.” Estas palabras revelan una confianza extraordinaria. La mujer reconoce que no tiene méritos propios para exigir nada, pero cree firmemente en la bondad y misericordia de Jesús.

Ante una fe tan grande, el Señor exclama: “Mujer, ¡qué grande es tu fe!” y concede la curación de su hija. En este pasaje descubrimos que la fe auténtica persevera incluso cuando Dios parece guardar silencio. La verdadera fe continúa confiando aun cuando las respuestas no llegan de inmediato.

Muchos de nosotros hemos vivido momentos similares. Hemos orado por la salud de un ser querido, por la solución de un problema familiar o por una necesidad urgente, y hemos sentido que nuestras oraciones tardan en ser escuchadas. La mujer cananea nos enseña a no perder la esperanza. Dios siempre escucha nuestras súplicas y actúa según su sabiduría y su amor perfectos.

Este Evangelio también nos invita a examinar nuestro corazón. ¿Acogemos a los demás como Dios los acoge? ¿Reconocemos que todos son llamados a participar de la gracia divina? Como discípulos de Cristo, estamos llamados a construir comunidades abiertas, acogedoras y llenas de compasión.

La Eucaristía es el signo más claro de esta invitación universal. Personas de distintas culturas, lenguas y condiciones de vida se reúnen alrededor del mismo altar para recibir al mismo Señor. En Cristo formamos una sola familia de fe.

Que la fe perseverante de la mujer cananea nos inspire a confiar siempre en la misericordia de Dios. Y que nuestra parroquia sea verdaderamente una “casa de oración para todos los pueblos”, donde cada persona encuentre acogida, esperanza y el amor de Cristo.
