Greetings from the PTO President |
"If you've never experienced the joy of accomplishing more than you can imagine, plant a garden! ~ Robert Brault
I can tell I am over Winter and excited for Spring when losing an hour's sleep to Daylight Savings Time seems a fair trade off for longer daylight. To me, Spring is my own rebirth. I check in with the resolutions in January I still haven't come around to committing to, I revisit the list of all the house projects I will maybe organize before the kids get out of school in June, and restart my healthy eating plan for the twentieth year in a row. I am anything if not consistent in my inconsistency.
And every Spring, I also plant a garden. (I have these healthy eating goals, remember). I certainly have no green thumb, but I do have a lot of optimism and a yard that gets a decent amount of sun. So, imagine my excitement when Brookie White, who happens to also be VP of the Publishing Center, approached me about creating a school community garden.
I want to personally thank Brookie for her time and dedication to this project. She applied for a grant to try to secure funding, and when we were bypassed, she turned to our wonderful community partners. Brookie has secured outside investors to offset start up costs for the garden. A huge thank you to Brookmead Construction, LLC, Banon Gloves (www.banom.com), Pezzotti Brothers Landscaping for donating the organic soil (www.pezzottibros.com), Sila Heating and Air (www.sila.com), the Rudolf family and the Hughes family. Thank you also to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. for donating seeds to the school. (www.rareseeds.com)
But of course, this wouldn't be a PTO newsletter without me asking for volunteers, would it? We would love to have volunteers help us clean up the existing flower beds, the interior courtyard, and other areas of the school grounds. We'll need help setting up the new garden itself, maintaining the garden, and watering it.
We will be forming a gardening committee in the upcoming weeks, so if you have a green thumb, are looking to meet new people, or just want to help beautify this great little school of ours, we would love to have you be a part of it! In addition, if you have any gently used garden tools you would be willing to donate to the school, we will be collecting garden tools, starting April 1.
I look forward to working in our new school garden, and am excited at the possibilities that will be grown from it - both literally and figuratively.
Kindly,
Heather McConnell

Volunteer Help Needed!
Each year the students at VFES are individually recorded singing a song of their choice during music class. At the end of 4th grade, each student receives a CD with recordings from every year at VFES as a keepsake. We need your help to ensure that every student is recorded by the end of the school year. Volunteers will be trained to use the CD recording device and then will choose times to come to school to record students during music classes. All volunteers must have clearances on file with the district office in order to start. Please email Amanda Ivory (
[email protected]
) if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you!
