FALL 2018

Welcome Fall! Ongoing programs are gearing up again and there are several new events on the calendar, including the Annual Spaghetti Supper at Jack's Outback. Information on these programs is included in this newsletter or check the YPL website for details. Also, please remember that YPL is a privately funded library. Your donation is greatly appreciated and needed to help keep YPL a vital part of the community! Thank you for your support.
                                                                 Lee Peters, Editor, The Yardarm
A huge thank you to all who support
     YPL in so many ways!

We want everyone to know and appreciate this important
community  resource - the only library north of Route 28
open to the public, but dependent upon local financial support.

By Dinah Wolff, President

In July, volunteer patrons partnered with Library Board members to work on this year's Summer Book & Plant Sale, achieving our best profit to date. We are grateful for the enthusiastic assistance of the Wingate*Kirkland campers, who quickly moved dozens of loaded book boxes from the storage area in the cellar to the first floor. (We really missed them last year, when the camp flooded out due to unusually heavy rainfall, preventing their departure.) Thanks to all who made this annual fundraiser a success. All proceeds go directly into the YPL Operating Budget.

Thanks as well to Sally Hockenbury, who not only organizes the Plant Sale part of this event, but also tends donations made ahead of time in her garden. It's worth repeating that we have her to thank for the condition and variety of the sale's inventory.

While I'm in appreciation mode, thanks also to Duncan Oliver and John Shea, who have co-chaired the Library's Program Committee for the past year, and provided local residents with a variety of interesting events; with the background assistance of our librarians, these events are well-attended and often draw people into the building who aren't necessarily library users.

We want everyone to know and appreciate this important community resource-the only library north of Route 28-open to the public, but dependent upon local f inancial support.

Now we start all over again!
We are accepting only 2010-2018 titles now for our
Under the Spiral Staircase Book Sale Corner.

By Sue Bonnell, Secretary

The Annual Book & Plant Sale was again a wonderful success with receipts of $3,331. Thank you to all who donated books and volunteered your time and effort.

We especially appreciate the help of the Wingate*Kirkland campers and counselors and the tent loan and setup from the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department.

The Yarmouth Port Library has been one of the centers of the community for over 150 years. In order to continue, we need and very much appreciate your support.

Now w e start all over again! We are accepting only 2010-2018 titles now for our Under the Spiral Staircase Book Sale Corner. Later in September, we will be accepting donations for our next book sale.

We really appreciate your sorting through your donations to bring us clean, saleable books (think 2010-2018). We cannot accept textbooks, dictionaries, outdated travel guides, older diet and medical books, etc. Donations of 2018 titles can often be put into circulation at the library, a great boost for our accessions budget.

Story-Time & Music and Movement Return

By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian

What a summer! I will miss our summer visitors and all the weekly fun at the library.

Beginnin g on Friday, September 14th we will begin the Fall session of Story-Time. This is an opportunity for parents and their little ones to come together for stories, songs, and pre-literacy activities with time afterward for socializing and play. For now this will only be happening at 11 AM on the second Friday of the month but I am always open to adding more programs if there are people who want them. Stop in and discuss it with me!

Denya will be back with her multi-cultural, multi-generational Music and Movement program beginning on Friday, September 28th at 11 AM. She'll be here on the last Friday of the month at 11 AM. Bring the whole family and join the fun!

I'm wishing everyone safe travels and a happy, healthy new school year!

The Return of Reptiles Rock!

In July, Amy of Rain-forest Reptile Shows once again brought some
fascinating animals to amaze and inform the whole family.

Things are moving at YPL.
Let us know what you think!

By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian

Summer brings visitors, traffic, and the worst stretch of humidity Cape Cod has ever experienced, at least in my lifetime. Air conditioning at the library has been a source of relief for many patrons, and at least one staff member!

News from CLAMS: for those of you who enjoy OverDrive electronic materials, the CLAMS catalog now offers a reciprocal lending agreement with other Massachusetts Public Library Networks: CW MARS, NOBLE, OCLN, SAILS, and Minuteman. That agreement means that when you log into OverDrive, you will find a gold bar near the top of the page that will direct you the catalogs of other networks.

Because we are aware that wait times for electronic materials are long, YPL is also purchasing more materials for our users through OverDrive Advantage, which allows YPL patrons the first chance at those materials.

As I mentioned in the Summer Yardarm, we are trying to increase usage of the space where our oversize books are shelved. During the fall we will be experimenting with a new hybrid classification system for some of our non-fiction, combining the Dewey Decimal System with BISAC, the system used by book retailers.

We are planning to move all art and photography books, all architecture and home design books, and perhaps other categories as well, to the oversize area. The system is intended to allow for easy browsing without sacrificing the specificity of the Dewey system. Let us know what you think.

Book Group meets again in September, when we will discuss Pachinko by Jin Min Lee. Join this lively group on Thursday, September 20. We welcome new members.

The YPL Book Club -
Meet New Friends & Enjoy Good Conversation

September 20th

by Min Jin Lee

A story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters-strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis-survive and thrive.

October 18th

by Kristin Hannah

A portrait of human frailty and resilience.

Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.

November 15th

by Christina Baker Kline

Tells the story about the burdens and blessings of family history.

A novel of friendship, passion, and art, inspired by Andrew Wyeth's iconic painting, Christina's World. Story of how artist and muse can come together to forge a new and timeless legacy.
Meets the third Thursday of each month at 3 PM
in the Library Reading Room. Refreshments!
