Annual Book & Plant Sale a Huge Success!
|
Thanks to all in the community who support the library,
and ensure its continuing success.
By Dinah Wolff, President
Our Annual Book & Plant Sale has again this year exceeded previous years' totals! Its chair people had some angst working up to the big day, since this was our first year without the huge and hefty canvas tent previously supplied free by the Sheriff's Department, and we worried about wind or rain issues which might blow away our far smaller and lightweight substitute.
Fine weather prevailed. Former librarian Annie Cifelli proposed that this year, we supplement our usual sale with offerings of free hot dogs, popcorn, Hoodsies, and giveaways, all in celebration of the library's tenth year of successful operation without the support of the Town of Yarmouth, which attempted to close the library in 2008. Loyal and generous members of the northside community banded together then to save and support the library, and today, continue to do so through our Membership program. Though we are now independently financed, we remain open to the public, like all other Cape C
od libraries.
SO many people to thank: Dona Baratta, for her continuing generosity, this time providing hot dogs; Ted and Ruth Weissberger, for grilling them on such a hot day; the Edward Gorey House, for loaning us their popcorn machine, and Les Peat for producing countless bags of the stuff; Sally Hockenbury, who organizes plant contributions, but also nurtures donations made ahead of time in her own garden (and will even visit you to dig up what you wish to give!); Sue Bonnell, who sorts books all year, and somehow remembers all the details for the rest of us.
Thanks also to the dozens of volunteers who gave their time at the sale and before; we were lucky this year to have the presale assistance of several dozen Wingate*Kirkland campers, who enthusiastically and energetically transferred many dozens of heavy boxes from storage in the cellar to the first floor, thus sparing our much older backs.
On another front: Yarmouth Port residents Lois and Jim Manning discovered a 1908 Annual Report of the Yarmouth Library Association in an Orleans antiques shop, purchased it, and through the Weissbergers, have given it to our library archives. (I am especially impressed by the President's Statement, far more erudite and formal than today's, and found particularly interesting his description of certain changes to the circulation area floor plan, at a time when only the central portion of the building existed.) We thank the Mannings for thinking of us.
Thanks to all in the community who support the library, and ensure its continuing success.

Annual Book & Plant Sale - Most Successful Ever!
|
Thank you to all who contributed in so many ways!
Our Annual Book and Plant sale held in July was the most successful ever with total sales of $3,379. Most notable was the plant sale which raised $1,166. Congratulations to Sally Hockenbury and her volunteers.
We send our thanks to the patrons who contributed books; all the volunteers who helped with the sale; and the campers and counselors from Camp Wingate*Kirkland who have helped us for many years.
We certainly appreciate the community support since becoming an independent library ten years ago.

For the Kids:
Play Cafe and Music & Movement
|
More Fun in the Children's Room!
By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian
That was a fast summer! Actually, though, the best part is just starting - lovely weather and uncrowded beaches. Ahhhh. Hope you are taking advantage of all that this "shoulder season" has to offer.
One of the opportunities we're hoping you will take full advantage of is, of course, Yarmouth Port Library. Since we have added our new toys, things have been hopping in the Children's Room.
In fact, we are switching things up this Fall. Instead of a monthly Storyhour, we will be hosting a weekly Play Cafe on Fridays from 10:30 AM to Noon. There will be books out to enjoy together, toys to share, craft or art opportunities, and a place to hang out with your child and socialize with other kids and their grown-ups. This will all begin on September 6th so mark your calendars!
Denya will be back on the last Friday of each month at 11 AM with her popular Music and Movement sessions. They will begin on September 27th. Don't forget to mark your calendars for these sessions, too.
Both of these programs are drop-ins: No registration. No pressure. No charge.
Hope you'll join us whenever you can.

Do you know what CREW and MUSTIE Mean?
Read on....
|
Quick Quiz....Do you know how many books YPL has?
Read below for the answer!
By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian
Our library continues to work toward making your experience better every day.
One of the jobs of the adult services librarian is to order new adult books. Choosing books is the fun part: I spend lots of time checking lists, reading reviews, and listening to your suggestions. As you can imagine, however, with our limited space, we can't keep everything. The process of removing books, or weeding, is not as much fun, but a necessary task to make room for new titles.
This summer I have been weeding nonfiction. One system of weeding is called
CREW, which stands for Continuous Review, Evaluation, and Weeding. Under the CREW method, we look at some items that we will keep indefinitely, like good biographies and local history, and some that we weed more quickly, like travel books (3-5 years) or home decorating (5 years or so). I use CREW for all types of items, including nonfiction.
Another method is called
MUSTIE (don't you just love librarians?).
MUSTIE stands for:
M: Misleading or factually inaccurate
U: Ugly - worn beyond mending or rebinding
S: Superseded - by a new edition or by a much better book
T: Trivial - of no discernible literary or scientific merit
I: Irrelvevant to the needs and interests of the library's community
E: Elsewhere - the material is easily obtainable from another library
We are always interested in hearing your suggestions about the YPL collection.
And the answer is: In the mean time, enjoy all the books we have, about 25,680 at last count!

Come meet new friends and enjoy lively conversations.
Meets the third Thursday of each month at 2 PM.
Thursday, September 19th - Two Books!
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her
childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Thursday, November 15th
by Barbara Kingsolver
|
In 1940, eighteen-year old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathizers, she discovers the work to be by turns both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past forever.
Ten years later, now a radio producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, on a different battleground, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat. A bill of reckoning is due, and she finally begins to realize that there is no action without consequence.

Unsheltered is the compulsively readable story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum in Vineland, New Jersey, navigating what seems to be the end of the world as they know it.
With history as their tantalizing canvas, these characters paint a startlingly relevant portrait of life in precarious times when the foundations of the past have failed to prepare us for the future.

Did you know Edward Gorey?
|
Edward Gory Collection at YPL
Sev
eral years ago Yarmouth Port Library was given a collection of the works of E
dward Gorey by the Edward Gorey Charitable Tru
st.
These items, along with the materials we already owned and other items we subsequently purchased, were gathered together in the library in a special collection, which is unique in the CLAMS system.
Also unique is our pass to the Edward Gorey House museum, just around the corner from YPL, which allows visitors reduced admission to the museum.
Edward Gorey, author, illustrator, collaborator, playwright, and animal rights activist, lived in Yarmouth Port full-time from 1983 until his death in 2000. Come in and learn more about this unique one-time neighbor of the library.

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month -
September 15 to October 15
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year from September 15 to October 15 as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.
The term "Hispanic," as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.
According to the 2010 Census, more than 50.5 million people identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Please look for this display when you are in the library and feel free to add your suggestions of titles we can include.
