News You Can Use

The best part about Winter is the fact that the world creates a brand new outdoor environment to explore.

This is why, weather permitting, we strongly encourage children to go out in the cold and snow to play. With the proper clothing for the environment, and monitoring children’s comfort, playing and exploring outdoors can help boost so many early development skills.

However, when the weather starts getting dangerously cold, please do stay in and try to work those large and small muscles inside!

Test out some snowman yoga, playing snowball basketball, or walking a balance beam (like the gymnasts at the winter olympics)!

You don’t want to miss our Annual Conference next year! Make sure you block off March 13th and 14th on your calendar. Our partners over at Appalachian Early Childhood Network are working hard on putting together our Annual Conference! Registration is now LIVE. Kid Corner: Snowball Basketball

An easy, fun, and quick activity to help work those gross motor muscles indoors this season is Snowball Basketball!

All you need is a laundry basket and some *clean* socks. Have the children stand a specified distance away from the laundry basket and try to toss the “snowball” into the basket. And, if you want to extend this activity, you could always have them stand further away or have them try to throw the snowball into a moving laundry basket. My favorite way to extend this is to have them find and match the sock designs together before they toss them, that way you work on some pattern recognition as well!
