Winter 2024 Newsletter

Commitment Compassion Community

December 16, 2024

Dear Friends and Family,

As 2024 draws to a close, we at The Family Foundation wish to extend our sincere gratitude for your support throughout the year. Thanks to your support, we have been able to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in our community.

This year, we were proud to support impactful initiatives such as the Carrie Trauth Memorial Award and new grantees like ASDEC Dyslexia Therapy, Training, Parent Advocacy, Open Doors Sports, Alfred University, and Girls on the Run. We also supported St. Francis of Assisi Mixed Secondary School in Kabaa. These efforts have led to significant progress and success, and your contributions have been vital in making these achievements possible.

As we look ahead to 2025, we are not only focused on the continued growth of our programs but also celebrating a significant milestone—the 50th anniversary of The Family Foundation. For half a century, we have been committed to fostering resilience, promoting equity, and creating opportunities for all. The next year promises exciting new projects, partnerships, and opportunities to build on our legacy of service.

We hope you will continue to partner with us as you have so generously done in the past. With your help, the Family Foundation can continue into the coming decade to provide targeted support to programs and the people they serve who are making real progress to improve our communities, their families, and their children’s lives.

Spend a Day at the Summer of Joy Program

A Family Foundation Grantee

Recently, the Family Foundation had the privilege of visiting the “Summer of Joy” program at our grantee, ASDEC - Dyslexia Therapy, Training, and Parent Advocacy. This vibrant program serves first and second-graders, with a special focus on building English language proficiency for children and their families who have recently arrived from Central America.

Stepping into the classroom, we were immediately captivated by the energy and enthusiasm. Twenty bright young minds were engaged in a dynamic learning environment, guided by the expertise of Ellen O'Neill, the executive director, and Ms. Zoe, a dedicated special educator and reading specialist, along with other talented staff.

We witnessed firsthand how ASDEC is making a real difference in the lives of these children. The entire class was actively engaged in a lesson that incorporated elements from renowned reading programs like Orton Gillingham, Wilson, and Lindamood-Bell. In a corner of the room, one student, who had recently endured the trauma of leaving their home country, was receiving personalized support from a teacher.

The learning was multi-sensory and engaging, with children using their fingers to trace letters on sandpaper, touching their mouths to practice sounds, and utilizing magnets to reinforce concepts. The joy and enthusiasm were palpable, a testament to the dedication and talent of the ASDEC team.

It was a truly inspiring experience. Witnessing the impact of our grant firsthand solidified our belief that the Family Foundation is supporting a remarkable group of educators who are making a profound difference in the lives of these children.

A Thank You Note from

St. Francis of Assisi Mixed Secondary School in Kenya

A Family Foundation Grantee

St. Franci of Assisi School is working to finish constructing an Administration Block that will increase their ability to serve their students. Father Simon Mbindyo Muema, SDS shared this note:

“On behalf of the Kabaa Village, in Machakos County, Kenya, I take this precious opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU. We do not have enough words to thank you for how you have touched and changed the lives of the youth in our Village. The school committee approved that we will plant a tree in our school compound as appreciation of the donation the Family Foundation has funded in our village school. God has visited his people of Kenya through the Family Foundation's charity funding. We remain grateful.”

Celebrating a Year of Growth at Open Door Sports

A Family Foundation Grantee

“Thank you to the Family Foundation for enabling these young adults to have a social and athletic outlet in a safe, inclusive and fun environment.”

- Nanci Sundel, Program & Development Director

Open Door Sports is a non-profit organization providing sports opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. This year, with support from the Family Foundation, they expanded their offerings to serve more people! This rapid growth went from conducting 2 programs in the Summer of 2024 for 20 young adults to 3 programs in the Fall of 2024 for 30 young adults to 4 programs in Winter of 2025 for 40 young adults! This is a 100% increase in the number of children served and programs offered. Congratulations on this exciting growth, Open Door Sports!
