From the Farmers Market @ St. Stephen's

Market Day: Saturday, December 17, 9 a.m.-noon

Soup Weather

With nights in the twenties and thirties and days in the forties, December is turning into a great month for soup. Want something ready to go? Leek and Thistle, SouperChef G, and Unkol Chuck's Brunswick Stew all bring a variety of soups and stews to the market each week. What a great option for a quick lunch or supper!

Want to make soup at home? You can buy all kinds of vegetables from Bundy Heirloom Farm, Essential RVA Microgreens, and Liberty Tree Farm. Black Boar Farm, ShireFolk Farm, and Snyder Family Farm can supply you with meat as well as bones (turkey, chicken, pork) to make an amazing broth. At the end, you might like to add some pasta from Oro, and then you'll be all set.

Want a salad to go with your soup? This week's market recipe has three different salad dressings to keep you eating greens all winter.

Do remember that the market is open on Christmas Eve (outside no matter the weather that day), and closed on New Year's Eve.

See you Saturday!

This week's vendors

Visit our Web site for an up-to-date list of vendors and their contact information for pre-orders.

Find market products in the Cafe @ St. Stephen's

You'll now find a few non-perishable products from our market vendors in the Cafe @ St. Stephen's! So far, the cafe has applesauce and jam from Agriberry, a variety of pickles from Bundy Heirloom Farm, honey from One Hive Farm, and olive oil from Richmond Olive Oil Co. If you ever miss the market on a Saturday, the cafe can help you out. It is open Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-11 a.m., Wednesday and Friday 7-11 a.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Market policies

Remember to visit the website to see a list of this week's vendors, their products, and contact information for placing pre-orders. Please also familiarize yourself with these policies before visiting the market:

  • Customers may not enter the market area before the opening bell at 9:00.

  • Please maintain 6 feet of personal space around you, especially when waiting in lines

  • No bicycles, scooters, skates, etc. are allowed within the market boundary (strollers are fine). There is plenty of space to "park" near the welcome tents.
Market parking and transportation

Sometimes parking in the lot on Saturday mornings can be tight. Here are some alternatives:

  1. Try taking the bus. All rides on GRTC buses are currently free. The #77 Grove Avenue bus stops right by St. Stephen's at Grove/Three Chopt every hour on Saturday mornings. Take a look at the route map and schedule here.
  2. Ride your bike. Saturday morning is a great time to try riding your bike in the city since there is no rush hour traffic. We have plenty of bike parking at the market.
  3. If you need additional car parking, there is plenty outside the Three Chopt entrance to the sanctuary and the Cafe @ St. Stephen's. You can always park there and take a short walk along Grove or down the alley between St. Stephen's and St. Bridget's.

Thank you to these generous farmers and vendors

Agriberry Farm, Black Boar farm, Broadfork Farm, Bundy Heirloom Farm, Curds and Whey RVA, Essential RVA Microgreens, Haashrooms, Leek and Thistle, Liberty Tree Farm, One Hive Farm, Oro, and Snyder Family Farm provided food to those who rely on our food pantry to feed their families.

Volunteers make our market happen.

Thank you to last Saturday's market volunteers, Chip Jamerson and Sam Davis, and to gleaner Ashley Silverburg.

We always need volunteers! Read about market shifts and duties, and sign up here.

Blessing of the Week

Almighty God, we thank you for making the earth fruitful, so that it might produce what is needed for life: Bless those who work in the fields; give us seasonable weather; and grant that we may all share the fruits of the earth, rejoicing in your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Recipe of the Week

Three Salad Dressings

Printer-friendly copy

These dressings do not use many ingredients from the farmers market (although Richmond Olive Oil Co. sells olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and the Café @ St. Stephen’s sells olive oil), but you can use them to dress salads made from market ingredients all winter long.
