Dear People of Ascension,

As we look towards the election next Tuesday, this prayer from Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB helps me look beyond my narrow concerns and reminds me of the larger context of our lives and politics. In these anxious times, may the peace of God enfold us, enliven our vision and strengthen our hearts.

A PRAYER FOR LEADERSHIP

By Joan Chittister OSB

Give us, O God,

leaders whose hearts are large enough

to match the breadth of our own souls

and give us souls strong enough

to follow leaders of vision and wisdom.

In seeking a leader, let us seek

more than development for ourselves—

though development we hope for—

more than security for our own land—

though security we need—

more than satisfaction for our wants—

though many things we desire.

Give us the hearts to choose

the leader who will work with other leaders

to bring safety to the whole world.

Give us leaders

who lead this nation to virtue

without seeking to impose

our kind of virtue

on the virtue of others.

Give us a government

that provides for the advancement

of this country

without taking resources from others

to achieve it.

Give us insight enough ourselves

to choose as leaders those who can tell

strength from power,

growth from greed,

leadership from dominance,

and real greatness

from the trappings of grandiosity.

We trust you, Great God,

to open our hearts to learn

from those to whom you speak

in different tongues

and to respect the life and words

of those to whom you entrusted

the good of other parts of this globe.

We beg you, Great God,

give us the vision as a people

to know where global leadership truly lies,

to pursue it diligently,

to require it to protect human rights

for everyone everywhere.

We ask these things, Great God,

with minds open to your word

and hearts that trust in your eternal care.

Amen.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Announcements

Daylight Savings Time ends THIS Sunday, November 3.

Don't forget to "Fall Back" this Saturday evening.

The Scaffolding is Down! The Tower Work is Complete! It’s wonderful to be able to see our church again! I am so grateful to everyone who made the restoration of our tower possible- our buildings and grounds committee (led by the wonderful, unflappable Steve Hubbard), wardens and vestry, Chancellor Charlie Schmidt (who steered us through various legal and contractual challenges), our hard-working staff, our partners from the Manton Foundation, the Lydia Collins Deforest Charitable Trust and the Diocese of New York, and each one of you who contributed so generously to fund the project. I remember with gratitude the late Barbara Burns, who was the moving spirit in getting us the studies to know what work was needed and begin it.

In the days to come we will organize a garden clean up day. We’ll plan events to welcome our neighbors to enjoy both our indoor and outdoor spaces. We will develop new ways to use our beautiful buildings to share God’s love and serve our community. Thanks be to God!

Alice Church Cheseborough, Kyle’s mother, died recently. Her funeral will be this Saturday, November 2, at noon at her parish, St. Philip’s Church, 204 West 134th Street, New York NY 10031. Friends are welcome to join the family at the service. Click here for more information.

Church Open on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, Ascension will be open from 9 am- 6 pm for prayer, meditation and quiet reflection. Thanks to all our open door volunteers who have offered to help us make our sacred space available to our neighbors on this important, and potentially anxious, day.

November 6- Service for Peace, Justice and Healing, 6 pm at Ascension- On the day after Election Day, our usual Wednesday evening Eucharist will be focused on our need for healing, justice and peace in our hearts, our nation and our world. Very intentionally we also want to invite our neighbors, who may feel that need and want a safe and welcoming place to be. It seems unlikely that we will have final results of the election already, and it is good to spend some time waiting and praying together. Please join us and invite a friend.

At the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - Post-Election Interfaith Service: Vigil for the Healing of the World - Wed, November 6, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

The diocese is hosting a Post-Election Vigil for the Healing of the World, a gathering open to all. In this time of uncertainty, we will come together as a community to reaffirm our shared values of justice, peace, and community. Whether you seek reflection, comfort, or solidarity, this vigil offers a space for everyone to unite and move forward toward a better future. For more information, click here.

Diocesan Convention - The Clergy and Parish Administrator will be out of the office attending the Diocesan Convention on Friday and Saturday, Friday, Nov. 8 & 9

Harvest Dinner- Thursday, November 14, 6:30 pm. Please join us in the Ascension parish hall for our annual Harvest Dinner- a time to celebrate our community, share a delicious meal and reflect on how we steward our life and ministry together. We start at 6:30 with drinks and appetizers and begin the main course around 7. This year our speaker will be the Rev. Canon Alissa Newton, Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of New York. Don’t miss what will surely be a fabulous, scrumptious, stimulating evening. If you can help with set up or clean up, please contact Rachel Sedor (rachelsedor@yahoo.com). See you there!

Memorial Service for Barbara Burns- Save the Date: The memorial service for our parishioner Barbara Burns will be held at Ascension on Saturday, November 16 at 2:30 pm. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Please join us if you can. “May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercies of God rest in peace.”

Flowers for Church - Sponsoring flowers for the Sunday service is a great way to remember loved ones now past and to celebrate joyful moments in life. If you would like to sponsor flowers, please email the parish administrator (info@ascensionnyc.org) or call the church office (212-254-8620). Please indicate the date you would like to sponsor them.
