Please Note: If weather permits, we hope to enjoy an outdoor Corpus Christi procession to the Our Lady of Victory Garden. We're seeking four volunteers from the congregation to assist by carrying a canopy above the Blessed Sacrament as we process. This task will typically be physically easier for those of average or taller height, and please keep in mind that plans may change. To volunteer, please sign up on MSP here as a "Volunteer" or contact M.B. Hwang at quidquid@gmail.com.

OLIVIER MESSIAEN
The Mystery of the Sacrament – First Essay and Final Essay
The Feast of Corpus Christi, traditionally celebrated in many Anglo-Catholic parishes on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday, affords us several opportunities to pause, reflect, venerate, and adore our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.
The great French composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) published many works for organ and also for orchestra on this theme, his being a mystically devout Roman Catholic, and whose compositional intent was always to express the spiritual truths of his faith. This Sunday, we will hear his earliest and latest works in this vein. Heard before Mass, Le Banquet céleste [1928], Messiaen’s first published organ work, is a tender meditation on Holy Communion. It reworks the slow second theme of an incomplete symphonic poem, Le Banquet eucharistique, which Messiaen began in 1926. Astonishingly, this youthful work displays many of the mature characteristics of the composer’s style: the longbreathed and extremely slow phrases are given momentum by avoiding any resolution of the dissonant, yet rich, harmonies. The rhythmic pulse remains integral to its expansive twenty-five bars, and is underlined at the entry of staccato ‘drops of water’, played in the pedal.
Following Mass and Benediction, we will hear the 16th of his 18-movement final work for organ, Livre du Saint-Sacrement (The Book of the Blessed Sacrament), composed Feb., 1984 – Apr., 1985, on a commission from the Detroit (MI) chapter of The American Guild of Organists. At this time, Messiaen had ben organist of the famed Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris for some 53 years, and poured his lifetime of devotion to our Lord’s Precious Body and Blood into this magnum opus. We will hear Prière après la communion (Prayer after Communion) – a work of crystalline, suspended, illustrative beauty.

Going Forward
Congratulations we did it! The opportunity to take the CAT ended on Monday. Thank you to the 64 people who completed and submitted the survey. So now what? Holy Cow! Consulting will tabulate the answers and generate a report. Our Diocesan consultant, Fr. Kevin Caruso, will address a joint meeting of the Search Committee and the Vestry to help us understand the findings and what they tell us about Church of the Ascension. This information is very useful to a potential candidate who can then assess if Ascension is a place where they would like to serve.
The findings will be made available to the parish at large. Small groups will be formed
and will contribute information about Ascension as a supplement to the findings of the
survey. They will also help the committee to understand the skills and characteristics
needed in the next rector.
Blessings,
The Rector Search Committee

Do you have a need for special prayer in your life? Whether your prayer needs are because you have an upcoming surgery, an ill family member, or you’re just feeling particularly lonely lately, Fr. Heard and Mtr. Murphy-Gill would like to know.
We’ve created a way for letting us know about your requests for prayers in a way we hope makes it easy for you to reach out, though you can always call the church or reach out to one of the priests personally.
