Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday, March 5th at
12:15 pm and 7:00 pm the St. George's community gathers for Ash Wednesday services. This service initiates the season of Lent in the church calendar, which is a season of penitence and fasting. The observance of a holy Lent includes self-examination and repentance by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and reading and meditating on God's holy Word (BCP p. 265).

Dear St. George's Family,
I pray that you know of God's presence in the midst of your life this month. I know that over the past few weeks I have been thankful for the reminder of God's presence in our midst here at St. George's. Through our shared ministry God has been revealed within, and more importantly outside, of our communal boundaries. Just last Sunday several parishioners gathered after the 10:30 service to participate in a Sew-In to make SafePlace Comfort Bags. Ninety-one bags were made for victims of domestic violence. What a wonderful example of God's presence, which is shared with the recipients of these bags who are in the midst of turmoil.
February has always been a month of transition for me. This is probably due to the fact that, as a priest, my internal clock is linked to the liturgical calendar. The transition from Epiphany to Lent on Ash Wednesday marks a distinct importance for our lives as Christians. Lent brings a season of self-reflection for us, as we inwardly digest our words, actions, and motives as Christ's own. Lent affords us a time to reflect upon our relationship with God through meditation, prayer, alms giving, and fasting. I pray that you will enter into a Holy Lent this month and make a committed effort to strengthen your relationship with God in Christ. May this month be a blessing to you and your family. And, as always, I hope to see you all soon at church!

Wednesday Weavings - Feb. 4th
 With the approach of Lent, the adult discussion group known as Wednesday Weavings will meet just once in February. We'll gather on February 4th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in Kleberg Hall to share a simple meal, have a short time of centering prayer, and discuss a selected reading. Please join us if you can, and bring a contribution for the salad bar meal (for example, fruit, vegetable, or crunchy topping). Wednesday Weavings will resume after Easter to give everyone a chance to attend the Grace Series on Wednesday evenings during Lent. Copies of the reading will be available in church on Sunday, February 1st, or you can email Frances Rickard atfajrickard@gmail.com for more information. |

The annual business meeting of the Diocese of Texas will take place in Galveston,
February 6th - 7th. Lay and clergy delegates from St. George's for this meeting are Frances Rickard, Spencer Gordon, Alice Nelson. The delegate alternates are Raul Carrera. Please keep the work of the Council in your prayers. For more information, visit the diocesan website.

Theology in Action - Feb. 8th
Theology in Action is a new small group ministry of St. George's that empowers young adults to  live out their faiths. The first meeting of T.i.A. will be held Sunday, February 8th after the 10:30 service in the Wright House. Lunch will be provided, we hope to see you there!

All men of St. George's are invited and encouraged to attend a gathering on
Monday, February 16th at  6:30 pm at Clayton & Lydia Kelley's house (2037 Wayward Sun Dr. 78754). There will be no other agenda but to gather, converse, and eat. If you would like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with your meal, you are welcome to bring what ever you like. Please RSVP to Kevin as soon as possible and include any dietary restrictions you may have.

The next family chapel service will be held Sunday, Feb. 22nd at 5 pm in Kleberg Hall. The first 30 minutes of the service consists of prayers, songs, Gospel reading, & sermon, with communion shared alongside a pot-luck meal. The service is followed by a brief seminar led by the St. George's Head of School, Jerri Thompson. Please bring a dish to share for the potluck meal.

Hosts Needed for Coffee Hour
February 22nd is the next "It's My Turn" Sunday. This is an opportunity for parish members to host the coffee hour that follows the 10:30 service. You can also
team up to make it a group effort!
Additional dates available to host coffee hour are April 26th and June 28th. To sign up, please let the church office administrator know, (stgeorgeaustin@gmail.com). All are encouraged to attend the Grace Series this Spring!
The Grace Series consists of four lectures centered around pertinent questions concerning life, faith, culture and society. We gather in Kleberg Hall, beginning with a potluck meal, followed by a lecture. Join us Wednesdays from 6:30- 8:00 pm on Feb. 25th, March 4th, 11th, & 25th (Please note, we will not meet the week of Spring Break -March 18th.)

Austin Quantum Artists (AQA, formerly Spirit Poetry), a St. George ministry that serves the Austin arts community, invite you to attend our Annual Tribute and Fund Raiser on Saturday, Feb. 28th at 7:00 pm at Kleberg Hall. In conjunction with Expressions, AQA has produced a book honoring 17 facts who serve Austin and their communities. Three LBJ art students will display their original art compositions and poetry. All are invited to attend!

Did you know that St. George's has a Facebook page? In conjunction with our newcomer ministry, the Facebook page is a great way to promote all the wonderful things going on at St. George's. It's a nice way to keep informed of upcoming events and a great way to share a little bit about ourselves with our friends and community around us.
