More Than Ever Before...

As we continue to battle a global pandemic, quality, accessible health care has never been more important. Providence caregivers are working day and night to test, diagnose and care for patients throughout our region, and our researchers are seeking innovative ways to prevent and treat COVID-19.

But other health care needs don't stop for a pandemic. Every day, we are still caring for children and adults battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer and heart disease. We are also on the front lines of the mental health crisis in our community, which has intensified amidst the pandemic.

Your support will help us not only fight COVID-19, but will ensure that Providence can be here for all of our community's health care needs, j ust as we have for 135 years.  Will you consider a gift today?

With gratitude,
Colleen

TELEHEALTH EXPANDS ACCESS DURING PANDEMIC

Telehealth is not new, but it's becoming increasingly important as patients and caregivers work to reduce exposure to COVID-19.

Providence Health Care Foundation recently invested $40,000 in new technology to expand telehealth, providing greater access to vital services. This new equipment will allow patients to participate in support groups and classes from home, an option that is expected to continue post-COVID. Topics covered include include brain and spinal cord injury, stroke, oncology, pediatric congenital heart disease, childbirth, infant first aid/CPR, total joint replacement, new mom's support groups and more.

HEALING THROUGH GLITTER, PAINT, IMAGINATION AND PLAY

Sick kids can't wait for the pandemic to pass. More than ever, they need the broad range of services offered by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital --many of which are only available thanks to philanthropic support. One of those programs is Arts in Healing.

Katie Rongey, is the Children's Hospital's new A rtist-in-Residence, a position funded by the foundation.

Katie shared what makes her job so rewarding and why art can be so therapeutic:

"Children who are  able to create and express themselves are more resilient and better able to cope with the immobilizing fear of a hospital admission. I am so grateful for the opportunity to provide creative outlets to children during their darkest, most difficult moments. I am deeply honored to have been hired to facilitate our pediatric patients' emotional healing and resilience through glitter, paint, imagination and play."

RE-IMAGINED POUR RAISES $102,000

Unable to gather at Arbor Crest, sponsors and supporters of The Pour, A Wine Event, raised $102,000 to help needy patients, struggling restaurants and frontline health care workers.

In the early days of the pandemic a portion of these funds were used to purchase 7,000 meals from local restaurants for weary caregivers at Providence hospitals in Spokane and Stevens counties.

Now, funds are being directed to the foundation's Patient Emergency Fund, which helps patients who have been pushed to the brink because of the economic fallout from the pandemic.

P atient Emergency Fund - What Is It Used For?

This fund helps struggling patients with basic needs that many of us take for granted, including  transportation, gas cards, medications, medical equipment, motel stays and in-home care. None of the items or services paid for are covered by insurance and all disbursements are reviewed by Providence social workers.

Here is a recent example, described by Cathy McInroe,
regional director of social work:

"One of our elderly patients had no one to assist her when she was ready to be discharged. Her daughter was flying in from out of town, but couldn't arrive until the next day. The foundation paid for an agency to transport the patient home, pick up her prescription at the pharmacy, go to the grocery store and cook her a nutritious meal, and get her settled in."

DONOR SPOTLIGHT - MIKE & SHARI BOLANDER

When Mike Bolander required surgery to treat spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal column), he was impressed with both the caliber of care he received at Sacred Heart as well as the Providence Mission. Since moving to Spokane from Moses Lake just three years ago, Mike and his wife, Shari, have made a tremendous impact on our ministries.

This generous couple has supported the Andrew Rypien Hospital-based School Program both as donors and volunteers, where they see first-hand how it helps sick kids. In addition, they  recently made a generous gift toward a Globus Spine Robot. This $1 million piece of equipment will further enhance surgical expertise at Providence Spokane Neuroscience Institute.

A former board member of Samaritan Healthcare Foundation in Moses Lake, Mike has a special understanding for how philanthropy can make an impact on the health of a community. "Providence Sacred Heart is blessed with a tremendously talented team who provides excellent care. Supporting the foundation is a great way for any of us to be a part of that team," said Mike.

Thank you, Mike and Shari, for making a difference for our patients and caregivers!

You, too, can make a gift to help fund life-changing treatment across the neuroscience continuum of care. Click here to donate.
