Tips for Open Enrollment 2022
This year, open enrollment takes place from September 19 – October 14. Open enrollment is when active or retired employees have the opportunity to make changes to their health plans, and any changes will take place starting January 1, 2023.
During Open Enrollment, you can:
- Change your CalPERS health plan
- Add eligible dependents
- Remove dependents
- Cancel your existing CalPERS health coverage
Where to start
If you go to the CalPERS webpage (www.calpers.ca.gov), you can find a link for Open Enrollment or health benefits. This is a good page to bookmark – you will most likely reference it throughout your career.
Then choose the link matching your member status – Active or Retired.
You can view Annual Health Plan Changes for details on health plans, service areas, and benefit design changes for 2023. This is typically available several months before open enrollment.
But wait, the best place to start is on your myCalPERS page. If you log onto your personal page and select the Health tab, you will find the open enrollment information you need already customized for you. Since myCalPERS knows your zip code, all available plans and their costs are here for you.
Here you can:
Access Your Health Account Details (these will be active links if signed in)
- Review your Health Summary for current: Health plan
- Monthly premium (your share & employer's share)
- Covered dependents, if any
- Access your historical Health Plan
NEW This Year - Active Members Health Enrollment Self-Service
For the first time, CalPERS will allow all Active State members to submit most health enrollment changes, along with supporting documentation, online through their myCalPERS account. This is useful for Unit 8 members assigned to incidents during Open Enrollment.
These are the links that most people will need.
Additional Forms & Publications
A few weeks before Open Enrollment begins, CalPERS will add specific information and resources here to help you choose the right health plan:
- CalPERS Open Enrollment Newsletter
- Health program highlights
- Changes to health benefits
- CalPERS Health Benefit Summary
- Side-by-side health plan comparisons
- Covered services and co-payment information
- Health Program Guide
- Eligibility and enrollment requirements
- How and when to make health plan changes
- Health plans and premiums for next year

Family Wellness Webinar
August 10, 2022 from 6-8PM
|
|
Employee Support Services and the Wellness Unit are teaming up for a family wellness webinar on August 10th from 6-8PM through Teams. All CAL FIRE employees and their families are welcome to attend. Many factors influence our well-being, and with just a few lifestyle adjustments we can all lead ourselves to a better quality of life. In this webinar, we will discuss tips and ideas that you can implement in your family’s daily routine to become more health conscious.
We believe that small changes, practiced with great consistency, can bring about lasting results. From mindfulness activities, including meditation and breathing techniques, to movement and mobility, there are a multitude of techniques that can restore balance in your daily life. We know life can be stressful at times, so we want to arm you with some effective tools that you can use to make a difference in your overall well-being.
Wanting to eat healthier can feel overwhelming if you do not know where to start, so we will cover the basics of healthier eating habits and answer any questions you may have about consuming whole foods! In addition, our staff will discuss basic nutritional techniques, including healthier swaps you can make in your office/school lunches and the benefits of adding in more plant-based food options.
If you have any additional questions, please reach out to the Wellness Unit at wellnessunit@fire.ca.gov. We can also be contacted through Instagram @calfirewellness.
