THE FIREFLY FLYER
JUNE 21
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Hola friends! As spring jumps into summer, here at Firefly our amazing team begins to adjust and support all of our people by adapting to the outdoors utilizing the playground and picnic areas. One of the opportunities we’re looking at is creating outdoor classroom settings. This year for our single largest event known as “Laugh Yourself Blue”, we’ve pulled out all the stops for the purpose of helping us raise the monies needed to provide shade over these areas, utilizing the fun and cool technology with Shades, and most importantly, to help break the ground of the first of its type, Sensory Community Garden! The dream for this beautiful space has been made possible through our initial gift, “In Memory of Earl Evans” who truly was an amazing human being, who loved making a difference in this world for all humanity! One of his soft spots was for Children here in Colorado.

If you’d like to join us either virtually or in person for this year’s Laugh Yourself Blue Gala, please get registered today! For this year’s gala on June 24, our headliner is D.L. Hugley. D.L. has become a tremendous advocate for the autism community and continues to be by sharing his personal autism journey with his son. There are multiple ways to enjoy our gala this year, either virtual, joining us at one of our Watch Party Venues (read more about these below) or live with D.L. at the Seawall Ballroom. As the Covid pandemic continues to change so are the rules around preventing the spread and vaccinations. As responsible partners, we ask anyone who wants to join us in person this year for our gala and has not been vaccinated, to consider wearing a mask for their safety and that of their family. We understand it’s a personal choice and respect everyone’s decisions.

Thank you all for everything you do to support our amazing organization and we look forward to an amazing summer!

Adios, Jesse

In-Person Health and Safety Memo

Firefly Autism is committed to the health and safety of our families, staff, and community. As the leader in autism treatment in Colorado, it is our duty to protect all individuals to our absolute highest standard. With the changing landscape in Colorado, we will continue to monitor CDC health and safety recommendations closely for all our in-person locations.

Firefly Autism encourages any unvaccinated individual for all in-person events at the Seawell Ballroom at Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Empower Field at Mile High, Denver Aquarium, and Denver Museum of Nature and Science to consider wearing a mask for your personal health and safety.

“Firefly serves a community and families directly that have a wide variety of health concerns, including some with immunodeficiencies that may make them especially vulnerable to COVID-19.  Because of this, and in an effort to host as many as guests possible at our 10th Anniversary Laugh Yourself Blue - including our staff that works directly with these individuals, we encourage unvaccinated individuals to wear a mask while enjoying our in-person program. We do recognize that vaccines are a personal choice, and respectfully hope everyone understands our focus on safety.”

FIREFLY LUMINESCENCE AWARD:
IN MEMORIAM
Sam Gary, the late, beloved Denver oil magnate and one of Denver’s most generous and influential philanthropists will be posthumously honored with a Firefly Luminescence Award ‘In Memoriam’ because of the broad reach of his charitable heart and the incredible impact he has had on so many lives.
Autism was a cause near and dear to Sam’s heart, and for more than a decade, Firefly has been one of the organizations he and his wife, Nancy, supported on a personal level and through The Piton Foundation and Gary Community Investments. Sam’s philanthropic efforts are woven throughout the Denver area, and he is often described as having ‘the biggest heart in Colorado.’ Firefly Autism is proud to honor one of Colorado giants who set forth a path for all to follow.
COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD
The Firefly Luminescence Awards are given to those whose dedication and commitment have made a significant and lasting impact on our community.
This year’s recipients of the Firefly Luminescence Community Impact Award are Larry and Mary Kay Mueller, who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to helping young people within our community and numerous organizations around the country find a pathway to success, regardless of their circumstances.
In 2009, they created the signature event, Flight to Luxury, which brings together Colorado’s most influential culture makers, leaders, and philanthropists and has raised millions of dollars to benefit and empower NextGen youth. In 2019, they expanded their efforts by creating the Pivot Foundation, which collaboratively strengthens the efforts of individual non-profits to create an even greater impact that will bring even more opportunities for success for youth throughout Colorado.
They continue to be passionate supporters of several area charities dedicated to advancing opportunities for today’s young people, including Firefly Autism. And we couldn’t be more proud to recognize them for the tireless work they continue to do to help create a better tomorrow.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Linda Childears
Linda Childears has served on the Firefly Board for just over a year. Linda retired from the Daniels Fund on April 30, 2020, after serving as President and CEO for 15 years. Under Linda’s leadership, the organization grew from an endowment of $1 billion to $1.5 billion, after distributing approximately $1 billion in grants and scholarships. Firefly Autism has been a recipient of Daniels Fund gifts, which is how she became familiar with the organization. Linda had many offers to serve on Boards and only so much time and energy to devote and chose Firefly Autism because of the important work we do as well as the severe need for this work to grow.
Linda says, “watching Firefly adapt to the pandemic was pretty impressive. It was a difficult thing for everyone and I was very impressed with the way Firefly adapted to a telehealth approach and was able to continue to support families.”
Moving forward, Linda looks forward to watching Firefly continue to grow into our new facility and then further expand. She is passionate about addressing the needs of people on the spectrum who have been taken care of by their parents and ensuring a continuity of support upon their eventual passing. She sees Firefly playing a role in this important and real need.
In addition to serving with Firefly Autism, Linda has served on over 25 state/local boards and five national boards and chaired nine of them. She has received several honors including most recently the Outstanding Women in Business Lifetime Achievement Award from the Denver Business Journal. Linda has received honorary doctorate degrees from Johnson & Wales University and the University of Denver.
When Linda is not working she enjoys spending time with her 16 adopted children and her 11 grandchildren. You might also find Linda cooking, gardening, behind a piano or traveling.
Jim Tolliver
Jim Tolliver is Vice President and National Practice Leader of Woodruff Sawyer - Private Client Group. Jim’s insurance career spans 25 years of providing highly successful individuals, family offices and mid-sized commercial businesses with specialized risk advisory services. He was introduced to Firefly while consulting on insurance needs for the organization and has been on the board for 2 years. Jim says he chose to be on the Firefly Board because “I am driven to helping people and causes that really make a difference (particularly those that in no way are related to me). In this case, the opportunity came and the timing was perfect when Jesse asked me to be a part of the movement. I did not truly know how it would work out or if it would be a fit, it just felt right. I am so happy I did, it has been a life changing experience and given me incredible perspective around the challenges people face in this world, the strength they have to overcome and prevail.”
Jim wants Firefly to be known as the best in the field of Autism support. He desires to see our reputation strengthened and brand awareness increased so people will have a connection to Firefly in the future of all the excellent work that is done here.
In addition to serving on Firefly's Board of Directors, Jim served on the Steering Committee of the Private Client Practice Group of Assurex Global from 2015-2018. He is a two-year term appointed Executive Sponsor of the Woodruff Sawyer DEI movement – Women’s Employee Resource Group. Jim graduated from University of Louisville, with a bachelor’s Degrees in Communications.
In his spare time, he is frequently found spending time with his family, at his kids’ sports programs with his wonderful wife, playing pickleball, traveling, floating rivers and casting flies to wild trout. Jim says, “I have always heard and continue to validate as being a fact that there is not an ugly trout stream anywhere on the planet.”
