SCS Wishes You A Happy Pride Month

Have you ever wondered why June is Pride month?

This month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising, also known as the Stonewall Riots. The six-day protests began around 2 a.m. on June 28, 1969, when police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street, in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. It was was common for the police to raid bars that didn't have their liquor license - which were oftentimes gay bars, because New York’s liquor authority had a tendency to reject their liquor license applications.

Transgender activist, Marsha P. Johnson (pictured above), is said to be one of the most prominent protestors during the Stonewall protests. She would go on to dedicate her life to help homeless transgender youth and fight for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Now we see Pride month as a national celebration, but it's helpful to remember it's beginnings as a protest against injustice.

This week we are putting out a call to all the artists in our network, giving you all the information you need to get your produce vouchers, and more! We hope you enjoy.

Unfortunately, due to staffing issues SCS cannot hold the annual June-July Art Show this year, but we'd like to use the Friday 5 as a venue to showcase the creative talents of our artists. We would like to run as many items as we can in the Friday Five - hopefully we get enough to make this a regular feature all summer long!

To submit your visual art work to be featured, please email a high-quality digital photo to John Federico at [email protected] and Lynn Edwards (O'Connor) at [email protected] with the following information:

  1. Your name
  2. The name of the artwork
  3. The medium (mosaic, watercolor, etc.) and size of the artwork.
  4. A description of the work and/or your statement about it
  5. The name of your instructor

You can submit more than one entry for display.

Submissions are not limited to visual arts! If you are a writer, submit a short essay or poem, in written form or maybe an audio or video recording. Enjoy the following two poems by T.W. Taha:

Gardener as Poet

By T. W. Taha

Sunlit moisture- laden drops on fig tree

Songbirds calling in various timbres

Gentle cooling breeze sways hardwood branches

Herbs nestle in; stretching in pots

Eye-catching marigolds line up at “Parade Rest”

Young tomato plants root- bound

Yearn for today’s release into greater space to flourish

Me, the poetic gardener,

Mindfully sipping my dark roast coffee

In preparation

So grateful for this heavenly spring day on Veranda Beach
