From “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote

“My, how foolish I am!” my friend cries,

suddenly alert,

like a woman remembering too late

she has biscuits in the oven.

“You know what I’ve always thought?”

she asks in a tone of discovery,

and not smiling at me but a point beyond.

“I’ve always thought a body

would have to be sick and dying

before they saw the Lord. And I imagined

that when He came it would be

like looking at the Baptist window:

pretty as colored glass

with the sun pouring through,

such a shine you don’t know it’s getting dark.

And it’s been a comfort: to think of that shine

taking away all the spooky feeling.

But I’ll wager it never happens. I’ll wager

at the very end a body realizes

the Lord has already shown Himself.

That things as they are” — her hand circles

in a gesture that gathers clouds and kites and grass

and Queenie pawing earth over her bone —

“just what they’ve always seen, was seeing Him.

As for me, I could leave the world

with today in my eyes.”

Dear People of Ascension,

Despite its title “A Christmas Memory”, this lovely section from Truman Capote’s short story touches on the wonder that is so much a part of our best Thanksgivings. It raises Advent themes too: meditation on “last things” and alertness to the Lord’s unexpected coming. I am grateful to the Salt project for drawing it to my attention and putting it in prose poem form.

May this very full time of the year also abound with blessings, insights and surprises for you.

Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
